If OBS reports “encoding overloaded” while you play video on a YouTube Live stream, first check which OBS counter is rising. Encoding lag points to the encoding workload; rendering lag points to scene-rendering or GPU pressure; dropped frames point to the network connection. They can occur together, but changing bitrate will not fix a local encoding bottleneck by itself.
Identify the problem before changing settings
Open OBS’s Stats window while reproducing the issue, then review the end-of-stream log. Note encoding lag, rendering lag, and dropped frames separately. OBS distinguishes encoding and rendering overload from connection-related dropped frames; calling every stutter “encoder overload” can lead you to change the wrong setting. A stream can have more than one problem.

- Encoding lag: OBS is not encoding frames quickly enough for the selected output settings or encoder workload.
- Rendering lag: OBS cannot render or composite the scene on time, often because GPU capacity is constrained.
- Dropped frames: The connection to YouTube is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide explains encoding and rendering overload. Its connection troubleshooting guide covers dropped frames.
Fix rendering lag and GPU pressure
OBS must render and composite its scenes as well as encode the outgoing video. Continuous playback may add work if a player is decoding and displaying video while OBS captures or composites it, but the player alone is not proof of the cause. The result depends on your capture method, scene, video, operating system, and hardware.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Close other GPU-intensive applications, then test the same playback again.
- If a game or other rendered workload is running, cap its frame rate and reduce its graphics demand.
- Simplify the OBS scene: temporarily disable sources and effects you do not need, then add them back one at a time.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator, as OBS recommends for GPU overload.
- If lag remains, reduce output resolution or frame rate. Changing the canvas resolution is a later option because you may need to reposition sources.
Compare the Stats window before and after each change. OBS notes that frame rate affects both rendering and encoding performance; when 60 fps is not working, it suggests trying 30 fps. See the OBS troubleshooting guide.
Fix encoding lag
When encoding lag is the counter increasing, reduce the work required to encode each frame. Make one major change at a time so you can see whether it helped.

- Lower output resolution or frame rate. Lower settings reduce encoding work; frame rate can also affect rendering.
- If you use x264, test a faster preset. Faster presets generally use less CPU at the cost of some image quality. Check the result on your actual video rather than assuming the trade-off is acceptable.
- Test a compatible hardware encoder. NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel QSV can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component. Availability and results depend on the installed GPU or integrated graphics hardware and its generation. Check hardware support and current drivers before choosing an encoder; OBS’s hardware encoding guide explains the options.
Do not change bitrate as a first response to local encoding lag. Bitrate affects how much data the connection must carry; it does not establish whether your CPU or encoder can process frames in time.
Fix dropped frames separately
If dropped frames rise while encoding and rendering lag remain low, investigate the connection to YouTube and whether it can sustain the configured bitrate. Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps to diagnose network stability and bitrate. Dynamically changing bitrate may be a fallback, but it does not resolve an unstable connection’s underlying cause.

Check YouTube’s encoder settings
YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance recommends CBR for RTMP/RTMPS, supports H.264, H.265, and AV1, allows frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. These are YouTube ingest requirements and recommendations, separate from whether OBS can render and encode locally.
Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current table rather than applying one number to every stream. For context, YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 1080p at 60 fps is 17 Mbps, with 6 Mbps listed as the minimum. That is a platform ingest recommendation, not a measurement of your upload speed or local encoder capacity.

- Confirm that the selected encoder, rate-control mode, keyframe interval, codec, resolution, and frame rate meet YouTube’s current guidance.
- Run an upload-speed test and check that the connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
- Do a preflight stream using content representative of the real broadcast, including similar movement and audio.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test as well as OBS’s Stats counters.
YouTube recommends representative testing and checking stream health in its encoder guidance and live streaming troubleshooting.

Compare changes with a controlled test
To find out which adjustment helps, use the same playback clip, OBS scene, target resolution and frame rate, and test duration each time. Change one major setting at a time. Record the encoding-lag, rendering-lag, and dropped-frame counters, CPU and GPU load, picture quality, and YouTube stream health. This makes it easier to distinguish a local performance improvement from a network change or a quality trade-off.
