To stream an MP3 playlist to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, provide both the playlist audio and a compatible video stream, then send the encoded output to the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; for stereo audio, its guidance recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. The exact FFmpeg setup depends on whether your MP3 files can be joined directly or need to be normalized first.
What you need before starting
- A working FFmpeg installation, plus a playlist and its audio files accessible to the computer running FFmpeg.
- A video source. YouTube’s live encoder requirements call for video as well as audio; audio-only MP3 playback is not a complete encoder stream. A static visual encoded as video or a looped background video can serve as the visual component.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, with the ingest URL and stream key available in Live Control Room. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a shared command, log, or screenshot.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the outgoing video and audio bitrate. Test the actual connection rather than assuming its advertised speed is consistently available.
- Permission to broadcast every audio track and visual used. Use only content you have the rights to stream; the technical steps below do not grant those rights.
YouTube’s current encoder guide supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its guide recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. Confirm the current guidance on YouTube’s live encoder settings page before a long broadcast, since platform settings can change.

Prepare the playlist and choose how to join its audio
Use a concat demuxer when files are compatible
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join compatible inputs without re-encoding. This is useful when avoiding another lossy MP3 encode matters, but it is not a guarantee that any collection of MP3 files will play seamlessly. The files and streams need compatible properties for the chosen concat path. Consult the FFmpeg FAQ and the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A concat-list file is a separate input that can supply audio alongside a video input. A community mailing-list example demonstrates that general pattern, but it is illustrative, not a universal playlist command: it does not establish that every MP3 collection will stream-copy without gaps or errors. See the FFmpeg-user example only as an example of the arrangement, not as a tested recipe for your files.

Normalize or filter when inputs differ
If files have different encoding properties, switching between them produces errors, or the concat demuxer cannot handle the inputs as a continuous stream, use an appropriate concat filter or transcode the audio to a consistent format before broadcasting. FFmpeg distinguishes the concat demuxer, often used to avoid re-encoding, from the concat filter, used when re-encoding is appropriate. Inspect the stream mapping and test transitions between representative files before starting a long stream.
There is no single command established here that handles every playlist’s metadata, stream properties, gaps, and infinite-loop behavior. Verify any playlist syntax against the version of FFmpeg you run and test a short broadcast first.

Set YouTube-compatible output
Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include these video bitrates. They are YouTube’s published guidance, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection can sustain them:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps |
| 4K at 30 fps | 30 Mbps |
| 4K at 60 fps | 35 Mbps |
Choose an output your upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube recommends CBR and a keyframe interval of two seconds, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Set the interval in relation to the output frame rate when configuring your video encoder. These recommendations are from YouTube Help, accessed in 2026.

Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.

Audio
YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. AAC is a sensible output choice when transcoding a mixed collection of MP3s to a consistent stream; MP3 is also listed as supported. If you transcode, check that the outgoing channel layout and sample rate are what you intend.
Protocol and credentials
Use the ingest URL and stream key supplied by your channel’s Live Control Room rather than copying credentials from another channel or an old setup. Prefer RTMPS, which YouTube recommends as the secure extension to RTMP. FFmpeg documents RTMP and RTMPS in its protocol documentation; the YouTube Live API also documents stream resources at Google for Developers.

Build and test the FFmpeg setup
The broadcast needs two sources: the audio playlist and a video input. The playlist can be supplied as a concat input, while a static visual or looped video supplies the video stream. The exact input options depend on the files and video source, so do not paste an unverified image-loop command or assume one concat line suits every collection. Once the inputs are prepared, configure FFmpeg to map the video and playlist audio to the output, encode or package them in a YouTube-compatible format, and send the output to the RTMPS ingest endpoint with your stream key.
Recommended Free Tools
- Inspect your inputs. Confirm the playlist references files that exist, and inspect representative tracks for consistent codec and stream properties. Check the video source’s resolution and frame rate.
- Select the concat path. Use the concat demuxer only when the inputs are compatible with it. If they are not, normalize/transcode the audio or use a concat filter as appropriate.
- Map both streams. Ensure the output contains the playlist audio and a video stream. Check FFmpeg’s stream mapping in its startup output; an audio-only output will not meet the video encoder requirements.
- Configure output settings. Select a resolution and frame rate, use CBR, set a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and configure audio for stereo 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps if following YouTube’s recommendation.
- Use the channel’s live credentials. Send the output to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key displayed in Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
- Run a short test before the intended broadcast. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Confirm audio and video appear in the live preview, listen for transitions or gaps, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Start the scheduled or intended broadcast only after the test is clean. Monitor stream health and FFmpeg output during the event so you can spot connection, encoding, or input failures.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube preview has audio but no picture: The output may lack a mapped video stream, or the visual input may not be reaching the encoder. Confirm the output includes video and that the video input remains active.
- Playlist fails at a track transition: The tracks may not be compatible with the selected concat method. Check their stream properties; normalize or transcode them, or use a suitable concat filter.
- There are gaps, silence, or unexpected transitions: Test the playlist at the transition points, verify every referenced file is available, and inspect stream mapping and FFmpeg errors. A concat list does not guarantee gapless playback for arbitrary MP3 files.
- The stream will not connect: Recheck the ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room, confirm you selected the correct channel’s credentials, and verify you are using a supported RTMP/RTMPS endpoint.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops: Check the upload connection and whether it can sustain the chosen bitrate; lower the output resolution or bitrate if needed. Review FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s stream-health messages for encoding or connectivity clues.
- Audio sounds wrong or is rejected: Check that the output codec is AAC or MP3 and review the stereo sample rate and bitrate. For YouTube’s stereo recommendation, use 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
