Set OBS’s streaming keyframe interval to 2 seconds for a YouTube Live stream encoded with NVENC. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Configure the streaming encoder—not the separate recording encoder.
Set the OBS streaming keyframe interval to 2 seconds
- In OBS, open Settings, then select Output.
- Set Output Mode to Advanced if the streaming encoder controls are not visible.
- Open the Streaming tab and find Keyframe Interval in the encoder settings.
- Enter 2 seconds, then select Apply and OK.
This is the outgoing live-stream setting. OBS has separate recording controls; changing the recording encoder’s keyframe interval does not configure YouTube ingest. The exact labels and available controls can vary by OBS version.

Why 2 seconds is the right target
YouTube Help’s live encoder settings recommend a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds and set a ceiling of 4 seconds. NVIDIA’s OBS guide also recommends a 2-second interval for YouTube streaming. These recommendations apply to YouTube Live ingest, including when using accepted codecs such as H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and NVIDIA’s OBS streaming guide.
Keyframe interval controls how often the encoder inserts keyframes. It does not set resolution, frame rate, or bitrate; YouTube provides separate guidance for those settings.

If OBS shows the interval in frames
Some advanced NVENC controls express the keyframe interval as a frame count. Convert the desired two-second interval using the stream’s actual output frame rate:

OBS’s NVENC reference documents frame-based keyint controls and notes that additional NVENC options begin with OBS 31.0. Control names and behavior may therefore differ across versions. Use the normal Keyframe Interval field when it is available rather than copying a custom option without checking that it applies to your installed OBS version and encoder. Keep the interval separate from other encoder settings
The interval is only one part of YouTube’s encoder configuration. YouTube lists CBR as the bitrate encoding mode; do not treat the keyframe value as a bitrate or use it to decide resolution or frame rate. NVIDIA’s YouTube-specific OBS guidance also pairs CBR with a 2-second interval, but its codec suggestions depend on GPU generation. The interval recommendation does not require changing codecs or replacing compatible NVIDIA hardware.
