How to Hide Cookie Banners Before Taking Chrome Headless Screenshots

A practical guide to hiding or handling cookie banners before Chrome Headless screenshots, with CLI and Puppeteer examples, repeatability tips, and fixes for common failures.

For a repeatable screenshot, first decide whether you need to change a test page’s appearance or record an actual consent choice. On a site you control, hide the known banner in a test-only stylesheet or environment, then capture. On a third-party site, interact with its consent controls as intended and wait for the overlay to disappear. A CSS rule that hides a banner only changes what is visible; it does not establish that the site recorded consent.

Choose the right approach for the site

A site you control

Use a test environment or a narrowly scoped test stylesheet to hide the specific consent component before capturing. This keeps the change deliberate and limited to the screenshot workflow. Avoid a broad rule that hides unrelated fixed elements, since it can remove navigation, dialogs, or other content you need to inspect.

A third-party site

Identify the actual consent interface and use its controls according to the choice you intend to make. Then wait until the overlay is gone and verify that the underlying page content is present. There is no universal cookie-banner selector or Chrome command: implementations can vary, and a banner may be injected after the initial page load.

This is practical browser-automation guidance, not jurisdiction-specific legal advice. A visually unobstructed screenshot does not show whether a consent choice was recorded correctly.

Capture with Chrome Headless

Chrome Headless runs without visible browser UI. Chrome for Developers says Headless and headful modes now share Chrome’s browser code. For a simple one-off screenshot, Chrome’s command-line options can set the capture size and timing:

chrome --headless --screenshot=shot.png --window-size=1440,1000 --timeout=5000 https://example.com

Replace https://example.com with the target URL. The command saves a screenshot; --window-size sets the dimensions, and --timeout bounds the wait before capture. A fixed timeout is convenient but can be too short for a slow page or unnecessarily long for a fast one. Chrome’s --virtual-time-budget can fast-forward time-dependent page code, but it is not a substitute for checking that the specific content or banner state you need is ready.

Use automation when the banner needs handling

For a page that requires navigation, a consent interaction, or a condition-based wait, use an automation library rather than relying on a single timed command. Puppeteer runs headless by default and provides page navigation and viewport controls. The example below captures the page after a site-specific readiness condition. Replace the example URL and selector; there is no selector that works across sites.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 1000 });
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });

  // Replace this with a meaningful condition for the target site.
  // For a third-party banner, use its real controls before waiting for it to close.
  await page.waitForSelector('main', { visible: true, timeout: 15000 });

  await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png' });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

This basic sample does not dismiss a banner automatically. For a site you own, apply the test-only styling after navigation and before capture. For a third-party site, inspect the page and automate the relevant consent control; then wait for the banner’s disappearance or another meaningful page state. Do not treat hiding an element as acceptance or rejection of consent.

Make the capture repeatable

  • Set the viewport deliberately. The viewport affects responsive layout and therefore whether the banner blocks content. Keep dimensions consistent between runs.
  • Wait for a useful condition. Prefer a visible content element or a verified banner state over an arbitrary sleep. A fixed delay can miss late-loading content.
  • Choose screenshot scope. A viewport screenshot captures the visible area. Playwright also documents element and full-page captures; use the scope that answers the visual-check question.
  • Check the result. Open the image and confirm both that the overlay is gone and that the intended page content remains. A successful file save alone does not verify either.
  • Keep test changes narrow. If you own the site, limit banner-hiding CSS to the test workflow and the known component.

Common failures and fixes

  • The banner still appears: it may load after initial navigation or use a different component than expected. Inspect the rendered page, identify the actual interface, and wait for its ready state before handling it.
  • A selector or click does nothing: the selector may not match the live page, or the control may be rendered in an iframe or shadow tree. Inspect the actual DOM and adapt the automation to that structure; do not assume a selector from another website will work.
  • The screenshot is blank or incomplete: the page may not have reached the content state you need, or the chosen viewport/screenshot scope may not include it. Wait for a meaningful element and check the saved image.
  • The banner disappears but consent is unclear: hiding pixels is not evidence of a recorded choice. Use the site’s actual controls when the goal is a consent interaction, and preserve the resulting state as appropriate to your workflow.
  • The command captures too early: increase the bounded timeout for a simple CLI capture, or use an automation-level condition for a dynamic page. A longer fixed wait still cannot guarantee the right state.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. AI agents can use its MCP server through take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

What cookie-banner studies can and cannot tell you

A 2019 study by Célestin Matte, Nataliia Bielova, and Cristiana Santos reported at least one suspected violation in 54% of 560 websites it extensively tested for banners using IAB Europe’s Transparency and Consent Framework. That figure describes the study’s sample and methods, not the prevalence of problems on all websites or current banners. A clean screenshot is a visual check, not proof that a consent interaction was correct.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Chrome Headless automatically accept or remove cookie banners?

No. Chrome provides browser capture and automation capabilities; banner handling must be specific to the target page.

Can I hide a cookie banner without accepting cookies?

You can change the visual presentation on a site you control, but hiding the interface alone does not record or communicate a consent choice.
