OBS vs FFmpeg for a Nonstop Prerecorded YouTube Stream

OBS offers a visual loop-and-playlist workflow; FFmpeg suits command-line operators. Learn the YouTube setup, settings to check, and how to plan for a nonstop stream.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose OBS Studio if you want a visual setup, scenes, and straightforward playlist controls; choose FFmpeg if you are comfortable configuring and supervising a command-line process. Both can send a prerecorded video loop to YouTube Live. Neither is proven to be inherently more reliable, so plan to test and monitor whichever you use.

How OBS and FFmpeg differ

Decision OBS Studio FFmpeg
Setup Graphical sources, scenes, and controls. Command-line arguments and process configuration.
Loop one video Use a Media Source and enable its Loop option. OBS documents this capability in its Media Sources guide. A cited third-party guide uses -stream_loop -1 to repeat an input and -re to pace it in real time: FFmpeg looping guide.
Loop a playlist Use the VLC Video source, which supports playlists, looping, and shuffle. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide. Playlist handling can be scripted, but the cited guide does not evaluate playlist construction.
Best fit Creators who prefer visual setup, scene composition, and source management. Operators who prefer compact scripts and can configure and supervise the process.
Comparative reliability or CPU benchmark No controlled comparison is established by the cited sources. Results depend on configuration and operating conditions; test and monitor your own stream.

The choice is mainly about workflow, playlist needs, automation, and how you will oversee the stream—not an established reliability ranking. A third-party FFmpeg example discusses a particular re-encoding setup, but it is not a head-to-head CPU benchmark and should not be generalized.

Set up the YouTube stream first

  1. Create or schedule the live stream: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. YouTube explains the process in its encoder setup guide.
  2. Protect the stream key: Treat it like a password; it authorizes the encoder feed to reach the stream. Do not publish or share it. Reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
  3. Choose the encoder and add the prerecorded source: In OBS, add a Media Source and enable Loop, or use VLC Video for a playlist. In FFmpeg, use a looped input with real-time pacing, adapting the command to your media and output configuration rather than assuming one generic command fits every file.
  4. Enter YouTube’s ingest details: Put the stream URL and key into the encoder’s streaming/output settings. Prefer RTMPS when supported; YouTube describes it as the encrypted extension of RTMP in its live encoder settings.
  5. Match the current encoding guidance: Select a supported protocol and codec, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, and audio format. YouTube’s live encoder settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1 options, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate recommendation for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec on that page; do not apply a value for a different combination. The page is live guidance and does not show a publication or update year, so check it again before launch.
  6. Test and monitor: Start the encoder, check the YouTube preview and stream health, and verify representative motion and audio before relying on the broadcast. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Assign someone or a monitoring plan to notice a failure and take action.

OBS: loop a video or playlist

One local video

  1. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene used for the broadcast.
  2. Select the prerecorded file in the source properties and enable Loop.
  3. Check the scene preview for the intended framing, and confirm the file’s audio is present at the expected level.
  4. Connect OBS to the YouTube stream using the URL and key from Live Control Room, then test the preview and stream health before publishing.

A playlist

  1. Install VLC. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC.
  2. Add a VLC Video source and build the playlist from the files you want to play.
  3. Set the source to loop the playlist; enable shuffle only if you want playback order randomized.
  4. Check transitions, audio levels, and playback in the OBS preview, then test the YouTube feed.

OBS’s official Media Sources page is dated January 11, 2022; labels and interface details may vary in later releases.

FFmpeg: loop a file from the command line

The cited third-party implementation uses -stream_loop -1 to repeat the input and -re to read it at real-time pace before sending a feed to an RTMP endpoint. These options illustrate the approach, not a complete universal command: input format, YouTube output settings, and whether video can be copied or must be encoded depend on the media and your configuration. Consult the FFmpeg looping guide for its example workflow, then verify the result against YouTube’s current ingest guidance.

The guide’s example copies prepared video while re-encoding audio. Do not assume stream-copying is suitable for every source or that the example guarantees seamless playback. If you script a long run, decide how the process will be supervised and how an operator will detect and recover an interruption; the cited guide’s unattended-run cautions are not independently verified failure-rate findings.

Plan for a stream that stays live

  • Test before the event: Run a representative test and check YouTube’s preview, stream health, audio, and video quality. YouTube’s encoder tips also discuss testing failover.
  • Arrange supervision: An encoder choice alone does not guarantee uninterrupted service. Establish who or what will notice a stopped process or lost feed and how it will be restarted.
  • Set archive expectations: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder setup guidance. That guidance does not promise a complete archive for a stream that runs beyond 12 hours; do not rely on one indefinitely running broadcast to create a full recording.
  • Check rights and channel rules: Having permission to stream is not the same as being assured of monetization or policy compliance. Confirm you have the necessary rights to every video and audio track, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel policies. Whether a particular prerecorded stream is allowed or monetizable depends on the content, rights, and channel circumstances.

Which should you choose?

  • Pick OBS when you want a graphical workflow, scene composition, or an easy-to-manage playlist.
  • Pick FFmpeg when you are comfortable with command-line configuration and want to build the process into your own scripts and supervision.
  • Do not choose on a reliability or CPU claim alone: the cited material provides no controlled head-to-head uptime or CPU results. Validate the complete setup under your own conditions.
