OBS Studio on Linux: Settings for a 24/7 YouTube Playlist Stream

Configure OBS on Linux for a looping YouTube playlist: choose VLC Video Source, match encoder settings to YouTube’s recommendations, and test stream health.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Linux-based OBS playlist stream, use a VLC Video Source with Loop Playlist enabled, then set OBS’s encoder to match YouTube’s recommended ingest settings for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. A 24/7 stream also needs a stable upload connection and monitoring: looping the playlist does not guarantee that OBS, the network, or the YouTube stream will stay connected.

Set up the playlist source in OBS on Linux

Use VLC Video Source for multiple files

  1. Install VLC for Linux, matching the architecture of OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. OBS requires VLC to be available for VLC Video Source to appear as an option.
  2. In your OBS scene, add a VLC Video Source and add the media files you want in the playlist.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist in the source properties so OBS repeats the list when it reaches the end.
  4. Play through representative files before going live. VLC-backed playback supports extended media through VLC libraries, but whether a particular file works depends on its codecs, container, and installed playback stack.

OBS lists common Media Source video formats such as MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Those listed formats are not a guarantee that every file will decode correctly on every Linux installation. See OBS’s media sources documentation.

Use Media Source for one repeating file

If the stream consists of one file rather than a playlist, add an ordinary Media Source and enable its Loop control. VLC Video Source is the playlist option; Media Source is the simpler choice for a single repeating file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check scene visibility behavior

OBS documents VLC Video Source’s default Visibility Behaviour as stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting it when visible. If your stream changes scenes, review this setting: a playlist may pause or restart when its scene becomes hidden, depending on the behavior selected. This matters even if the playlist itself is set to loop.

Choose YouTube encoder settings for RTMPS

For standard RTMP-style ingest, YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to its servers. In OBS, select settings that match the actual resolution, frame rate, and video codec you plan to send. Use constant bitrate (CBR), set a 2-second keyframe interval, and use Rec. 709 for SDR. YouTube says the keyframe interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Available video codecs in YouTube’s live encoder guidance include H.264, H.265, and AV1; audio can use AAC or MP3. For exact settings by codec and stream configuration, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings.

YouTube’s H.264 recommended bitrate examples

The figures below are YouTube Help’s recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates. They are configuration recommendations, not a promise that a particular Linux computer or internet connection can sustain them. YouTube provides separate tables for H.265 and AV1, so match the table to the codec you actually select.

1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 21 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 34 Mbps

Leave upload headroom rather than running at the connection’s measured maximum. A bitrate that is too high for the available upload capacity can cause unstable delivery; one that does not match the intended resolution and frame rate may reduce the quality viewers receive. YouTube recommends checking upload capacity and testing before the stream.

Do not mix up RTMPS and HLS settings

RTMPS and HLS are different output setups. The CBR and keyframe guidance above applies to the standard RTMP-style workflow; HLS has separate segment and transport requirements. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies 1–4 second segments, TS segment format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output. Do not copy HLS segment settings into an ordinary RTMPS setup. HLS also has higher latency than the standard RTMP-style option. See YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.

Test and monitor before relying on a long stream

  1. Test the complete playlist with representative motion and audio, not only a still frame or a short opening clip.
  2. Confirm the Linux upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate with headroom.
  3. Start a test stream and check that YouTube’s Live Control Room receives the expected picture and sound.
  4. During the live stream, watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages, and respond to warnings rather than assuming a looped source means the stream is healthy.

YouTube Help puts the practical point plainly: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube transcodes incoming streams into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need to deliver a stable, correctly configured source stream. OBS playlist looping alone does not establish uninterrupted 24/7 uptime, and no uptime guarantee follows from these settings. For background, see YouTube’s guide to streaming with encoders.

Common problems and what to check

  • VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Then check whether VLC appears as a source option.
  • The playlist stops at the last item: Reopen the VLC Video Source properties and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled.
  • Playback stops or restarts after a scene change: Review the source’s Visibility Behaviour. OBS’s documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible.
  • A file shows a black screen, has no sound, or fails to play: Test that exact file in the configured source. A familiar extension does not ensure compatibility; codec, container, and the installed playback stack all matter.
  • YouTube reports unstable stream health: Check whether your upload can sustain the selected bitrate, confirm the chosen codec and resolution/frame-rate row match, and test again with headroom. Review YouTube’s health messages while live.
  • The stream works but has more delay than expected: Confirm whether the output is HLS. Its segment configuration is separate from RTMPS and YouTube describes HLS as higher latency.
