Start by checking which encoder OBS is using: an x264 software encoder relies on the CPU, while a compatible hardware encoder can move encoding work to a specialized GPU component. Then reduce output frame rate or resolution and simplify the loop scene only as needed. The right fix depends on your encoder, hardware, output settings, and scene; high CPU use alone does not identify the bottleneck.
Diagnose the load before changing settings
CPU demand is not determined by one setting. The OBS Project says it varies with the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity (System Requirements, August 25, 2021). A loop scene may be simple, but browser sources, filters, media, and overlays can still add work.

- In OBS, open Settings → Output and note the selected streaming encoder. If it is x264, OBS is encoding with the CPU. If a compatible hardware encoder is available, it may shift encoding work away from the CPU; the available options depend on your hardware and platform. - Check whether the problem is specifically CPU use or whether OBS is also reporting rendering or encoding overload. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide, June 12, 2021 addresses GPU rendering and encoding overload as well as performance symptoms. GPU remedies are not guaranteed CPU fixes.
- Change one setting at a time, then make a short test recording or private/unlisted stream before relying on the setup live. OBS’s Quick Start Guide, August 25, 2021 recommends testing before going live.
Choose an encoder that fits your system
If OBS is using x264
x264 is software encoding, so encoding work falls on the CPU. If your system offers a compatible hardware encoder, compare it as an alternative rather than assuming a specific option such as NVENC exists on every computer. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU encoding work, but availability and output quality depend on the hardware and platform.

If you need to stay on x264, OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide, November 30, 2023 lists the CPU Usage Preset veryfast as its baseline for advanced x264 recording. Treat that as an encoder-specific starting point, not a universal YouTube Live recommendation or a guarantee. Preset changes can affect image quality, so test the stream output after changing it.

If you select a hardware encoder
Confirm that the option is supported by your current system, then test the output for acceptable quality and stability. This shifts encoding work toward specialized GPU hardware; it does not mean GPU performance is unlimited. If OBS reports GPU rendering overload, address that separately rather than expecting an encoder switch to solve every issue.
Reduce output work if the stream cannot be sustained
Try 30 fps before changing the canvas
If the stream is configured for 60 fps and performance is not sustainable, try 30 fps. OBS recommends this reduction when needed in its encoding troubleshooting guidance. Thirty frames per second means less motion smoothness than 60 fps, which can be noticeable in fast-moving content, but it also reduces work.

Lower the output resolution if necessary
Reduce the output (scaled) resolution in Settings → Video if the current resolution cannot be sustained. The trade-off is reduced detail in the broadcast. Change the output resolution before lowering the base canvas: the base canvas determines the workspace for arranging sources, so changing it can require resizing and repositioning them. Keep the change proportional
Do not lower frame rate or resolution automatically if the stream is already stable. Make the smallest adjustment that resolves the observed problem, then check the picture and motion in a test. There is no single output setting that suits every loop, machine, or viewer expectation.

Simplify the loop scene and sources
Keep only what the loop needs, and use the following changes as targeted diagnostics:
- Remove unused sources and reduce or disable expensive filters.
- Resize browser sources to the dimensions they actually need. If the browser source only displays static content, use an image source where appropriate.
- Use media files at appropriate dimensions rather than unnecessarily large sources.
- Temporarily disable complex animated overlays to see whether they contribute to the load.
- Remember that some sources can consume resources even while hidden; hiding an item is not always equivalent to removing its cost.

When the bottleneck is GPU load, use GPU-specific fixes
If you are gaming or running other GPU-heavy work at the same time, OBS suggests capping the game’s frame rate or lowering its graphics settings to free GPU resources. On Windows, OBS also suggests trying to run OBS as administrator when facing GPU overload. These steps target GPU pressure or rendering overload; they are not direct remedies for CPU-bound x264 encoding.
Test before depending on the change
- Apply one adjustment, such as switching to a supported hardware encoder, lowering output frame rate, or simplifying a source.
- Record or stream a few minutes with the actual loop scene and intended output settings.
- Check whether CPU use and any OBS overload indication improve, and inspect the recording or stream for acceptable detail, motion, and overlays.
- If the issue remains, revert changes that hurt the picture without helping performance and test the next likely cause.
The title alone cannot establish whether your system is CPU-bound, GPU-bound, or overloaded by a particular source. Matching the remedy to the encoder and observed performance indicator is more reliable than lowering every setting at once.
