Playwright can capture what that authorized session renders; its screenshot feature does not grant access or bypass a paywall. If content is hidden behind a control and the automation would have to defeat that control to reveal it, do not treat screenshotting as a workaround. In the United States, that may raise anti-circumvention concerns under DMCA section 1201.
What “behind a paywall” means in practice
The important distinction is whether the publisher has authorized the browser session to see the content—not which browser automation tool takes the screenshot.

| Situation | What Playwright can capture | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Your valid subscription session can view the content through the publisher’s normal access path. | The page or content rendered in that session. | This avoids the specific act of defeating the access gate, but does not by itself settle whether saving, reproducing, or sharing the screenshot is permitted. |
| The content is not available to your session, and the workflow would need to defeat an access control to reveal it. | Playwright does not provide authorization to reveal it. | In the United States, defeating a technological measure that controls access to a copyrighted work may implicate section 1201. The facts and method matter. |
Playwright documents screenshots of a page’s viewport, a selected element, or the full scrollable page in its screenshot documentation. These are capture capabilities, not permission to access or copy the underlying material.
What U.S. law says—and what it does not decide
Section 1201(a)(1)(A) of the DMCA says: “No person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title.” The U.S. Copyright Office’s Circular 92, Chapter 12 contains the statutory text. The Copyright Office’s Section 1201 2018 FAQ gives bypassing a password control to access a subscription video streaming service as an example. That example illustrates the concern; it is not a ruling on every paywall implementation or every screenshot use.

The lawfulness of a particular case can depend on the jurisdiction, the site’s terms, how access was obtained, the technical measure involved, and what happens to the resulting image. A paid subscription does not automatically authorize every way of accessing or reproducing content, and a screenshot of content you were allowed to view is not automatically lawful to redistribute.
The Copyright Office describes section 1201 exemptions as limited and class-specific, through a triennial rulemaking process; it does not establish a general exemption for screenshots of subscription content. See the Copyright Office’s section 1201 rulemaking information. This is a U.S.-oriented baseline, not legal advice or a determination about a particular publisher or country.

Capture only content your session is authorized to view
For engineering documentation, QA, or personal reference, use an account and access path the publisher authorizes. Confirm that the content is actually visible in the browser session, and check the publisher’s terms before retaining or sharing a screenshot. If the page is blocked or the content is not rendered for your account, obtain access or permission from the publisher rather than changing the automation to defeat the restriction.
For authorized material, Playwright’s ordinary screenshot methods are sufficient. The following examples use the locally hosted page supplied by Playwright’s documentation; replace it with a page you own or are authorized to capture.

Node.js: capture the visible viewport
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://playwright.dev/', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
await browser.close();
})();This captures the current viewport. To capture the full scrollable page, set fullPage: true. To capture one element, locate it and call its screenshot method:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
await page.locator('main').screenshot({ path: 'main.png' });Playwright’s documentation covers additional screenshot options, including image format and masking, in its screenshot guide. Use those options only on content you are authorized to access and capture.

For a page you are authorized to capture, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot with one GET request. Its clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright log in to a subscription site for me?
Playwright automates browser interactions, but automation does not supply an account or authorization. Use only a login and access method the publisher permits.
Does a U.S. section 1201 exemption generally allow screenshots of paywalled articles?
The cited Copyright Office materials describe limited, class-specific exemptions, not a general paywall-screenshot exemption. Whether a specific exception applies requires analysis of its scope and facts.
Can I share a screenshot just because I could view the page?
Not necessarily. Permission to view and permission to reproduce or distribute are separate questions; check the publisher’s terms and applicable law.
