If OBS shows dropped frames while YouTube Live Control Room reports a stream-health warning, start by checking the connection and lowering the video bitrate to a level your upload connection can sustain. Then test OBS’s Windows network options and isolate Wi-Fi, VPN, security software, or ISP issues. Treat “encoding overloaded” as a separate performance problem: it usually calls for reducing GPU load or output demands, not changing your internet connection.
First identify which signal is failing
During a test or live stream, note the warning and its timestamp in YouTube Live Control Room. In OBS, check the dropped-frame counter and connection status. Compare their timing: a warning that starts when OBS begins dropping frames points toward the network path or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. A choppy picture without rising network drops, especially with an “encoding overloaded” message, points instead toward rendering or encoding performance.

- OBS dropped frames: OBS defines these as the client failing to maintain a stable connection to the remote server or sustain the configured bitrate. A sufficiently high number can disconnect the stream.
- YouTube stream-health warning: Use the timestamp and warning text to identify the reported ingest issue. YouTube classifies red warnings as critical and yellow warnings as moderate.
- Encoding overload: OBS cannot render or encode frames quickly enough. This is distinct from network packet loss.
OBS says it is “extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” Begin with connection stability and bitrate when the dropped-frame counter rises; do not assume OBS itself is the network fault. Lower the bitrate to match stable upload capacity
In OBS, open Settings → Output and reduce Video Bitrate. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a general starting heuristic, not a guarantee. Base your choice on upload capacity that remains stable, not the highest result from a one-off speed test. Leave headroom for normal network variation and other household traffic.

YouTube’s current encoder-settings table recommends the following H.264 video bitrates for these configurations:

These are YouTube’s recommendations for H.264, not universal minimum upload speeds. The current table also provides separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265, and values depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. If your connection cannot sustain the recommended bitrate, lower the resolution or frame rate rather than trying to hold a configuration the connection cannot carry. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before settling on a configuration.

Test OBS network options on Windows
- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network.
- Enable Network Optimizations and TCP pacing. OBS says these Windows-only options may help some users and add troubleshooting detail to logs.
- Confirm Bind to IP is set to Default.
- As a diagnostic, change IP Family to IPv4 Only, then test the stream. If it does not help, restore the IPv4 and IPv6 default.
Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment (Beta) can lower bitrate when a connection cannot keep up. It is a fallback, not a root-cause fix: OBS notes that it reduces video quality. If you enable it, continue investigating the connection problem rather than treating the feature as a substitute for stable upload capacity.

Change one variable at a time and run a comparable test stream after each change. Watch whether OBS’s dropped-frame counter stops increasing and whether the YouTube warning clears; repeat a promising fix to check that the improvement holds.

- Wi-Fi: If feasible, test a wired Ethernet connection to the router. An Ethernet cable is an optional way to make this comparison; it will not fix ISP route congestion, an unsuitable bitrate, VPN interference, or encoding overload.
- VPN: Test with the VPN disconnected. OBS notes that VPN use can make the connection unstable.
- Security software: Temporarily disable it only long enough to test whether it is interfering. Restore protection afterward; if the test identifies the cause, add an OBS exception instead of leaving protection disabled.
- Traffic-priority or optimization utilities: Check bundled software that manages network priority. OBS names Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples that may deprioritize OBS. Follow OBS’s current directions for the specific utility rather than indiscriminately uninstalling software.
- Network drivers: Install current drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.
- Router and modem: Restart them, and consider whether a cable, router, modem, network card, switch, or extender could be a faulty link. If you are unsure which equipment is at fault, OBS advises consulting your ISP before replacing hardware.
If drops continue, contact your ISP with the times they occurred, OBS logs, your connection type, and the troubleshooting already completed. Route congestion or changes on the provider’s side may be outside your control. YouTube also provides a live-stream troubleshooting guide.
Match encoder settings to YouTube’s warning
Use the specific Live Control Room warning to choose what to check; changing unrelated settings can make diagnosis harder. YouTube’s error guidance associates format warnings with codec or container issues, bitrate warnings with the chosen resolution, and video warnings with matters such as stream count, interlacing, frame rate, keyframe frequency, or resolution.

- Format or codec warning: Check that the selected codec and container match YouTube’s current supported settings.
- Bitrate warning: Compare OBS’s configured bitrate with the recommendation for your selected resolution and codec. Lower the bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the setting.
- Keyframe warning: YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame-rate, resolution, or interlacing warning: Compare the actual OBS output with the selected stream configuration and YouTube’s current requirements.
YouTube’s current encoder-settings page lists RTMP and RTMPS options, including H.264, H.265, and AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. Advanced recommendations vary by stream type. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Before a consequential stream, test with similar motion and audio, then monitor stream health during the event. Consult the official encoder-settings page for the settings that apply to your configuration.
Only follow the performance path when its signals fit
If OBS reports “encoding overloaded,” or output is choppy while the network-drop counter is not rising, troubleshoot system performance rather than treating it as packet loss.

- On Windows, run OBS as administrator.
- Close programs you know are placing heavy load on the GPU.
- If the problem persists, reduce output resolution or frame rate. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
