Start with veryfast as the OBS x264 preset, then test the actual loop. If encoding lag appears, try superfast or ultrafast; these use less CPU but can look worse at the same bitrate. No preset is guaranteed to run continuously on unspecified hardware: resolution, frame rate, motion, bitrate, CPU headroom and upload stability all matter.
Which x264 preset uses the least CPU in OBS?
Of the common x264 presets, ultrafast uses the least CPU, followed by superfast and then veryfast. Faster presets do less compression work per frame, which can help a weak CPU keep up, but they are less efficient: at the same bitrate, the picture may look worse. Moving to a faster preset is therefore a performance trade-off, not a free improvement.

For a low-power 24/7 loop, begin at veryfast. OBS’s x264 streaming guidance uses it as a baseline. If OBS reports encoding lag while the stream is active, test superfast, then ultrafast if necessary. Compare image quality at the same output settings and bitrate; do not assume the fastest preset is automatically the best overall choice.

OBS’s Advanced Recording guide lists x264 CRF 16–23, a 2-second keyframe interval, veryfast, High profile and None tune as a recording baseline. CRF is recording-oriented advice, not the rate-control setting to copy into a YouTube live stream.

Set OBS for a YouTube H.264 live stream
OBS labels can vary slightly by version. In current versions, configure the stream output under Settings > Output, with Output Mode set to Advanced; set canvas and output dimensions under Settings > Video. Choose the target resolution and frame rate for the content and hardware, then use these live-encoding settings:
- Encoder: x264.
- Rate Control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Bitrate: choose within YouTube’s H.264 recommendation range for the selected output. The ranges below are YouTube recommendations, not x264 preset values.
- Keyframe Interval: 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- CPU Usage Preset: veryfast to start; test superfast or ultrafast if the CPU cannot keep up.
- Profile: High is a reasonable H.264 choice where available.
- Tune: None, unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Stream transport: use RTMPS where supported; YouTube recommends the encrypted transport.
For the stream key, open YouTube Studio, go to Go live, and select or create the stream in the live control room. Copy its stream key into OBS at Settings > Stream using YouTube as the service. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to stream to your channel. Do not publish it, put it in a public scene, or share screenshots that expose it.

Use YouTube’s current H.264 guidance for your chosen resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s table, accessed in 2026, gives these examples:

These are platform ingest recommendations; they do not guarantee that a particular loop will look good or that an internet connection can sustain the chosen rate. A mostly still image may need less bitrate than busy animation or detailed motion, but there is no reliable universal reduction. OBS’s own older bitrate chart assumes veryfast and low-to-medium motion, so treat it as a starting reference rather than a promise. Prefer YouTube’s current table for the output you select.

Set the bitrate below the connection’s reliably sustained upload capacity, leaving headroom for normal variation and other network use. If the connection cannot sustain the selected output, reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate within YouTube’s applicable guidance and test again. For a static or slow-moving loop, a lower frame rate or resolution may be entirely adequate, depending on the image and intended viewing quality.
How to test the preset before leaving the stream unattended
- Prepare a representative scene. Use the actual loop, including its busiest movement, transitions and audio. A static desktop test does not reveal the encoder load of animated content.
- Set the intended output first. Choose the resolution, FPS, CBR bitrate and 2-second keyframes you plan to keep. Preset results are meaningful only in the context of those settings.
- Start a YouTube test stream. Follow YouTube’s instruction to test before going live and watch the stream health indicators in YouTube Studio. The channel and stream must be eligible and configured for live broadcasting.
- Check OBS for encoding lag. OBS’s Stats window can show rendering and encoding performance; look for missed or skipped frames attributed to encoding. Network-dropped frames point to a connection issue rather than an x264 preset by itself.
- Change one setting at a time. If encoding lag occurs, try a faster preset first. If the result is visually poor, consider a lower resolution or frame rate, or a bitrate adjustment that remains suitable for YouTube and the available upload. Retest after each change.
- Run a realistic unattended trial. Verify the loop, audio, upload connection, machine cooling and power arrangement under the intended conditions. No OBS preset or cited guidance certifies a particular low-power PC for 24/7 uptime.
Can a low-power PC run OBS continuously?
Possibly, but there is no universal CPU threshold. OBS notes that system requirements do not guarantee streaming performance: workload varies with encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity. x264 uses the CPU; OBS generally recommends a compatible hardware encoder for performance because it shifts encoding work to a specialized GPU component. Hardware encoding is a separate encoder choice, not an x264 preset, and only helps if the machine has suitable supported hardware.

For an x264-only setup, preserve CPU headroom rather than tuning solely for peak picture quality. A loop with little motion can be easier to encode than detailed animation at the same resolution and FPS, but measure the real workload. Also account for stable internet, power interruptions, operating-system restarts, heat and the consequences of the computer or home connection going offline. A successful short test does not establish long-term uptime.
Troubleshooting common problems
- Encoding lag or skipped frames from encoding: x264 may be asking more of the CPU than it can deliver. Try superfast or ultrafast, reduce output resolution or FPS, simplify animated overlays, and retest the representative loop.
- Image looks blocky or soft: a faster preset is less compression-efficient at a fixed bitrate. Test veryfast again if the CPU can manage it, or raise bitrate only within YouTube’s guidance and the connection’s stable capacity. Complex motion may require more bitrate than a still image.
- Stream health shows network problems: check that upload bandwidth is stable, reduce the configured bitrate or output demands, and avoid saturating the connection with other traffic. A preset change does not repair an unstable upload.
- YouTube rejects or warns about stream settings: verify H.264 output, CBR, the 2-second keyframe interval, supported resolution/FPS and the current YouTube bitrate guidance. Check that OBS is using the intended stream key.
- Stream stops when the PC sleeps, restarts or loses internet: check operating-system sleep and power settings, machine temperature and network reliability. OBS running locally depends on the computer and its connection remaining available; a preset cannot prevent those interruptions.
- Music, footage or a loop is claimed or restricted: use content you have the rights to stream and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies. A stream being pre-recorded or continuously looped does not itself establish permission or guarantee monetization eligibility.
