Yes, but not as a literal audio-only transmission. YouTube’s documented encoder workflow combines an audio track with a video track, so you can broadcast the radio program with a still image or station graphic instead of a camera or moving pictures. The bigger hurdle is permission: a station being available over the air or online does not mean its feed is cleared for YouTube retransmission.
What “audio only” means on YouTube Live
You can make radio the entire program people hear, but plan to send a visual stream component too. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies video ingest and video settings alongside audio settings. A static image or station graphic is a practical way to supply video without filming anything; it is not a substitute for having rights to the broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

This article concerns retransmitting an existing station feed through an encoder, not going live from a microphone or camera. Whether you may retransmit a particular station’s audio depends on the actual agreements covering the content and use.
Check permission before configuring the stream
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the content provider to hold all necessary rights to use live and archived content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights. They also require compliance with applicable laws and territory-specific requirements. A station’s broadcast availability alone does not establish that its agreements permit simulcasting to YouTube or archived playback.

Before proceeding, ask the station and relevant rights holders whether the permissions cover the specific YouTube use, territories, live performance, sound recordings, and any replay or archive. The answer cannot be determined without knowing the station and its agreements. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
Live copyright checks can interrupt a permitted stream
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image and warn you; if the content continues, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. YouTube says even licensed content may be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. If you have permission, ask the owner about allowlisting before the broadcast. Details are in YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

What you need
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility well before the planned broadcast. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube live streaming tips.
- Permission for the actual station feed and intended live and archived use.
- A compatible software or hardware encoder that can receive the station audio and provide a video track.
- A still image or graphic to use as the video signal, plus the YouTube stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- A reliable way to monitor the encoder output and stream health during the broadcast.
YouTube recognizes software and hardware encoders; it does not require a particular brand for this workflow. Choose one that can ingest your authorized audio source, send a video track, support your selected protocol and codecs, and provide the monitoring you need.
Set up the radio stream step by step
- Confirm channel access. Check that live streaming is enabled and that the channel has no current live-stream restriction. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and choose its visibility—public, private, or unlisted—based on your needs. Open the stream settings to obtain the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send video to your stream. YouTube explains these controls in Manage live stream settings.
- Configure the encoder’s inputs. Route the station audio feed into the encoder and add a video source such as a station graphic or still image. Confirm that the encoder is receiving the intended audio, not a muted, unintended, or unauthorized source.
- Set the delivery format. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as its streaming protocol and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video with AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate encoding, a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), 44.1 kHz stereo audio, and 128 kbps for stereo audio. Use RTMPS for encrypted delivery where available. Match the encoder’s settings to YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.
- Preview before going live. Start the encoder feed and check the Live Control Room preview. Listen for clean, correctly routed audio and confirm the image appears as expected. Test the actual audio and visual path you plan to use, rather than relying on a different test source.
- Start and monitor the broadcast. Go live through the controls for your stream and keep monitoring audio, video, and stream health. YouTube recommends testing in advance and continuously checking quality; its streaming tips cover operational checks.
Troubleshooting common problems
- The encoder connects, but no picture appears: Check that a video source is active and that the encoder is sending a supported video codec and resolution/frame-rate combination. An image on your local desktop does not necessarily mean the encoder is sending it.
- The stream has a picture but no radio audio: Check the encoder’s audio input selection, routing, mute state, and level. Confirm the audio codec and sample rate are supported and that the preview contains sound before going live.
- The broadcast is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder: YouTube may have detected third-party content. A license does not automatically prevent an interruption; contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting and resolve any rights or matching issue before resuming.
- The stream key does not work: Verify that the encoder uses the URL and key for the correct scheduled stream. If the key was exposed, replace or reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification and live-stream restrictions. If live streaming has only just been enabled, activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Audio sounds poor or unstable: Check the source feed and encoder routing first, then confirm the audio settings. YouTube’s recommendation for stereo audio is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps; test and monitor the stream before and during the broadcast.
