For a 4K 30fps YouTube Live stream in OBS, set the output to 3840×2160 at 30 fps, use CBR, and set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s current recommended video bitrate is 42 Mbps for H.264 or 30 Mbps for AV1/H.265. Those are platform targets, not guarantees: your encoder and upload connection must sustain the chosen rate. The picture settings are straightforward; making a playlist advance and loop reliably depends on how you feed it into OBS, so test that workflow before going live.
Recommended OBS settings for YouTube Live at 4K 30fps
These settings apply to a 2160p (3840×2160), 30 fps stream sent to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. Use the recommended bitrate for the codec your OBS encoder actually sends, and test your own setup before relying on it for a long broadcast.

| Setting | Value | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 3840×2160 | In OBS, set this under Settings > Video. The canvas is the workspace for arranging sources; output resolution is what OBS sends to YouTube. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | In OBS, select Common FPS Values and choose 30. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Video bitrate | 42 Mbps for H.264; 30 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC | These are YouTube’s recommended 4K/2160p at 30 fps ingest rates. The corresponding listed minimums are 11 Mbps for H.264 and 8 Mbps for AV1/H.265; a minimum is not a promise of good results. |
| Latency | Normal | YouTube uses normal latency for 4K; low latency is unavailable at 2160p. |
YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its published codec and bitrate values are platform guidance, not independent performance measurements. OBS performance also depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS notes that a compatible system does not by itself guarantee that it can stream or record successfully. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and OBS system requirements explain the relevant limits.
Configure YouTube and OBS
- Create or select the live stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, create a stream or select an existing one, then copy its stream URL and key. YouTube permits reuse of prior stream settings and keys. Treat the key like a password; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, choose YouTube as the streaming service and enter the key, or configure the appropriate server and key if setting up the service manually. Confirm that the selected server is the one associated with the stream.
- Set the video output. In OBS, open Settings > Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160 and Common FPS Values to 30. Check the canvas separately: it is the design space where you fit and position sources, not necessarily the resolution sent to the stream.
- Set the encoder output. Open Settings > Output, select the streaming output settings and an available encoder. Choose CBR, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and enter the bitrate for the codec being sent: 42 Mbps for H.264 or 30 Mbps for AV1/H.265. Use the rate only if your connection and system can sustain it. OBS labels and available encoder options can vary by version and hardware.
- Run a representative test. Test the actual playlist, including movement, audio, and transitions between items. Watch OBS for performance problems and YouTube Live Control Room for stream health. YouTube says to test before starting a live stream; OBS also recommends testing ahead of time. OBS’s streaming guide provides further setup guidance.
- Record a local backup. In OBS, enable recording alongside streaming if your system has sufficient capacity. OBS recommends MKV for recordings because an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire file; remux afterward if you need another format. YouTube automatically archives 1440p and 2160p live streams, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube’s archive guidance recommends a local archive as a backup.
Choose a bitrate and codec your setup can sustain
For 4K30, the recommended rate changes with the ingest codec. The figures below are YouTube’s current published settings, accessed in 2026—not a promise that your internet service, computer, or viewers will achieve a particular result.

| Codec sent to YouTube | YouTube-listed minimum for 4K30 | YouTube-recommended rate for 4K30 |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
Do not select a bitrate by codec name alone: confirm which encoder OBS is using and whether your hardware supports it. The meaningful trade-offs are codec support, image quality at the chosen rate, encoder workload, and available network headroom. The official guidance does not establish one codec or hardware setup as best for everyone. If your upload connection cannot reliably carry the recommended rate, lower the bitrate and consider reducing output resolution rather than pushing an unstable 4K stream. YouTube cautions that high bitrate can cause viewer buffering and advises choosing quality according to connection reliability.
Leave room for normal variation in your connection; a speed test result is not proof that a rate will remain available throughout a broadcast. Test at the time and on the network you intend to use, then check YouTube’s stream-health indicators while the test is running.

Make the playlist work as an OBS source
A YouTube playlist and an OBS playlist source are not interchangeable. YouTube’s own playlist feature does not, by itself, feed an OBS encoder. The source workflow—such as an OBS media source, VLC, or an add-on—determines how items are loaded, advanced, looped, and handled if playback is interrupted. The official guidance does not establish one universal playlist configuration or guarantee unattended playback across item boundaries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Choose the source workflow you intend to use and load the media into it; do not assume that pasting a YouTube playlist URL into a live-stream setup will make OBS play it.
- Configure item order, advance behavior, and looping in that source workflow. The exact controls depend on the source or add-on, so verify its own settings rather than relying on a generic OBS instruction.
- Start a private or unlisted test stream and observe the playlist from its first item through at least one item boundary. Confirm that video and audio continue, the next item starts as intended, and looping behaves as expected.
- Test interruptions and longer playback if the stream is meant to run unattended. A successful short test does not establish that a source or add-on will recover from every interruption or remain stable indefinitely.
Copyright, reused content, and live-stream eligibility
Only stream recordings you have the rights and permissions to broadcast. Owning a copy of a song or video does not automatically grant live-streaming rights. Copyright claims or other restrictions can affect a broadcast, and music or other third-party material may be restricted even when it is part of a playlist. Check permissions for every item, including background audio, before scheduling a stream.

Permission to stream and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. Repeatedly looping existing recordings does not itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements or reused-content policies. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies and YouTube copyright guidance; policy and enforcement can change, so confirm the current rules for your channel and content.
Troubleshoot common 4K30 playlist-streaming problems
- YouTube reports a weak or unstable connection: The selected rate may exceed reliable upload capacity, or the connection may fluctuate. Test again on the intended network; lower bitrate and, if needed, reduce output resolution. Do not treat the listed minimum as a guarantee of stable delivery.
- OBS struggles to encode or drops frames: 4K at 30 fps can demand substantial system resources. Check OBS performance indicators and other active workloads, then test a less demanding encoder setting or lower output resolution. System compatibility alone does not guarantee streaming capability.
- The stream appears at the wrong resolution or frame rate: Recheck Settings > Video, especially Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Values. The canvas resolution and output resolution serve different purposes.
- The stream starts, but the playlist does not advance or loop: Check the media source, VLC workflow, or add-on that owns playlist playback. Verify behavior in a private or unlisted test through item boundaries; YouTube’s playlist feature does not control OBS playback.
- The audio or video cuts out between items: Inspect the source workflow and media files, then test the same transition again. Do not assume a playlist plugin handles every interruption or file format identically.
- The stream key fails or the wrong stream receives the broadcast: Confirm that OBS has the key and server associated with the selected Live Control Room stream. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- No archive appears after a long broadcast: YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Record locally in OBS rather than relying only on the automatic archive.
