For a documented graphical setup on a Windows PC, OBS Studio is the better-supported starting point. Its official guide covers stream keys, output settings, testing and automatic reconnect. The evidence available here does not establish that OBS is categorically more reliable or easier than FFmpeg, so this is not a proven performance ranking. For a 24/7 broadcast, whichever encoder you choose, plan for interruptions and keep a local recording if you need an archive: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
OBS vs FFmpeg: what the comparison can establish
OBS has an official, documented Windows streaming workflow with a graphical interface for selecting a service, entering a stream key and configuring output. It also provides automatic reconnect and testing guidance. The available official sources do not substantiate a current FFmpeg-on-Windows command-line setup, reconnect configuration or head-to-head resource and reliability results. That means the practical recommendation is to start with OBS if you want a documented graphical workflow—not to assume FFmpeg cannot work or that OBS guarantees better uptime.

| Question | OBS Studio | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Setup evidence | OBS documents service or custom-server selection, stream key, output settings and testing. OBS streaming setup | A current official Windows command-line workflow is not established by the sources cited here. |
| Reconnect | Automatic reconnect is available in Advanced settings. It does not prevent every cause of an outage. OBS dropped-frames troubleshooting | Reconnect behavior and configuration are not established here. |
| System load | Depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity; test your actual system. OBS system requirements | No sourced comparative benchmark is available here. |
| YouTube ingest | Configure to YouTube’s published encoder requirements. | Configure to the same YouTube requirements; the tool name alone does not guarantee a valid stream. |
| Archive strategy | The same YouTube archive limit applies whichever encoder you use: streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording if retaining the full program matters. YouTube: Archive live streams | |
What a Windows PC needs for OBS
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as basic requirements. OBS cautions that compatibility does not guarantee that a particular machine can stream at the settings you choose. Processing demand changes with encoder, output resolution, frame rate and scene complexity; 60 fps can tax a system more than 30 fps. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the intended workload rather than treating minimum requirements as a performance promise. OBS system requirements
Set up OBS for a YouTube live stream
- Prepare YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open Live Control Room. For an encoder stream, YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: YouTube describes it as working like the stream’s password and address. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
- Connect OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube when available or a custom service, and enter the stream key as appropriate. Follow YouTube’s current encoder workflow for the stream URL and key. Prefer RTMPS ingest when configuring a custom server; it encrypts the connection to YouTube. OBS streaming setup · YouTube encoder settings
- Set output and test. In OBS, open Settings > Output and choose an encoder and bitrate your PC and sustained upload can handle. Build and test the scenes, audio and motion you will actually broadcast. Check that the stream preview appears in Live Control Room and inspect stream health before going live. OBS recommends testing smoothness and settings before a live broadcast. OBS streaming setup · YouTube encoder settings
- Start the broadcast. Start streaming in OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and then use YouTube’s go-live workflow. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
- Enable reconnect and verify recovery. OBS’s automatic reconnect control is under Settings > Advanced. Test your recovery plan before leaving a stream unattended; reconnect helps with some disconnections, but it cannot prevent a power failure, Windows restart, hardware fault, encoder crash, network outage or YouTube-side issue. YouTube encoder settings: bitrate, keyframes and picture format
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, it specifies 128 kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Its guidance also specifies square pixels, progressive scan and Rec. 709 for SDR. Consult YouTube’s current settings page before configuring a production stream because platform recommendations can change. YouTube encoder settings

Make a 24/7 stream more resilient
Size the bitrate for the connection you actually have
OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate selection. That percentage is an OBS troubleshooting starting point, not a YouTube rule. A speed-test result alone does not establish that the connection can hold that rate continuously, so test the stream and reduce bitrate if dropped frames persist. OBS dropped-frames troubleshooting

Prefer wired networking when Wi-Fi is unstable
OBS recommends a wired connection when Wi-Fi is unstable. Check the Ethernet cable, network card, modem and router if interruptions continue. Wired networking is a sensible reliability measure, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. OBS dropped-frames troubleshooting
Use reconnect as one layer, not the whole plan
OBS offers Windows-specific network settings, including network optimization and TCP pacing options, and dynamic bitrate adjustment. Dynamic bitrate may reduce image quality and does not fix the underlying network cause. Check security software, VPNs, network utilities and drivers when diagnosing persistent trouble; change one setting at a time and retest. No reconnect setting can keep a single PC operating through a power cut, system restart or hardware failure. OBS dropped-frames troubleshooting

Preflight an unattended broadcast
- Run a test with similar audio, movement and scenes to the planned stream.
- Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before going live.
- Confirm that upload capacity can sustain the chosen bitrate, and watch for dropped frames.
- If recording locally, check that the file is growing and that the finished file is intact.
- If using a backup encoder, test failover in advance. YouTube advises stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable to confirm that the player rolls over to the backup.
- Monitor audio and video quality during operation rather than assuming a successful initial connection guarantees a healthy long run.
Do not rely on YouTube to archive a 24-hour broadcast
YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It warns that “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A continuous 24/7 stream therefore should not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for the complete program. Record locally if you need a complete copy, verify the recording file and check available disk space; the cited YouTube guidance does not prescribe a particular drive capacity. Common OBS streaming problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames | Unstable network or bitrate beyond sustained upload capacity. | Reduce bitrate, test again, use Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unstable, and inspect network equipment and Windows network software or drivers. |
| OBS connects but YouTube does not show the expected stream | Incorrect stream URL or key, or the scheduled-stream preview/go-live sequence is incomplete. | Check the current stream URL and key in YouTube Live Control Room, keep the key private, and follow the preview and go-live steps for a scheduled broadcast. |
| Encoding or stream becomes unstable under load | Chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate or scene complexity exceeds what the PC can sustain. | Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, simplify scenes or lower output demands, then test the actual content workload. OBS does not treat minimum compatibility as a performance guarantee. |
| Audio or video fails during a long unattended run | A successful start did not establish long-run quality; an interruption or local recording issue may go unnoticed. | Monitor stream quality, test recovery, and verify that the local recording file is growing and remains intact. |
| Stream ends after a Windows restart, power loss or hardware fault | OBS automatic reconnect addresses some disconnections, not failures that stop the PC or encoder. | Plan for those failure cases separately; a single-PC setup does not have a documented uptime guarantee. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that loops uploaded videos around the clock, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping OBS or another encoder running on a home PC. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
