Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallChoose OBS if you want to compose scenes and manage a stream through a desktop interface. Choose FFmpeg if your channel is a fixed media loop and you are comfortable maintaining a command-line workflow, logs, and restart supervision. Neither application alone guarantees 24/7 uptime: both depend on the computer, connection, YouTube settings, and a plan for detecting and recovering from failures.
OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your channel?
| What matters | OBS | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| How you operate it | Desktop interface for scenes, sources, stream and recording settings, and hotkeys. | Command-line inputs and outputs controlled by options; suitable for repeatable scripts. |
| Looping prerecorded media | Can be arranged around media sources and scenes; OBS’s overview does not describe a one-command infinite file loop. | -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely. -re paces a file at its native frame rate for real-time output. |
| Changing visuals | Convenient for composing or switching scenes and sources interactively. | Filters and stream mapping are configured through command-line options. |
| Recovery features | Includes an automatic reconnect setting. | The FIFO muxer has configurable recovery attempts for temporary output failures, but must be set up in the command. |
| Ongoing operation | More discoverable for a GUI-oriented operator, but still needs observation and a way to restart or update it. | More amenable to automation and process supervision, but you own the scripts, logs, and failure handling. |
OBS’s reconnect control and FFmpeg’s FIFO recovery options are recovery tools, not uptime guarantees. Choose based on how you want to build and operate the show, not on an assumption that either program makes a channel self-maintaining.

What you need before streaming
- A computer or server that can stay on, with dependable power and upload connectivity for the stream’s chosen bitrate.
- The prerecorded media, with compatible video and audio streams or a plan to encode them.
- A YouTube stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- A tested encoder configuration and a way to notice a stopped encoder, lost connection, or unhealthy feed.
- Rights to use the video, music, images, and other material in the stream. Streaming prerecorded content does not remove copyright obligations; review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules, including its reused-content policy, before building a channel around material you did not create or license.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health. Its current Live Control Room guidance should take precedence over copied presets because recommended settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.
Set YouTube’s ingest and stream settings
- Create or open the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Find the stream URL and key in the stream settings and enter them in OBS or the FFmpeg output. YouTube also provides encoder-controlled auto-start and auto-stop options; choose them according to how you intend to start and end the broadcast.
- Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends the secure ingest protocol. Select the matching RTMPS server URL in the encoder rather than assuming a generic server address.
- Choose the actual output resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Availability can depend on the encoder and ingest configuration.
- Set keyframes and audio deliberately. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio.
- Match bitrate to the selected YouTube row and your connection. For H.264, YouTube’s 1080p recommendations accessed on October 3, 2026 are 5–14 Mbps at 30 fps and 6–17 Mbps at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a guaranteed minimum internet speed or a promise that your host can sustain the stream. Leave upload headroom and test for stability.
- Run a private or unlisted test and inspect stream health. Verify video, audio, synchronization, and stability before relying on unattended operation. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the health indicator during the stream.
Set up a prerecorded loop in OBS
- Open OBS and configure the stream service. In Settings → Stream, choose YouTube or a custom server as appropriate, then enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
- Build the program from scenes and sources. Add a media source for the video and configure it to restart playback when the source becomes active. Arrange any other sources, overlays, or scenes needed for the program. The exact looping behavior depends on the media-source settings and how the scenes are arranged; check the current OBS controls and verify a complete cycle in a test.
- Configure output and video settings. In Settings → Output and Settings → Video, select an encoder, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio configuration that match YouTube’s current guidance and your connection. Avoid blindly copying a preset meant for another resolution, frame rate, or codec.
- Enable and test reconnect behavior. OBS provides an automatic reconnect setting. Confirm its behavior with a controlled test rather than assuming it will recover every failure or restart OBS after a computer crash.
- Go live and monitor. Start the stream, confirm the preview and health status in Live Control Room, and test the transition when the media reaches its end. Plan who or what will detect problems and restore the stream if OBS or the host stops.
If you are recording locally as well, OBS recommends MKV when an ungraceful stop is possible because it helps avoid corrupting the entire recording. Recording at higher quality or using a separate encoder can also consume more computer resources, so include that load in testing.

