OBS Studio vs XSplit for Looping Pre-Recorded Videos on YouTube Live

OBS and XSplit both support prerecorded video workflows for YouTube Live. Compare their loop and playlist controls, setup steps, and practical trade-offs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Both OBS Studio and XSplit Broadcaster can send a looping pre-recorded video to YouTube Live. OBS can loop one local file with its built-in Media Source; for a playlist, it offers a VLC-based source. XSplit supports local video sources and a Video Playlist with continuous playback and looping effects. Neither product is established as more reliable in a controlled comparison, so choose based on your workflow and test your actual files before a broadcast.

OBS vs XSplit at a glance

How to loop one video in OBS and stream it to YouTube

  1. Check channel eligibility. Verify the channel and enable live streaming in YouTube. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours; YouTube also requires no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check YouTube Studio before scheduling because platform requirements can change. See YouTube’s getting-started guidance.
  2. Add the file in OBS. In a scene, add a Media Source and select the local video file. Turn on Loop so playback restarts when the file finishes. OBS documents this setting on its Media Sources page.
  3. Connect OBS to the YouTube event. Create or open the live event in YouTube Studio and connect the encoder using YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Treat the stream key as a credential: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Keep it private and reset it if compromised. See Manage live stream settings.
  4. Check preview, then rehearse. Set up ahead of time, inspect YouTube’s preview, and monitor audio and video during the stream. Test with the intended file and visibility setting; confirm the stream is accessible and check that sound and picture remain correct at the loop boundary. YouTube’s guidance is at YouTube live streaming tips and Streaming tips.

How to stream a playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. Match the application architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  2. Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and create a playlist from your local files. The Loop Playlist option is on by default; confirm it is enabled for the intended behavior.
  3. Check playback and output. Rehearse the playlist in the YouTube preview, paying attention to audio, transitions between files, and the point where the playlist cycles back to its first item. Then monitor the live output.

These source details are documented in OBS Media Sources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to loop video with XSplit

  1. For one file, add a Video File source. Select the local media and use the source’s playback controls. XSplit’s documentation covers video and audio sources at Image, Video, and Audio Source.
  2. For multiple files, create a Video Playlist. Choose Add Source > Scene Widgets > Video Playlist and add the files. XSplit describes continuous playback and looping effects for this playlist source; consult its playlist instructions for the available controls.
  3. Connect to YouTube and rehearse. Use XSplit’s supported-site information and YouTube’s encoder setup guidance to configure the output. Preview the event and verify the playlist cycle, transitions, and audio before relying on it for a scheduled stream. XSplit lists YouTube Live among its supported sites at Supported Streaming Sites.

Which should you choose for a 24/7 stream?

Choose OBS if the built-in single-file loop suits your plan or you already use OBS and are comfortable installing VLC for a playlist. Choose XSplit if its video-source and playlist workflow fits the way you want to arrange files and playback. The documentation establishes these controls, not a general winner for ease, stability, or performance; those depend on your computer, files, and configuration. Run a rehearsal with the actual playlist and machine before committing to a long broadcast.

YouTube’s encoder directory also lists cloud services for unattended prerecorded streams; being listed is not a performance endorsement. If you want to avoid leaving a home computer on, consider a cloud option instead.

YouTube eligibility, copyright, and reused content

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days; first-time live activation may take up to 24 hours. Requirements can change, so check Studio before the planned broadcast. See Get started with live streaming and encoder setup.

Live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube identifies active copyright strikes and matches to another copyrighted live broadcast among grounds for live-stream restrictions. The cited policy does not say that looping prerecorded video is categorically disallowed. Make sure you have the rights to both video and audio you broadcast, and review YouTube’s live-stream restriction guidance. Reusing a file does not, by itself, establish that you have permission to stream it.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • OBS playlist source is missing or will not load: check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS (64-bit with 64-bit OBS).
  • The video stops instead of looping in OBS: open the Media Source properties and enable Loop for a single file; for a playlist, check Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source.
  • XSplit playlist does not continue as expected: confirm you used the Video Playlist source and review its continuous-playback and looping controls, rather than assuming a Video File source has the same playlist behavior.
  • YouTube does not accept the feed: check the event and encoder configuration against YouTube’s setup guidance, and ensure the stream key is current and has not been exposed. Reset a compromised key.
  • First live stream is unavailable when planned: activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it in advance and confirm the channel meets eligibility requirements.
  • Audio or picture fails at a file boundary: test the actual loop or playlist transition in preview, then monitor the live stream as YouTube recommends. A rehearsal can reveal file-specific issues before a scheduled broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube stream made from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts.
