A URL import that receives a Cloudflare challenge or access-denied response needs a different fix from a conversion or export failure. Check the failed task, its error, and the HTTP response before changing Cloudflare settings; the error code alone does not establish the root cause.
Find the failed CloudConvert task first
A CloudConvert job is made up of tasks, commonly including import, conversion, and export. In the job details, locate the failed task and record its operation, status, error code and message, and input URL. URL imports use the import/url operation. CloudConvert’s API documentation describes jobs and tasks; its Import Files documentation covers URL imports.
- If
import/urlfailed, investigate whether CloudConvert could retrieve the source. - If the import succeeded but conversion failed, inspect the conversion task and its reported error; a Cloudflare access problem is not established by that failure alone.
- If conversion succeeded but export failed, investigate the destination or export task rather than changing the source site’s Cloudflare settings.
Check what the URL returns to a remote request
Open the source URL in a private browser window and, if possible, make a request that does not use your logged-in browser session. Confirm that the URL serves the intended file, not an HTML challenge, access-denied page, login redirect, or unrelated redirect. A page that works for you in a browser may still be inaccessible to an automated importer.
If the source requires authorization, CloudConvert documents support for additional request headers on URL imports. Provide only credentials you are authorized to use, and avoid placing secrets in logs or publicly shared job details. If URL import is not appropriate, CloudConvert documents other import methods as well. Its import documentation cautions against base64 imports for files over 10 MB.

Use the response to distinguish a 403, 522, or 524

Use Cloudflare’s guidance for 403 errors, 522 errors, and 524 errors. These codes direct investigation; they do not, by themselves, prove which rule or system caused a particular CloudConvert job to fail.
Fix the issue according to who controls the site
If you own or administer the Cloudflare zone
- Match the request time and URL to Cloudflare security events. Check applicable WAF, challenge, and access rules, then review the origin response and permissions where relevant.
- For a 522, verify the origin is reachable, healthy, and configured at the correct IP; check firewall rules for Cloudflare IP ranges.
- For a 524, check origin processing time and load. If the operation is long-running, consider an asynchronous workflow with status polling.
- Use an authorized access path for the importer. Adjust only the rules needed for that path and preserve protections for other traffic.
Cloudflare provides separate guidance for challenge troubleshooting and WAF troubleshooting. The available evidence does not establish that CloudConvert can solve a browser challenge automatically.

If you do not control the Cloudflare zone
Do not try to bypass the site’s challenge or weaken its security. Ask the site owner for an authorized download URL, credentials or request headers supported by CloudConvert, or another permitted way to provide the file. If you are only converting a file you already possess, use an appropriate CloudConvert import method instead of asking its URL importer to retrieve a protected page.
Escalate with enough evidence to diagnose the failure
For an unresolved 5xx error, Cloudflare recommends recording the exact code, time and timezone, and URL. Include the failed CloudConvert task operation and error details, the response status and body (redacting credentials), and relevant origin logs. Check intervening load balancers, caches, proxies, and firewalls too: the cause may not appear in origin logs alone. See Cloudflare’s 5xx troubleshooting guidance.
