Choose OBS if you want to build and adjust a visual scene in a graphical interface; choose FFmpeg if you want a compact, repeatable command-line loop and are comfortable maintaining the process. Both can loop prepared media, but neither loop setting guarantees a 24/7 broadcast: continuous availability also depends on the host computer, power, internet connection, and a monitoring and restart plan.
OBS vs FFmpeg: which fits a sleep ambience stream?

Neither tool is categorically more stable on the available evidence; there is no comparative endurance test establishing that. The practical difference is workflow: visual controls and scene editing in OBS versus a scriptable, fixed pipeline in FFmpeg.

Set up a repeating video in OBS
Loop one local file
- In OBS, create or select a scene, then add a Media Source.
- Select the local video file and enable the source’s Loop property. OBS documents Loop as off by default; it makes the file play again after playback finishes.
- Check playback in the preview and confirm that the end transitions back to the beginning as intended. Check the audio too, especially for a gap, abrupt cutoff, or level change at the join.
OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among supported video types, and MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among supported audio types. See the OBS Media Sources documentation for supported source types and current controls.

- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source type to appear.
- Make sure the VLC and OBS architectures match: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source, populate its playlist, and check Loop Playlist. OBS documents that option as on by default, so verify its state rather than assuming it has changed.
A playlist is useful when you want several recordings to play in sequence before repeating. Confirm every item plays correctly, and that the playlist order and transitions suit a quiet, uninterrupted ambience stream.

Loop a file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop is an input option. Put it with the input it applies to; -1 means loop indefinitely. A schematic command is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "ambience.mp4" [encoding and audio options] [RTMPS output URL and stream key]The bracketed text is explanatory, not literal FFmpeg syntax: replace it with the encoding options and YouTube destination details appropriate to your stream. FFmpeg’s official documentation defines -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping and -re as native-rate input pacing, equivalent to -readrate 1. Pacing a file can matter when output packet flow needs to run in real time. Do not apply file-input pacing indiscriminately to an actual live input. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation for option placement and behavior.
This loop repeats the input; it does not supervise the FFmpeg process or restart it after a failure. A production setup that must remain available needs an operating-system-appropriate way to monitor and restart the process, along with a plan for computer, power, and network interruptions. The exact supervisor and recovery configuration depend on the operating system and are not specified by the loop option.

Configure either encoder for YouTube Live
OBS and FFmpeg must both meet YouTube’s ingest requirements. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols and recommends RTMPS: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Use the RTMPS server and stream key shown in your YouTube live control room. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or include it in a shared command, screenshot, or log.
Codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes
YouTube’s live encoder settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose the matching row in YouTube’s current settings table rather than carrying a number across formats.

These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed minimum upload speeds. YouTube advises choosing a quality your connection can reliably sustain and running a speed test. Its table gives separate recommendations by codec and frame rate; check the current YouTube live encoder settings for the combination you intend to send.

- Test before going live using audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast; a still-looking ambience scene can still have audio or encoding issues.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and read messages in the live control room during the event. A looping source does not tell you whether YouTube is receiving a healthy signal.
- Use a stable upload connection with enough headroom for the selected output. A speed-test result is a point-in-time check, not a guarantee that the connection will remain stable overnight.
YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a longer uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be archived automatically; plan separately if you need a recording. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

A technically valid loop does not establish that you have the right to broadcast its content or that the channel is eligible for monetization. Before scheduling a long ambience stream, check that you have the necessary rights to the video, music, samples, artwork, and any other included material. A long broadcast can keep repeating the same material, so verify licenses for the intended YouTube use rather than assuming that a recording is safe because it is labelled “sleep ambience” or is available online.

Also review YouTube’s current channel and monetization policies for your specific content and channel. The encoder guidance covers ingest and archiving, not whether a channel or repeated content qualifies for monetization. Common problems and what to check
- The video stops at the end. In OBS, check the Media Source’s Loop property; it is off by default. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist. In FFmpeg, confirm
-stream_loop -1is placed as an input option before the relevant-i. - VLC Video is missing in OBS. Install VLC, then confirm its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health issue. Verify the selected server and key, protocol, codec, CBR configuration, keyframe interval, and bitrate against YouTube’s current settings for the chosen resolution and frame rate. Test again with representative audio and movement.
- The stream drops when the computer sleeps or loses power. A loop setting cannot keep a local host online through sleep, shutdown, power loss, or network failure. Check the host’s power and network arrangements, and add monitoring and a restart plan suitable for the operating system.
- The stream is live but no automatic archive appears. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not rely on it for a longer nonstop broadcast.
- The loop sounds or looks abrupt. Review the join between the end and start of the source, adjust the media itself if needed, and test the complete loop before a long broadcast.
