How to Use Playwright MCP to Screenshot a Webpage on a Low-Cost VPS in India

To screenshot a webpage with Playwright MCP on a low-cost VPS in India, run the MCP server and headless Chromium on the VPS, install Chromium’s Linux dependencies, then connect an MCP client and ask it to capture the page. You need Node.js 20 or newer and an MCP client. The workflow works without a graphical desktop; the VPS is where the browser runs, while the client sends it instructions.

What runs on the VPS, and what runs on your computer?

Playwright MCP bridges an MCP-compatible AI client and browser automation. In a remote setup, Playwright MCP and Chromium run on the VPS; your client connects to that server and directs it to navigate and capture pages. If your client and server run on the same machine, the client can instead launch the server as a local process.

The official Playwright documentation describes the server as providing browser automation through the Model Context Protocol, allowing language models to interact with web pages using structured accessibility snapshots: Playwright MCP documentation.

Check the prerequisites before installing

  • A Linux VPS you can administer. The documented workflow is not tied to a particular Indian provider or VPS image.
  • Node.js 20 or newer and an MCP client, as listed by the Playwright MCP getting-started documentation.
  • Enough disk and memory for your operating system, Playwright, Chromium, and the pages you intend to capture. No universal minimum RAM, disk size, or screenshot latency is established here. Playwright notes that browser downloads can consume hundreds of megabytes; actual needs depend on the browser version and workload: Playwright browser management.
  • For a remote client, a network path to the VPS that you can restrict appropriately. The documentation explains how to start HTTP transport, but does not provide a VPS-provider-specific security recipe.

Before choosing a VPS, check India-region availability, latency to your target websites and client, monthly price and billing terms, Linux distribution support, memory and disk headroom, bandwidth or egress limits, and secure network access. No provider winner or current India VPS price is established here.

Install Playwright MCP and Chromium

Use a current Node.js installation that meets the documented version requirement, then install the Chromium browser binary and its Linux dependencies with Playwright’s CLI. For a screenshot-only service, installing only Chromium avoids downloading browser engines you do not plan to use.

  1. On the VPS, verify Node.js: node --version. Confirm the version is 20 or newer.
  2. Install Chromium and its system dependencies: npx playwright install --with-deps chromium.
  3. Start Playwright MCP in headless mode. For a local-process MCP configuration, the command and arguments are npx and @playwright/mcp@latest --headless, respectively.

Playwright browser binaries are version-specific: a Playwright version expects its corresponding browser binaries. If you update Playwright and browser startup fails, install the matching browser again. Browser download size varies; “hundreds of megabytes” is a qualitative description, not a fixed disk requirement. See Playwright browser management and Playwright guidance for CI.

Choose how the MCP client connects

Client can launch a local process

If the MCP client runs on the same host as Playwright MCP, use its MCP server configuration to launch the command directly. Add this JSON to the client’s MCP configuration, adapting the file location to that client:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "playwright": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["@playwright/mcp@latest", "--headless"]
    }
  }
}

Client configuration paths and reload steps differ, so use the MCP setup instructions for your chosen client. The configuration above uses the documented standard local-process pattern and adds --headless for a displayless server.

Client is elsewhere and the server runs on the VPS

Start Playwright MCP on the VPS with its HTTP transport:

npx @playwright/mcp@latest --headless --port 8931

Configure the MCP client to connect to http://<server-address>:8931/mcp, replacing the host with an address reachable from the client. The documented transport example uses port 8931 and the /mcp endpoint: Playwright MCP documentation.

Do not treat a listening port as secure merely because it is not a browser-facing website. Restrict access using the network controls available in your environment, such as a private network or appropriately limited firewall rules. The Playwright documentation shows --host 0.0.0.0 as a way to bind broadly; that setting can expose the listener beyond the VPS itself. Use it only if your network setup requires it and you have controlled who can reach the service. The documentation does not establish a provider-specific firewall configuration.

Ask the client to capture a page

Once the client has connected to Playwright MCP, ask it to visit the target and take a screenshot, for example: “Go to https://example.com and take a screenshot of the full page.” The screenshot tool supports a full-page capture or an element targeted on the page. It can save PNG, JPEG, or WebP, set a filename, and, by default, writes a timestamped file in the output directory. A relative filename is resolved against the workspace root. Check the output directory or specify a filename if you need to find the image reliably: Playwright MCP tool documentation.

Keep a small VPS setup conservative

  • Use headless Chromium rather than setting up a desktop environment for routine screenshot jobs.
  • Install only Chromium if that is the only engine your workload needs; selecting fewer browsers reduces download time and disk use.
  • Begin with one browser job at a time. Playwright’s CI guidance recommends one worker when stability and reproducibility matter; it is a conservative starting point, not a measured VPS capacity limit.
  • Capture only the pages and page regions you need. Full-page screenshots may require more browser work than a viewport capture, particularly on long pages.
  • Do not infer a safe concurrency level or guaranteed latency from a provider’s advertised VPS size. Measure your own pages and workload before increasing parallel captures.

Troubleshooting common failures

The MCP server does not start

Check that Node.js is installed and reports version 20 or newer, then verify the MCP client is using the expected command and arguments. If using an HTTP endpoint, confirm the process started with the port you configured and that the client is pointed at its /mcp path.

Chromium fails to launch on Linux

The browser binary or required operating-system libraries may be missing. Run npx playwright install --with-deps chromium on the VPS, then retry. If Playwright was updated, reinstall the browser binaries for that version: Playwright documents that browser binaries are version-specific at playwright.dev/docs/browsers.

The remote client cannot connect

Confirm the MCP process is running, the client uses the correct VPS address and port, and the endpoint ends in /mcp. Check whether the listener is bound only to localhost or to an address the client can reach. Then inspect your network controls; do not solve a reachability problem by exposing the port broadly without limiting access.

The capture is blank, incomplete, or missing its file

Verify the target URL is reachable from the VPS, allow the page to finish loading, and check that the tool’s output directory is the one you expect. Use a full-page option when the whole scrollable page is required; use an element target when the intended output is a specific page component. A website may also behave differently when accessed from the VPS than from your own device.
