Choose a YouTube-recommended bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test whether your shared connection can sustain it while other devices are using the internet. A speed test is only a starting point: it does not reserve upload bandwidth for OBS. If a representative test shows instability or dropped frames, lower the bitrate or output resolution and test again.
Why a shared connection changes the bitrate decision
Your OBS bitrate is the amount of data your stream sends each second. YouTube’s recommendations are quality targets for the incoming stream, not estimates of your household’s upload speed and not guarantees that your connection can deliver them reliably. On a shared connection, other people’s calls, uploads, games, or video streams can reduce the capacity available to OBS.

OBS describes 75% of total upload speed as a good starting point for setting bitrate, but that is not a shared-line guarantee. The usable capacity can change as household use changes. The reliable setting is the one that works during a test under conditions resembling your actual stream.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
The target is not automatically the right setting for your connection. For example, if your planned stream is 1080p at 60 fps in H.264, YouTube’s recommendation is 17 Mbps. If shared-use testing cannot sustain that reliably, reduce the bitrate and/or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then test again.
Set and test OBS for your actual household use
- Choose the stream format. Decide the resolution, frame rate, and codec based on your content and what your encoder supports. Look up the matching YouTube recommendation in the table.
- Measure upload under realistic conditions. Run a speed test when household use resembles what you expect during the broadcast. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate; treat the result as a measurement at that moment, not bandwidth dedicated to OBS.
- Set an initial bitrate. In OBS, open Settings > Output and configure the stream encoder’s bitrate. Use the YouTube recommendation as the quality target only if it fits within upload capacity you can reliably spare. OBS’s suggestion to start around 75% of total upload speed is a starting point, not a safe universal threshold for a shared connection.
- Check the stream format requirements. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Confirm that your OBS output settings match the applicable YouTube guidance at YouTube’s encoder settings page.
- Run a safe rehearsal. Start an unlisted or otherwise safe test with representative audio and motion. Watch OBS’s dropped-frame count and YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube specifically recommends testing with similar motion and audio before going live.
- Adjust and repeat. If the stream drops frames, the connection may be unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. Reduce the bitrate first or lower resolution/frame rate, then repeat the rehearsal while household devices are active.
- Monitor during the event. Keep an eye on OBS dropped frames and YouTube stream health while live. YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation describes stream health and configuration issue types, including bitrate and keyframe warnings.
Diagnose the kind of connection problem
Different causes need different fixes. Lowering bitrate can help when OBS is sending more data than the connection can sustain. It does not repair every network problem.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
- Shared upload capacity is insufficient: Other household traffic may be consuming available upload bandwidth. Ask household members to pause large uploads or bandwidth-heavy activity during the test, or reduce stream bitrate, resolution, or frame rate.
- Local Wi-Fi is unstable: OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends wired networking when Wi-Fi instability is suspected. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is one optional way to test a wired connection. Ethernet may improve reliability on the local link, but it does not increase your ISP upload allocation or remove congestion beyond your network.
- There may be an ingest-route or ISP issue: OBS troubleshooting suggests trying a different ingest server where applicable, enabling network optimizations and TCP pacing on Windows, and testing dynamic bitrate. If problems persist, OBS recommends contacting your ISP because congestion or route changes can be outside your control. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
When dynamic bitrate helps—and what it costs
OBS offers dynamic bitrate as a way to mitigate congestion by lowering bitrate when the connection cannot sustain the configured rate. That can reduce dropped frames, but it can also reduce video quality, and it does not fix the underlying network cause. Treat it as a fallback for fluctuating capacity, not a substitute for a stable connection and representative testing.
