Neither setting guarantees that an animated story stream will return live: the app may need a signed-in desktop, authentication, a selected scene, or a working network connection. Use active hours to reduce interruptions, configure an app-appropriate relaunch method, and test the full restart-and-recovery chain on the streaming PC.
What Windows settings can—and cannot—do
Some updates require a restart to finish installing. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ says, “To finish installing an update, your device will need to restart.” Active hours can help prevent routine restarts at inconvenient times, but they do not prevent every restart or provide a permanent way to avoid updates.

Relaunching the app is a separate problem from avoiding a restart. Startup apps and Startup-folder shortcuts launch programs when a user signs in. Task Scheduler offers more trigger and retry options, but Windows’ launch features do not establish that a particular animation or streaming application can restore its previous project, authenticate, or reconnect to a live endpoint.
Reduce disruptive update restarts
Set active hours
- Windows 11: Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours. Choose automatic adjustment or set the hours that match when the PC needs to be available.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Change active hours.
Active hours help Windows avoid restarting while you are using the device. They are a scheduling measure, not a 24/7 uptime guarantee. The Microsoft active-hours guidance explains the setting for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Schedule or temporarily pause updates when needed
Windows Update also lets you schedule a restart when that option is available, and Windows Update settings can temporarily pause updates. Use these to move a planned restart away from a critical broadcast period—not as a permanent substitute for maintaining the PC. See Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ for the applicable options.
Choose a way to relaunch the streaming app
Use Startup apps for a simple launch at user sign-in. Use Task Scheduler when you need a different trigger or want Windows to retry a failed task. Either approach depends on what the streaming software supports and how it handles the logged-in session.

Option 1: Enable startup at sign-in
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Turn on the entry for your streaming or animation app, if it is listed.
- If it is not listed, check the app’s own startup setting. Microsoft also documents adding a shortcut to the current-user Startup folder by opening Run and entering
shell:startup, or to the all-users Startup folder withshell:common startup. Add only a shortcut the app vendor supports. - Restart the PC and confirm the expected user signs in and the app opens. Check the actual stream; an app window opening does not prove that video is live.

Option 2: Configure a Task Scheduler task
- Open Task Scheduler and create a task using a trigger that matches the app’s requirements, such as a system-start trigger or a user-logon trigger.
- For the action, use the application executable and arguments recommended by its vendor. Do not assume a generic command, hidden mode, elevated privileges, or saved credentials will work safely for every app.
- Where appropriate, review the task settings for
StartWhenAvailableandRestartOnFailure. Microsoft’s schema requires both a retry count and an interval for restart-on-failure: RestartOnFailure settings. - Save the task, then test it by running it manually and by restarting the PC. Verify the stream output, not only the task’s status.

Do not mistake WakeToRun for reboot recovery
The WakeToRun option is for waking a sleeping computer to run a scheduled task. It does not recover a stream after an update restart, and Microsoft notes the display may remain off when the computer wakes. That matters if your app needs a visible desktop. See Microsoft’s WakeToRun documentation.
Test the full unattended recovery chain
Windows documentation describes how to launch a program; it does not verify that your particular animation and streaming apps restore a live broadcast. Test on the PC and with the account you intend to use:

- Install updates and restart the PC. Confirm whether it signs in automatically or stops at a sign-in screen.
- Check that the correct account and desktop session are available if the app needs one.
- Verify the app opens the intended story, project, scene, or playlist and that authentication has not expired.
- Confirm audio and video output, network reconnection, and the live status at the streaming destination.
- Separately close or stop the app and check whether your chosen startup or scheduled-task setup relaunches it. A restart test alone does not establish recovery from an ordinary app crash.
If the software asks for a password, a confirmation dialog, or manual scene selection after restart, Windows’ launch mechanism alone cannot complete that recovery. Consult the application vendor’s instructions before automating credentials or changing security settings.

As of Microsoft’s 2025 support notice, Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Check the Microsoft active-hours page for that support status and use Microsoft’s guidance to determine what applies to your device.

Microsoft also described a gradual rollout of monthly restart consolidation for eligible Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1. Its August 14, 2026 explanation says releases on and after July 28, 2026 combine some restart-requiring driver, .NET, and firmware updates with the monthly security update. The policy is not universal: rollout is gradual, some urgent updates are exceptions, and delayed updates will not be held indefinitely. Details are in Microsoft’s “One restart a month for Windows updates”.
Common problems and fixes
- The PC restarted, but the app did not open: Check that the startup entry or task is enabled and that the account actually signed in. A sign-in-triggered app will not launch at the desktop if Windows is waiting at the sign-in screen.
- The app opened but the stream is offline: Check authentication, the selected project or scene, network connectivity, and the app’s reconnect behavior. Windows starting the program does not establish that the stream endpoint accepted a connection.
- The task says it ran, but no visible app appeared: Review its trigger and whether it runs in a user context that can display a window. Test with the intended account and desktop session; avoid assuming a background task can operate a visible interface.
- The task failed and did not retry: Review the task’s failure settings and confirm both retry count and interval are configured for
RestartOnFailure. Then test a controlled app exit. - The PC woke but the screen stayed dark: This can be consistent with
WakeToRun; it is not proof of a visible stream recovery. Use a method suited to the app’s desktop-session requirements. - Updates still interrupt the stream: Recheck active hours and any available restart schedule, but plan for required or exceptional restarts and test recovery rather than relying on update timing alone.
