OBS YouTube Loop Stream: Best Bitrate Settings for 1080p Pre-Recorded Videos

For a 1080p OBS YouTube loop, use YouTube’s live bitrate recommendation for the codec and frame rate you stream: 14 or 17 Mbps for H.264, 10 or 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 1080p YouTube Live loop in OBS, use the live-ingest bitrate for the codec and frame rate OBS sends: H.264 at 14 Mbps for 30 fps or 17 Mbps for 60 fps; AV1 or H.265/HEVC at 10 Mbps for 30 fps or 12 Mbps for 60 fps. Set CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS, then test the complete setup and monitor YouTube’s stream health. These are live-stream settings: pre-recorded footage sent through OBS is still encoded and delivered as a live stream.

Recommended 1080p live bitrates for OBS

YouTube’s live encoder recommendations vary by ingest codec and frame rate, not just resolution. Use the row matching the stream OBS actually sends to YouTube. The minimums are lower bounds in YouTube’s table, not recommended targets.

OBS output and YouTube ingest codec YouTube minimum YouTube recommended bitrate
1080p30, H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60, H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p30, AV1 or H.265/HEVC 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60, AV1 or H.265/HEVC 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

These figures are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, accessed in 2026: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Start with the recommendation for your codec and frame rate, then verify that your internet connection can sustain the total stream bitrate. If you use a different codec than expected, the applicable recommendation may differ.

Use live-stream settings, not upload-file settings

A pre-recorded video does not use YouTube’s video-upload bitrate recommendation when OBS sends it as a live broadcast. OBS encodes the video for live ingest, so use the live table above. YouTube’s separate upload-encoding guide lists 10 Mbps for standard-frame-rate 1080p video and 15 Mbps for high-frame-rate 1080p video; those figures are for uploading a video file, not live streaming it. See YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.

Set the key live output options in OBS

Bitrate and rate control

In OBS, open Settings > Output and set the live stream output to the recommended bitrate for the codec and frame rate you are using. Use CBR (constant bitrate), as YouTube recommends for live encoding. OBS Simple output mode may adjust bitrate based on upload speed and service limitations; Advanced Output gives separate stream and recording controls. For this task, change the stream output setting, not the local recording quality.

Keyframes and transport

Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four. Select RTMPS as the streaming transport when configuring the YouTube connection; YouTube recommends the secure protocol. The exact location of these controls can vary with OBS version and output mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resolution and frame rate

In Settings > Video, set the output resolution to 1920 × 1080 and choose the frame rate that matches the video and the bitrate row you selected. A 60 fps stream has a higher recommended bitrate than a 30 fps stream for both codec groups in YouTube’s table. Avoid choosing 60 fps solely because it is available if the source is 30 fps; test with the intended source and settings.

Loop one file or a playlist

One local video: Media Source

  1. In your scene, click + under Sources and add Media Source.
  2. Choose the local video file and enable Loop so it plays again after it ends.
  3. Leave Restart playback when source becomes active enabled if you want playback to start from the beginning when the source becomes active. It is on by default.
  4. Check the behavior of Show nothing when playback ends, which is on by default. With Loop enabled, the file should repeat rather than reach an ended state.
  5. Preview the scene and confirm the video and audio play as intended before going live.

Ordered playlist: VLC Video

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  2. In the scene, add a VLC Video source and add the files in the order you want them to play.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist. OBS documentation lists this option as on by default, but check the source properties.
  4. Preview the playlist, including transitions between files, and verify that its audio levels and order are correct.

OBS documents these source behaviors in Media Sources (published 2022-01-11). For general setup, see the OBS Studio Overview Guide (published 2022-01-11).

Check upload capacity and test before the broadcast

The recommended bitrate is a target, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. You need stable upload capacity for the stream’s total bitrate, including audio, with room for normal network variation. A speed-test headline does not establish what your connection will sustain continuously while broadcasting.

  • Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input
  1. Set up the exact file or playlist, audio, resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you plan to use.
  2. Run a test stream long enough to check playback and connection stability under representative motion and audio.
  3. Watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS for warnings, dropped frames, or other signs that the connection or encoding is struggling.
  4. If the stream is unstable, reduce the bitrate or frame rate and test again. Choose the highest setting that remains stable on the actual connection rather than relying on a brief speed test.

YouTube’s Streaming tips also recommends checking stream health. A bitrate alone cannot compensate for inconsistent upload bandwidth or an overloaded encoder.

Choose an encoder by testing your computer

Hardware encoding can offload work to a GPU component and may encode efficiently, but the result depends on the encoder generation and settings. OBS cautions that earlier-generation hardware encoders can deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate than software encoding with the default veryfast preset. This is a trade-off, not a reason to assume a particular graphics card is required. Compare the available encoder choices with a representative test on your system; OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide explains the distinction (published 2022-01-11).

Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube reports a weak or unstable connection: Check that the selected bitrate fits sustained upload capacity. Lower it and retest; also check for network congestion or interruptions.
  • The stream looks softer than expected: Confirm the output resolution and frame rate in OBS, then confirm you selected the matching codec row and recommended bitrate. A higher bitrate cannot fix an output resolution set below 1080p.
  • The video stops instead of repeating: For a single file, check Loop in Media Source properties. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist in VLC Video properties.
  • VLC Video is unavailable or does not load files: Install VLC with the same architecture as OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
  • OBS playback starts at an unexpected point after switching scenes: Check Restart playback when source becomes active in Media Source properties and confirm whether restarting is the behavior you want.

Protect the channel and the stream content

Looping a file technically does not grant permission to broadcast its contents. Use video, music, and other material you have the rights to stream, and check YouTube’s copyright and live-stream rules before broadcasting. A successful technical test does not establish that a stream complies with those rules.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer and home connection running continuously, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For a 24/7 YouTube loop, start a free day at StreamNeo registration.