Loop a prerecorded file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s documented command structure places inputs before outputs, and many options apply to the next input or output. The following is a command shape, not a universal ready-to-run preset: the input path, codecs, stream mapping, bitrate, resolution, audio handling, protocol, and YouTube endpoint must match your file and current ingest settings.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "video.mp4" -c:v libx264 -b:v 6M -maxrate 6M -bufsize 12M -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This illustrative command uses H.264 at a nominal 6 Mbps, AAC audio at 128 kbps, and a 60-frame GOP. Those values are examples only; they are not suitable for every resolution or frame rate, and the keyframe interval represented by -g 60 depends on the output frame rate. Substitute the exact server URL and key supplied by YouTube, and use a current YouTube-recommended bitrate and keyframe interval for your target.

- Check the media streams. Inspect the file’s video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and audio layout. Decide whether the streams can be copied or need encoding; stream copy avoids transcoding but only works when the source is compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements.
- Build the input loop. Use
-stream_loop -1before the input to repeat it indefinitely and-reto read the file at real-time speed rather than sending it as fast as the computer can process it. - Set stream mapping and output options. Specify which audio and video streams to send, choose codecs or compatible stream copy, set bitrate and keyframes for the target, and use the protocol and URL from YouTube. Check the installed FFmpeg version’s documentation for option placement and supported encoders.
- Test a full cycle and the failure path. Confirm that the file loops, audio remains correct, and Live Control Room reports a healthy stream. Test what happens when the network or encoder process stops.
- Run under process supervision for unattended use. A shell command does not itself restart after a process exits or report an unnoticed failure. Use an appropriate service manager or supervisor, retain logs, configure restart behavior deliberately, and create an alert or monitoring check.
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer offers configurable recovery attempts for temporary output failures, but this requires additional command-line configuration and does not cover every cause of interruption. A supervisor and monitoring remain separate parts of a reliable operating plan.
How to choose and what 24/7 operation really requires
Choose OBS when
- You need to compose or switch scenes and sources without editing a command.
- A desktop interface and manual control suit the person operating the channel.
- You are prepared to monitor the computer and handle failures beyond OBS’s reconnect setting.
Choose FFmpeg when
- The show is primarily a fixed sequence of prerecorded media.
- You can maintain a command, process supervision, logs, and alerts.
- You want a repeatable pipeline and are prepared to validate codecs, mapping, and output settings yourself.
For either method, continuous operation depends on more than the encoder: host uptime, power, network quality, valid credentials, available media, YouTube ingest, and operational monitoring all matter. A UPS may help protect a streaming computer from some power interruptions, but it is optional backup power, not a substitute for testing or recovery planning.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no video | Stream URL, key, selected server, protocol, and whether the encoder is actually sending. | Re-copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm RTMPS/server configuration, and run a fresh test. Do not expose the key in shared logs or screenshots. |
| Stream health is poor or the feed drops | Upload stability, bitrate versus available headroom, host load, and network interruptions. | Test a lower suitable bitrate or frame rate, reduce competing upload traffic, and monitor Live Control Room health. A bitrate recommendation is not a guarantee of network capacity. |
| Video plays once and stops | OBS media-source loop/restart configuration or FFmpeg input options. | Verify OBS’s media-source behavior through a full test cycle; for FFmpeg, ensure -stream_loop -1 is applied to the intended input. |
| Audio is missing or out of sync | Selected audio stream, codec compatibility, source duration, and encoder load. | Check stream mapping and audio output settings, then test the whole loop while watching and listening to the YouTube preview. |
| Encoder reconnects but the channel remains offline | Whether the encoder process is still running, YouTube’s stream state, and auto-start/auto-stop configuration. | Check Live Control Room and the encoder logs, confirm the control-room options, and test the recovery sequence before leaving it unattended. |
| Process exits and never returns | OBS or FFmpeg process status, system logs, storage, and configured restart policy. | Use a process supervisor or an operator to restart it, retain useful logs, and verify that monitoring detects a stopped feed. |
