How to Loop a Video Playlist to YouTube Live from a Synology NAS

You can loop videos stored on a Synology NAS into a YouTube Live stream, but not with Surveillance Station’s documented YouTube Live Broadcast feature: that feature sends camera feeds, not playlists of video files. For files, you need a separate encoder that reads the NAS videos, plays them in a loop, and sends the output to YouTube using your stream URL and key. Depending on your NAS model and workload, that encoder can run on the NAS or on a separate computer that can access its shared folder.

Can Synology Surveillance Station stream a video file playlist?

Synology documents Surveillance Station Live Broadcast as a way to send a live camera stream to YouTube. Its setup involves entering YouTube’s RTMP path and account key, then selecting a camera and stream profile. Synology’s published specifications say this feature supports H.264. They do not document selecting local video files or looping a playlist.

So treat video playback and live broadcasting as separate jobs: a playlist-capable encoder must read your NAS files, play them continuously, encode or pass through a compatible stream, and publish it to YouTube. Surveillance Station Live Broadcast is not a third playlist option.

Choose where the playlist encoder will run

Option Strength Limitation What to check
Encoder process on the NAS, potentially in a supported container It can read files stored locally on the NAS and may run without a desktop computer left on. Compatibility and real-time encoding capacity depend on the NAS model and DSM release; a specific container setup or playlist behavior is not established here. CPU or iGPU capability, codec support, whether Container Manager is available for your model and DSM release, restart behavior, and monitoring.
Encoder on a separate computer reading a NAS shared folder It moves encoding work off the NAS and lets you use a computer-based encoder. The computer must stay powered on and maintain reliable access to the shared folder. Network throughput, reliability, encoder controls, power use, and how quickly you can recover from a failure.

Do not assume a NAS can encode a particular resolution or frame rate just because it can store and serve the files. The model, DSM version, source media, encoder settings, and upload connection all matter. If the NAS struggles to encode in real time, test an encoder on a separate computer instead.

How do I loop a video playlist to YouTube Live from a Synology NAS?

  1. Confirm that YouTube Live is enabled. Open YouTube Studio and create or select a stream in Live Control Room. YouTube says first-time live streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so allow time for activation before a planned broadcast.
  2. Choose a file-capable encoder and location. It must be able to read the videos from the NAS, play them in a sequence, repeat the sequence, and publish a continuous live feed. If it runs on another computer, make the NAS shared folder accessible to that computer. If it runs on the NAS, first confirm that your model and DSM release support the required runtime and that the hardware can sustain the intended encode.
  3. Configure the playlist separately from YouTube publishing. Add the video files in the desired order and enable repeat or looping in the encoder. File names alone do not establish compatibility: check that the encoder supports each file’s container, video codec, audio codec, resolution, and frame rate. Keep the source files available for the full broadcast.
  4. Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the encoder. Use the values shown for the selected stream in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder setup uses these details to connect the encoder to its ingest service. Keep the key private: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, repository, or forum post. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
  5. Set the transport, codecs, and output to match YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube lists RTMP or RTMPS as ingest protocols and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds; and bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate. Choose the matching row for your planned output and ensure your sustained upload capacity can support it. As one example—not a universal target—the YouTube table lists H.264 720p at 30 fps with 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps recommended.
  6. Start with a private or otherwise limited test. Send representative video and audio movement, then check YouTube’s stream health and warnings. Confirm that playback reaches the end of each file, advances to the next, and returns to the first; listen for audio sync problems; and verify that the encoder recovers after a planned restart before relying on an unattended broadcast.
  7. Publish only after the test is healthy. Check the live preview, stream health, audio, and playlist behavior in YouTube Studio. Keep the encoder and its access to the NAS running for the full broadcast, and monitor it often enough to notice a stopped process or failed connection.

Settings and operating details that matter

Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

There is no single correct resolution or bitrate for every NAS and internet connection. Use the current YouTube encoder table’s row for the resolution and frame rate your encoder can sustain, and leave enough upload headroom for a stable connection. A higher setting is not useful if the NAS cannot encode it in real time or the connection cannot continuously upload it.

Keyframes and constant bitrate

Set the encoder to constant bitrate and use a two-second keyframe interval where its controls allow it. YouTube’s current guidance says the interval should not exceed four seconds. If the encoder exposes a GOP or keyframe setting rather than an interval, check its documentation so you enter the equivalent value correctly.

Audio and video compatibility

YouTube’s listed ingest codecs include H.264, H.265, and AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. That is guidance for the YouTube encoder feed; the NAS or computer encoder must also be able to read the source files. A playlist with mixed formats may need conversion or consistent encoder output. Test every item rather than assuming that one working file proves the entire playlist is compatible.

Stream duration and archiving

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a single complete archive for a continuous stream longer than 12 hours. If preserving the whole program matters, plan separate broadcast segments or make local recordings.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules

Having a video file on your NAS does not by itself establish that you have the rights to broadcast it. Before streaming, confirm you have permission for the video, music, performances, and any other protected material in every playlist item. A live stream can receive a copyright claim or be interrupted even if the underlying file plays normally.

Also consider YouTube’s monetization rules separately from the technical ability to go live. Repeatedly looping material does not guarantee monetization eligibility; make sure the channel and content meet YouTube’s current policies for originality and reused content. Check the current YouTube rules before building a channel around a continuous playlist.

Troubleshooting a NAS-to-YouTube playlist stream

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not receive a feed Incorrect stream URL or key, inactive live streaming, or an encoder that has not started publishing. Confirm live streaming is enabled, recheck the selected stream’s URL and key, and verify that the encoder is actually sending. Do not share the key while troubleshooting.
The feed connects but shows warnings or poor stream health Output settings do not match the selected YouTube guidance, or the upload connection cannot sustain the stream. Review the matching resolution/frame-rate bitrate row, CBR, keyframe interval, and sustained upload capacity. Reduce the output demands if the connection or encoder cannot keep up.
Playlist playback stops or skips an item The encoder may not support a source file’s format, cannot reach the shared folder, or is not configured to repeat the playlist. Test each file individually, check folder access and playlist order, and confirm repeat behavior before restarting a public stream.
Video plays but audio is missing or out of sync An unsupported or inconsistent source audio format, encoder configuration, or processing load may be involved. Check the source audio track, use an audio format supported by the encoder and YouTube guidance, and test a representative file through the complete path.
The NAS encoder cannot keep up The model may lack sufficient real-time processing capacity for the selected output or source media. Try a less demanding output only if it meets your needs, or move encoding to a separate computer with stable access to the NAS share.
The stream drops after a restart or interruption The encoder may not restart automatically, or may lose access to its files or credentials. Test a planned restart, confirm how the encoder resumes the playlist and reconnects, and monitor YouTube stream health after recovery.

Cost and practical trade-offs

The DIY route has no substantiated mandatory hardware purchase for this setup, but the real cost depends on whether your existing NAS can encode reliably or you must keep a separate computer running. Account for that computer’s power use, the network path to the NAS, setup time, and the effort required to detect and recover from failures. Do not treat a NAS’s storage capacity as evidence that it can also perform a continuous live encode.
