Short answer: Choose OBS when you want a graphical, scene-based production workflow that an operator can supervise. Choose FFmpeg when your stream can be described as explicit inputs, mappings and outputs in a repeatable command or script—and you can build the monitoring and restart controls around it. Neither encoder alone makes a YouTube channel reliable around the clock. For either approach, YouTube’s current 4K60 guidance depends on the codec: it gives AV1 and HEVC a 10–40 Mbps range and recommends 35 Mbps for H.264, with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (maximum four seconds). Check YouTube’s current encoder settings before configuring a live stream.
OBS vs FFmpeg: which fits your 24/7 channel?
This is a workflow choice, not a proven reliability or image-quality contest. The official documentation cited here does not provide controlled 24/7 uptime, failure-rate, dropped-frame or comparative quality tests for OBS and FFmpeg. Your result depends on the source, encoding capacity, network, YouTube ingest, power and the way you monitor and recover the process.

| Decision | OBS tends to fit when… | FFmpeg tends to fit when… |
|---|---|---|
| Production control | You want a graphical interface and scene-oriented workflow, with an operator able to supervise it. | Your production is expressible as inputs, filters, stream mappings and outputs in a command or script. FFmpeg supports multiple inputs and outputs and manual stream selection with -map. FFmpeg documentation |
| Repeatability | A saved application configuration suits the way you operate the stream. | You want a scripted pipeline whose choices are explicit and repeatable. That flexibility also means you must configure and maintain those choices. |
| Encoding load | You can use a supported GPU hardware encoder. OBS says hardware encoders are generally recommended for performance versus its included x264 software encoder because they move work from the CPU to specialized GPU components. This does not establish that OBS is faster than FFmpeg. | You can select an encoder available in your particular FFmpeg build and on your machine. Do not assume a codec or hardware encoder is available without checking the installed build and testing your actual workload. OBS hardware encoding guide |
| Operations | A person can supervise the graphical application and respond to failures. | You can provide background execution, logging, health checks, alerts and restart controls around the FFmpeg process. Its background-process note is not a complete supervision or failover system. |
YouTube’s 4K60 live settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its recommendations below are codec-specific; do not treat the H.264 recommendation as a universal bitrate for every codec.
| Setting | YouTube guidance for 2160p at 60 fps |
|---|---|
| AV1 video bitrate | 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum |
| H.265 / HEVC video bitrate | 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum |
| H.264 video bitrate | 35 Mbps recommended |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps |
The same guidance calls for AAC or MP3 audio, square pixels, progressive scan and two B-frames. For SDR it lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. It names HEVC for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in this guidance. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that every encoder interface uses identical labels; verify the output in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube live encoder settings

Choose the protocol deliberately
YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension to RTMP. FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over a secure SSL connection. For a normal encoder setup, use the protocol YouTube currently recommends unless your delivery requirements give you a reason to assess another supported route.
Google also documents HLS ingestion as a separate option with specific requirements: an M2TS container, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOPs and frame rates up to 60 fps; its guide also describes HDR with HEVC. HLS is not a blanket replacement for YouTube’s RTMPS recommendation. Google’s HLS ingestion guide

Configure OBS for a 4K60 YouTube stream
OBS is the more approachable choice if you want to build scenes and manage output through a GUI. Exact menu wording can vary by OBS version, operating system and selected encoder, so use the current OBS interface and YouTube’s current ingest page together.
- Prepare the source and scene. Add the video, capture source or other elements you intend to broadcast. Confirm the canvas and output are set for 3840 × 2160 and 60 fps if the source and system can sustain them.
- Connect YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and either connect your account or select the option to use a stream key. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its stream key. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it or place it in screenshots. If you use a key manually, paste it in OBS’s stream-key field.
- Set video output. In Settings → Video, set the output resolution to 3840 × 2160 and the frame rate to 60 if appropriate for the source. In Settings → Output, select the intended encoder and configure CBR, the codec-appropriate bitrate from YouTube’s table, a two-second keyframe interval, and two B-frames where the chosen encoder exposes that control. Follow the platform’s pixel, scan and color guidance for the stream type.
- Set audio and protocol. Configure AAC or MP3 audio as supported by the selected OBS output path, and use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS service/ingest option where available. Confirm that audio is present and not clipping before going live.
- Start a test and inspect ingest. Start the stream, then check YouTube Live Control Room for stream health, resolution, frame rate and warnings. A configured value in OBS is not proof that the same format reached YouTube. Resolve warnings before relying on a continuous broadcast.
- Plan for continuity. Keep the source available, ensure the computer and network can run continuously, and arrange a person or external process to notice a stopped stream and restart it. A saved OBS profile is not itself a watchdog, power backup or failover path.
Build a repeatable FFmpeg workflow
FFmpeg is useful when you can specify the input, stream selection, encoding and destination explicitly. There is no single safe command for every 4K60 channel: inputs, audio layout, codec support, key handling and FFmpeg build differ. Use the official option documentation for the installed version, and verify the resulting stream in YouTube Live Control Room.

