Yes. OBS’s VLC Video source can display subtitles from a video’s subtitle track: add the source, enable Subtitles Enabled, and select the track you want under Subtitle Track. Subtitles rendered this way are part of the video image sent to YouTube; they are not YouTube’s viewer-selectable closed captions.
Enable subtitles in an OBS VLC Video source

Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.

Add the video files or playlist to the source.

Turn on
Subtitles Enabled. -
Choose the desired entry in
Subtitle Track. OBS documents track 1 as the default, but track numbering and language placement can vary by file. Check the available tracks rather than assuming a particular number means a particular language.#1 Best Overall

Preview the actual media. Confirm that the intended language appears, subtitle timing matches the audio, and the result is legible in the stream composition.
OBS’s documented controls and defaults are described in its Media Sources guide (dated January 11, 2022). The guide does not establish universal support or track-number behavior for every subtitle format, container, or file. Test the exact media in your current OBS setup before broadcasting.
Burned-in subtitles or YouTube closed captions?
VLC-source subtitles are drawn into the outgoing video. Viewers see them as part of the picture and cannot switch that subtitle track off in YouTube. If viewers need to toggle captions, the caption data must be delivered to YouTube separately. YouTube Help states: “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.”

YouTube lists caption software, including StreamText.Net, as one possible route to live captions. Check the current YouTube instructions and the provider’s current details before choosing a workflow; the caption documentation does not establish current partner terms.

Check playlist looping and source visibility
A playlist can cycle, but that setting alone does not make an OBS broadcast reliably continuous. OBS lists Loop Playlist as on by default. Its default Visibility Behaviour is “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” Check these settings in the VLC Video source and test what happens when the playlist reaches its end. If the source may become hidden during a scene change, verify that its visibility behavior matches your plan.
OBS source order also affects overlays: sources higher in the list appear above lower sources and can cover them. If you use a Text source for a separate overlay, arrange it so it does not obscure the video or subtitle track.

Playlist looping is a playback behavior, not an uptime guarantee. OBS recommends previewing and monitoring audio and video quality during an encoder stream. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; treat that as a boundary for planning, not a promise about how a particular account or ongoing 24/7 event will behave. Check the actual event and archive in YouTube Studio for your channel.

Troubleshooting subtitle and playback problems

The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC and restart or reopen OBS. For 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC.

No subtitles appear: Confirm

The wrong language appears: Try the other available subtitle tracks and preview each one. OBS’s guide does not define a universal mapping between track numbers and languages.

Subtitles appear but are out of sync or unreadable: Test the exact file and track in OBS before the live session. The documented controls do not guarantee identical behavior across formats and files.

The playlist stops or does not restart as expected: Check
Loop Playlist, inspectVisibility Behaviour, and test the end of the playlist and any scene changes. -
Viewers cannot turn subtitles off: That is expected for VLC-source subtitles because they are composited into the video. Use a separate YouTube live-caption workflow if selectable captions are required.

The stream or archive does not behave as expected: Monitor the encoder preview and confirm the event status and archive in YouTube Studio. OBS playlist looping does not establish uninterrupted streaming, and YouTube’s under-12-hour archive rule does not specify every account’s behavior for a continuous event.
