To save an AI agent’s webpage screenshot as a real WebP image, use a capture interface that supports WebP and select it explicitly. In Playwright, that means --type=webp in the agent CLI, type: "webp" with its MCP screenshot tool, or type: "webp" in the Page API. Without a format option or recognized .webp filename, Playwright may default to PNG. Choose whether you want the viewport, a page element, or the full page before capturing.
Choose how the agent will take the screenshot
There are three Playwright routes: its command-line interface, its MCP tool for AI agents, or code using the Page API. Use the interface already available in your workflow. The official interfaces support different combinations of capture target, output handling, scale, and quality; there is no universally best choice.

| Method | How the agent invokes it | Capture choices | Format and output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright agent CLI | Run a screenshot command in the browser session | Viewport or full page; CLI documentation also supports a target and high-resolution capture | Choose --type=webp and a filename such as page.webp |
| Playwright MCP | Call browser_take_screenshot |
Viewport, target element, or full page; full page cannot be combined with a target | Pass type: "webp"; the tool can return an image inline when no filename is supplied |
| Playwright Page API | Run Playwright code in your application or agent-controlled script | Viewport with page.screenshot(), or an element with its screenshot method |
Set path and type explicitly; quality is configurable for WebP |
These interfaces and their options are documented by Playwright agent CLI, Playwright MCP, and the Playwright Page API. Interfaces can change, so check the documentation for the version installed in your environment.
Decide what the screenshot should include
Viewport
A viewport screenshot captures the visible browser area. It is a good fit when the agent is inspecting a page as a person would see it at the current scroll position. In the Page API, omit fullPage to use the viewport capture.

Full page
Use full-page capture when the output should include content below the fold. In the CLI, add --full-page; in MCP, set fullPage: true; in the Page API, set fullPage: true. On the MCP tool, do not combine full-page capture with target.
One element
For a specific card, chart, or other page region, use a target selector or element screenshot method supported by the chosen interface. MCP accepts a target; the Page API provides element screenshots. A targeted capture is different from a full-page capture, so decide which output downstream work actually needs.
Capture a WebP with the Playwright Page API
Once the agent has opened the page, use an explicit WebP type and a filename ending in .webp. This example captures the full page:

await page.goto("https://example.com");
await page.screenshot({
path: "page.webp",
type: "webp",
quality: 100,
fullPage: true,
});
For only the visible viewport, remove fullPage: true. For a particular element, use the appropriate element screenshot method rather than capturing the full page. The example uses documented API options; it is not a claim that a particular page was tested.
Quality and scale
In the Page API, WebP quality 100 is lossless; lower values are lossy. Choose lower quality only if lossy compression is acceptable for the image’s purpose. Do not assume a particular reduction in file size: it depends on the page and settings.
CSS scale produces one output pixel per CSS pixel. Device scale uses device pixels and can produce larger images on high-DPI displays. CLI calls its device-pixel option --hires; MCP accepts scale: "device". Pick the scale based on how the image will be inspected or displayed.

Use the Playwright agent CLI
With the page open in the agent’s browser session, capture a full-page WebP like this:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
playwright-cli screenshot --type=webp --full-page --filename=page.webp
For a viewport capture, omit --full-page. The CLI documents --type=<png|jpeg|webp>, --filename, --full-page, and --hires. Setting --type=webp directly avoids relying only on filename inference. See the CLI screenshot documentation for the installed interface’s options.
Use Playwright MCP from an AI agent
When the agent is connected to Playwright MCP, ask it to call browser_take_screenshot with type: "webp". Set fullPage: true for a whole-page capture, or supply target for an element; those two choices cannot be combined. Set scale: "device" if you want device-pixel resolution instead of CSS-pixel scale.

If you omit a filename, the MCP tool returns the image inline in its tool response as well as saving it according to the tool’s documented behavior. This is useful when the agent needs to inspect the captured image, while a filename is more convenient when another process needs a saved artifact. Refer to Playwright’s MCP screenshot documentation for current parameters.
Wait for the page state you actually need
A screenshot is only as useful as the state it captures. Navigate to the target URL, then wait for the content relevant to your task: for example, a specific selector, a user-triggered panel, or a page state after scrolling. The screenshot documentation does not prescribe one universal wait that works for every site. A fixed delay can be insufficient on a slow page and waste time on a fast one, so base the wait on the content and the agent workflow rather than treating any single duration as guaranteed.

Common problems and fixes
- The file is PNG, not WebP. Playwright’s documented defaults are PNG when neither type nor extension selects another format. Set
type: "webp"or--type=webp, and use a.webpfilename. - The capture misses content below the fold. Use full-page capture:
fullPage: truein the Page API or MCP, or--full-pagein the CLI. Check that the chosen interface supports the target you need. - MCP rejects the capture options. Do not combine
fullPage: trueandtarget; choose the full page or the target element. - The screenshot is unexpectedly large or small in pixel dimensions. Check whether the capture uses CSS or device scale. Device scale captures device pixels and can increase dimensions on high-DPI displays.
- The screenshot shows a loading state or misses dynamic content. Wait for the relevant page state before capturing. Use a condition tied to the content or interaction needed; no universal wait duration is established by the screenshot documentation.
- The result looks degraded. Check the WebP quality setting. In the Page API, values below 100 are lossy; use 100 when lossless output is needed.
- The agent cannot find the saved file. Specify a filename or path and have the agent report it. If the workflow depends on file output, inspect the resulting artifact rather than assuming a successful tool response guarantees the expected path.
Verify and hand off the image
Ask the agent to report the saved path and whether it captured the viewport, an element, or the full page. When the image will feed another system or be archived, verify that the file exists and inspect it for the intended page state and framing. The cited Playwright documentation explains format selection and capture options but does not establish one universal output-validation command.
WebP selection alone does not guarantee a smaller file than another format for every page. If file size matters, compare outputs from the same page and capture settings rather than assuming a fixed saving. Likewise, the available documentation does not establish cross-browser equivalence or comparative performance for these routes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing the filename to .webp always guarantee WebP output?
A recognized extension can select a format in Playwright, but explicitly setting the type to WebP removes ambiguity.
Can I capture an element and the full page in one MCP screenshot?
No. The Playwright MCP screenshot tool does not allow full-page capture and a target element together.
Is WebP quality 100 lossy?
No. In the Playwright Page API, quality 100 is lossless; lower quality settings are lossy.
