OBS vs. FFmpeg for a 24/7 YouTube Lofi Radio Stream

OBS suits visual, scene-based streams; FFmpeg suits a fixed scripted feed. Neither guarantees 24/7 uptime. YouTube settings, bandwidth, recovery, archives, and music rights all matter.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose OBS if you want a visual, scene-based setup you can monitor and adjust in a graphical interface. Choose FFmpeg if your lofi broadcast is a fixed, repeatable feed and you are comfortable managing a command-line process and its recovery. Neither choice guarantees 24/7 uptime: bandwidth, source continuity, monitoring, restart behavior, and music rights matter just as much. YouTube’s published ingest requirements apply whichever encoder you use.

OBS or FFmpeg: which workflow fits your stream?

What matters OBS FFmpeg
Production interface A graphical interface with scenes suits a composed layout, overlays, source changes, and operator intervention. A command-line pipeline suits a fixed feed; you need to be comfortable configuring and operating it.
Changing the broadcast Convenient when you expect to adjust visual sources or scenes. Can suit a stable, repeatable input/output pipeline, but configuration changes are operator-managed.
Monitoring and recovery The interface supports hands-on observation. Plan additional checks for unattended periods. Monitoring and restart behavior require deliberate process or service design.
YouTube compatibility The OBS project configuration lists YouTube RTMPS and legacy RTMP service settings. Confirm current settings in your OBS build. YouTube publishes encoder requirements; validate your FFmpeg build and output against them.
24/7 operation Not guaranteed by choosing OBS. Test the computer, network, media source, and recovery process. Not guaranteed by choosing FFmpeg. Test looping, input failures, process restarts, interruptions, and monitoring.

This is a workflow comparison, not a benchmark: the available platform guidance does not establish that either encoder is inherently more reliable or uses fewer resources. See OBS’s maintained streaming-service configuration and YouTube’s encoder settings for the current details.

Set YouTube’s ingest settings before going live

For RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its recommendation is 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Video bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current resolution and bitrate table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. YouTube transcodes live video for viewers using different devices and network conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prefer RTMPS and protect the stream key

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. OBS’s service configuration lists YouTube RTMPS endpoints, including rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2, as well as legacy RTMP entries. Confirm the endpoint offered by your current OBS version and YouTube Live Control Room before streaming; service details can change.

In YouTube’s encoder workflow, you provide the stream URL and stream key to the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not put a real key in a public command, screenshot, recording, or article. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s live-stream settings.

Use HLS only when your workflow calls for it

YouTube also supports HLS ingestion for supported use cases. Its HLS requirements include TS segments, a rolling playlist, HTTPS POST/PUT, and segment durations between one and four seconds. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. An ordinary lofi stream generally does not need HLS unless a codec or workflow requirement points that way. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

Prepare the stream for unattended operation

A successful start only shows that the stream began; it does not establish that it will run unattended. Test the complete chain—media, encoder, connection, YouTube ingest, and any recovery procedure—before relying on it for a long broadcast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check channel eligibility

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to stream. Confirm eligibility and configure the stream in YouTube Live Control Room before setting up either encoder. Details are on YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started page.

Preflight checklist

  • Measure outbound bandwidth. YouTube recommends having enough upload capacity for the total outgoing bitrate and leaving 20% headroom. Other devices or uploads sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream.
  • Test the exact video and audio path. Check that the intended file or sources play continuously, the audio is audible and not distorted, and the picture appears as expected in the live preview.
  • Test recovery deliberately. Check what happens if the media input ends, the connection drops, or the encoder stops. Do not assume that a process will restart or resume correctly unless you have tested it.
  • Check local recording if you need a backup. Confirm a recording can be created and played back, and that the destination has enough available storage for the planned duration.
  • Monitor during the broadcast. Check YouTube’s stream health and the actual audio and video, not only whether the encoder process is still running.

YouTube’s practical monitoring and bandwidth recommendations are on its encoder settings page. A computer or network that works for a short test is not proof that it will remain suitable for a continuous broadcast.

Plan for replay and rewind limits

A continuous 24/7 stream is not necessarily saved as a complete replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a full archive, make a local recording and check that your storage can hold it. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Clear music rights before streaming

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If copyrighted material remains in a broadcast, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright issues and confirm the rights holder’s requirements before going live.

YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to have the rights needed to use their live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. This is a platform requirement, not legal advice. A music subscription or the fact that a track is labeled “lofi” should not be treated as proof that you have permission to broadcast it.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not keep a home computer and connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded material from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or send to platforms other than YouTube.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home for the stream to keep running.
  • One flat price per slot covers the quality of the uploaded video, up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required, once per account.
  • Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.

Cost and setup trade-offs

With OBS or FFmpeg, the encoder is software; the operator supplies and maintains the computer, connection, media source, and any monitoring or recovery setup. The actual cost depends on equipment and ongoing use, so there is no universal cost comparison established here. A cloud service trades that hands-on setup for a recurring service charge. StreamNeo offers the same features on every plan; only the billing length changes:

Billing length Price
Daily $0.99 per day
Weekly $2.99 per week

Billing can be daily, weekly, monthly, for six months, or yearly; you can cancel any time. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
