For a playlist-based YouTube radio stream, use OBS as the broadcast workspace and its VLC Video source to play a multi-file playlist. OBS can build the visual scene and send the stream to YouTube; the VLC Video source supplies the playlist and can loop or shuffle it. For one file, OBS’s built-in Media Source is simpler. These are complementary tools in the documented multi-file workflow—not a proven head-to-head contest in which standalone VLC is the better YouTube sender.
OBS vs VLC: which setup fits a YouTube radio stream?
| Need | Recommended setup | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one local audio or video file | OBS Media Source | It has a loop control and supports common audio and video formats. OBS Media Sources |
| Play several local files as a queue | OBS with VLC Video source | The source accepts a playlist and offers loop and shuffle controls. VLC must be installed. OBS Media Sources |
| Compose a stream with scenes, overlays, text, or other visual elements | OBS | OBS scenes and sources form the stream’s visual output. OBS Sources Guide |
| Send a playlist directly from standalone VLC to YouTube | Not established by the available official guidance | The cited sources explain OBS’s VLC Video source and YouTube’s encoder setup, but not a current end-to-end standalone VLC workflow. |
So the practical choice for multiple tracks is usually OBS plus VLC: OBS handles the scene and broadcast output, while its VLC Video source plays the playlist. There is no cited head-to-head benchmark showing that OBS or standalone VLC is more reliable or performs better.

Set up a looping playlist in OBS
Before you begin
- Install OBS and VLC. The VLC Video source appears only when VLC is installed; OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources
- Prepare the files you are authorized to broadcast and decide whether you want them to play in order, repeat, or shuffle. Owning a file or having access to a music subscription does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it.
- Enable live streaming on your YouTube channel. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to start streaming. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
Add the playlist source
- Open OBS and select or create a scene for the radio stream.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video Source. If it is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS—64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- In the source properties, add the playlist files. Use the available playlist controls to set looping or shuffling to suit the station. The source also includes visibility behavior, network caching, and audio-track settings; adjust them only where the source or media requires it. OBS Media Sources
- Arrange the source in the scene. For an audio-first station, a static visual or other scene elements can supply the picture; check the composition in OBS before going live.
- Test playback and transitions. Confirm that audio is present, the intended files play in the right order, and the picture is what you want viewers to see.
Loop a single file instead
For one recording, add Media Source rather than VLC Video Source and enable its loop control. OBS documents common audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, and video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. OBS Media Sources

- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Enter the YouTube stream URL and key in OBS’s streaming settings, then configure the output. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes connecting an encoder with the URL and key, configuring output, and starting the encoder. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Choose stream quality that fits your available upload connection. YouTube’s encoder settings page lists H.264 bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate; use the row for your chosen output rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 128 Kbps audio bitrate and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. These are YouTube settings recommendations, not measured comparisons between OBS and VLC. YouTube encoder settings

Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before starting for viewers, verify the event is accessible, and monitor stream health and YouTube’s messages while live. Rights, continuity, and practical limits
Confirm music and visual rights
Use only media you have permission to broadcast on YouTube. A file purchase, personal-use license, or streaming subscription may not include public performance or livestream rights. The official setup and OBS pages cited here describe technical configuration, not whether a particular track or license is cleared for a YouTube radio stream. Confirm the rights and license scope with the rights holder or provider before broadcasting.

Plan for a long-running stream
OBS running locally depends on the computer, software, and network connection remaining available. Test the playlist and YouTube connection for the duration you intend to stream, and check YouTube’s stream-health indicators rather than assuming a successful start guarantees uninterrupted playback. The cited official sources do not establish an OS-by-OS reliability comparison or automatic recovery behavior for OBS or standalone VLC.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded recordings while your computer is off, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a local OBS/VLC setup. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera.