Select a video encoder actually available in your build, then set 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps when supported by the source and hardware. Apply CBR and the appropriate YouTube bitrate: 10–40 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC, or 35 Mbps recommended for H.264. Set a two-second keyframe interval, never over four seconds, and two B-frames where supported. Configure compliant audio, pixel format and color characteristics for SDR or HDR as applicable.
- Publish using the current ingest details. Use YouTube’s current RTMPS ingest address and stream key. Keep the key private, avoid embedding it in logs or shared scripts, and use the output format and protocol required by your chosen ingest route.
- Run it in the background carefully. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends
-nostdinor redirecting standard input so a background process does not suspend while checking console input. That only addresses console-input behavior; add logging, health monitoring, alerting and a restart policy separately. FFmpeg FAQ - Validate and supervise. Start with a short test, inspect YouTube Live Control Room, and check the local FFmpeg logs for input, encoding and connection errors. For a 24/7 goal, decide who or what detects a failed process, a lost input, a network outage or an ingest disconnect, and how it recovers.
What makes a stream continuous—and what does not
A 24/7 plan needs more than an encoder preset. The full chain includes the source remaining available, enough compute for the selected codec and frame rate, a stable path to YouTube, an active ingest, working audio/video, power and an operational response when a link breaks. The reviewed documentation does not establish that either OBS or FFmpeg automatically supplies end-to-end failover or continuous uptime.
- Source: A file, capture device or other input can disappear, end, freeze or change format.
- Encoding: A machine may not sustain the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate. Check dropped frames and system load under the real workload rather than inferring performance from the application name.
- Network and ingest: Local connectivity does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery to YouTube. Watch the platform’s health status and plan what happens after a disconnect.
- Process and power: A background command or open GUI is not a restart policy. A machine shutdown or stalled process needs detection and recovery beyond the basic encoder configuration.
Copyright, reused content and YouTube rules
Technical compliance does not establish that you have rights to stream a video or that the channel qualifies for monetization. Use content you own or are licensed to broadcast, including music and any material embedded in a recording. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and monetization policies for your channel and content before leaving a loop online. A long-running or repeated stream is not, by itself, evidence of permission or eligibility.

Troubleshooting common 4K60 problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports a bitrate or stream-health warning | Rate control, bitrate, encoder output or available network capacity | Confirm CBR and the codec-specific 2160p60 guidance. Inspect Live Control Room and the actual encoder output rather than changing bitrate blindly. |
| Stream arrives at the wrong resolution or frame rate | Source format, output scaling, frame-rate setting or encoder limits | Check the source, OBS output settings or FFmpeg filters/options, then confirm the received format in Live Control Room. |
| Video looks unstable or frames are dropped | Encoding load, source capture or network delivery | Check system and encoder load, source stability, dropped-frame indicators and connection health. Test hardware encoding if supported; neither application is guaranteed to win on every machine. |
| Audio is missing or incorrect | Stream mapping, selected track, input routing or audio codec | In OBS, check the active audio source and output track. In FFmpeg, inspect the input streams and explicit -map selections. Confirm a supported AAC or MP3 output. |
| FFmpeg pauses or stops when backgrounded | Console input or missing process supervision | Use the documented -nostdin behavior or redirect standard input, and separately implement monitoring, logging and restart handling. |
| YouTube disconnects or the stream stops | Network, ingest, source, machine power or process lifecycle | Identify which part failed from YouTube status and local logs, restore the input or connection, and restart the encoder if needed. Add an explicit recovery mechanism rather than assuming the encoder will repair every failure. |
