Recommended OBS settings for a 720p30 YouTube stream

YouTube’s listed minimums for 720p30 are 3 Mbps for H.264 and 2 Mbps for AV1/H.265. A minimum is not the recommended target. The values above come from YouTube Help’s encoder settings page, accessed in 2026: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Set the values in OBS

Open OBS and go to Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720 and Common FPS Values to 30. OBS documents these output controls in its OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Go to Settings → Output and select the Streaming section. Set Rate Control to CBR, enter the bitrate that matches the codec you will send, and set Keyframe Interval to 2 s. OBS typically presents the interval in seconds; if your encoder instead asks for frames, use 60 frames at 30 fps.

Choose an encoder and codec supported by your OBS setup and YouTube ingest workflow. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; do not apply the H.264 bitrate recommendation automatically to AV1 or H.265. The cited official guidance does not establish which encoder will perform best on a particular computer.

In OBS, configure the stream service and stream key for YouTube. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Apply the settings, start a private or unlisted test stream if appropriate, and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before depending on a long-running broadcast.

How to choose between the codec bitrate targets
Use the target for the codec YouTube actually receives: 8 Mbps for H.264, or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 720p30. A codec choice also depends on whether your selected OBS encoder and ingest workflow support it reliably. The cited sources give no hardware performance benchmarks, so there is no evidence-based universal winner for every computer.
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, and OBS notes that streaming bitrate depends on available upload speed and service limits. Test with motion and audio representative of the eventual stream. If OBS or YouTube reports instability, lower the bitrate and test again rather than assuming the nominal connection speed will sustain the configured rate continuously.
Does a loop stream need a different bitrate?
No special 720p30 bitrate is established for a loop, static scene, or unattended stream. YouTube’s official table is organized by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so the ordinary 720p30 settings are the supported baseline. Low-motion footage may encode differently in practice, but the cited official guidance does not quantify a loop-specific adjustment or define a lower loop-stream bitrate.

YouTube transcodes ingested streams, including the source feed, so viewers can receive alternate playback formats. That does not eliminate the need for a stable, correctly configured source stream. Test before leaving a loop live
- Use representative content: include the motion, scene changes, and audio levels expected in the real loop.
- Watch the preview and health: check YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health messages during the test.
- Confirm the connection can sustain the setting: YouTube advises running an upload bitrate speed test, but a speed test is not a substitute for observing the actual stream.
- Check the stream after changes: if you lower bitrate, switch codec, or alter resolution, run another test before relying on the stream.

Troubleshooting bitrate and stream health
OBS drops frames or YouTube reports an unstable stream
The configured bitrate may exceed what the upload connection can sustain consistently, or the connection may vary. Test again at a lower bitrate, then inspect stream health. A speed test provides a useful upload estimate, but the live test is the practical check for the stream itself.

The video looks soft or blocky
Confirm OBS is sending 1280×720 at 30 fps and that the bitrate corresponds to the codec YouTube receives. If you are below YouTube’s recommended target, test at the recommended value only if your connection remains stable. Increasing bitrate is not helpful if it makes the stream drop or stutter.
Quality changes between viewers or playback options are rough
Verify the keyframe interval is 2 seconds and does not exceed YouTube’s 4-second limit. YouTube transcodes the source feed, but a consistent keyframe interval remains part of the recommended setup.
The stream will not connect
Check that OBS is configured for the intended YouTube service, that the correct stream key is entered, and that the stream is active in the YouTube encoder workflow. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. If you regenerate or replace a key in YouTube, update OBS with the current one.
