Use OBS if you want to operate the broadcast from your own computer; use a cloud service if you want prerecorded videos to keep streaming without leaving a computer running at home. Both approaches can send an encoder-based broadcast to YouTube. The practical choice comes down to who runs the encoder, how you prepare and schedule the stream, what you need to monitor, and which ongoing costs and dependencies suit you.
How the two approaches differ
| Decision | OBS on your computer | Cloud service |
|---|---|---|
| Where the encoder runs | OBS runs as software on your computer, which must remain available with a working network connection during the broadcast. | The encoder runs in a hosted service. You rely on that provider’s account, supported file workflow, and current terms. |
| Control | You operate a local encoder setup directly. This gives you control over the local workflow, but also leaves its operation and monitoring to you. | The vendor’s controls and features vary. Check its current documentation for scheduling, monitoring, alerts, retries, and recovery. |
| Automation | YouTube supports scheduled broadcasts and encoder connections, but you still need to connect the encoder to the scheduled event and may need to start the event in Live Control Room. | A service may offer continuous prerecorded streaming; confirm its specific scheduling and automation features rather than assuming they are included. |
| Operational dependencies | Your computer, power, network connection, OBS setup, and operator availability. | The provider’s service and account, your uploaded files, and the provider’s supported workflow and terms. |
| Cost | Consider computer purchase and operating costs if you need a dedicated machine. No general cost figure applies. | Check current subscription, usage, storage, and cancellation terms. No general cloud-service price applies. |
| Reliability evidence | Test the complete path, including audio and motion, and plan how you will notice and respond to a problem. | Ask the provider what monitoring, retries, alerts, and recovery it offers. There is no verified head-to-head reliability result for OBS versus cloud services. |
This is a decision framework, not a measured comparison. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as an example of a cloud-based tool for continuous prerecorded-video streaming; that listing does not establish its current price, plan limits, comparative reliability, or whether it is the right fit for a particular channel. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Choose the workflow that fits your channel
Choose OBS when local operation matters
- You want to run the encoder yourself from a computer.
- You are prepared to keep that computer and its internet connection available while streaming.
- You can monitor the broadcast and handle interruptions or setup changes.
- You want a local workflow and are willing to account for the computer’s purchase and operating costs.
Choose a cloud service when you need the computer off
- You want a hosted service to run a prerecorded broadcast remotely.
- You would rather upload media and use the provider’s workflow than keep a local encoder running.
- You are comfortable depending on a third party and have checked its current file, scheduling, storage, recovery, and billing terms.
For a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube channel, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: it runs uploaded videos from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives new accounts a free first day. YouTube also lists Gyre as a cloud-based prerecorded-streaming example, but its listing alone does not verify comparative performance or commercial terms.

Set up OBS with YouTube
YouTube’s encoder flow supports either selecting YouTube in an integrated encoder or entering YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder. The stream key is a credential: do not share it, publish it, or expose it in a recording or screenshot. YouTube’s detailed instructions are in its encoder setup guide.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Check live-stream access. If this is your first time enabling live streaming, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Allow for that delay before planning a broadcast.
- Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Live Control Room, create a live stream or schedule an event. For a scheduled stream, use the event’s encoder connection details and follow the setup flow to start the event in Live Control Room if required.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. If OBS offers an integrated YouTube connection, select YouTube and follow its sign-in flow. Otherwise, copy YouTube’s stream URL into OBS’s server field and the event’s stream key into the key field. Keep the key private.
- Prepare the prerecorded material. Load the video or planned content into your OBS workflow and check that the resulting broadcast has both picture and audio. Do not assume that the format used for a local recording is automatically suitable for every streaming setup.
- Test before the real broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS and recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Confirm the full path from OBS to YouTube, including sound and moving video, rather than testing only a static screen.
- Start the encoder and verify the event. Begin sending content from OBS. YouTube says a watch page is created after the encoder begins sending content. Confirm the event is receiving the stream and follow the Live Control Room flow for going live.
- Plan the operating period. A local OBS stream depends on the computer and its network connection being available. Arrange monitoring and a response plan for a stalled encoder, lost connection, or other interruption.
For local recordings that will later be uploaded, OBS’s recording formats guide discusses recording formats and notes that fragmented MP4/MOV can suit users uploading to platforms such as YouTube. Recording format and live-stream configuration are separate workflow decisions; choose based on how you will use the file.
Plan around YouTube’s stream and content rules
Archive length
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will be archived in the same way. If you need a recording, plan separately how you will retain or publish the source video.

Rights and monetization
Make sure you have the rights needed for every video, track, image, and other material in the broadcast. Replaying prerecorded content does not remove copyright obligations. YouTube’s monetization eligibility depends on a channel’s program status; streaming alone does not qualify a channel for monetization, and a 24/7 schedule does not guarantee views, engagement, or revenue.
Keep the stream key secure
Treat the key as a password for sending a stream to your channel. Use only the intended encoder or service, avoid exposing the key publicly, and follow YouTube’s account controls if you need to replace it.
