OBS cannot keep streaming when the computer running it goes to sleep or shuts down. On Windows 11, set the plugged-in sleep timeout to Never under Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. You can still set the screen to turn off separately; the PC must stay awake, online, and running OBS.
Keep Windows awake while OBS streams
OBS encodes and sends the stream from the computer on which it is running. When that computer sleeps, the local encoder stops working. OBS Project forum guidance likewise says the PC must be fully on to stream (OBS Project Forums).

Set the Windows 11 sleep timeout
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Under When plugged in, set the sleep timeout to Never for a continuous stream. The exact label can vary by Windows version and device.
- Optionally set a separate screen-off timeout. The display can turn off while the computer remains awake; do not set the computer to sleep if OBS must continue streaming.
- Leave OBS open and streaming, and keep the computer powered and connected to the internet.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 documentation covers the separate screen and sleep timeouts: Power settings in Windows 11. Its described controls are for Windows 11; older Windows versions use different menus.

Know what this setting fixes—and what it does not
- Sleep: suspends the computer’s work, stopping the local OBS encoder. Preventing sleep addresses this cause of interruption.
- Screen off: turns off the display without necessarily putting the computer to sleep. Its timeout can be shorter than the sleep timeout.
- YouTube auto-start and auto-stop: these affect broadcast behavior when encoder streaming starts or stops; they do not keep Windows awake. Review them if the broadcast begins or ends in connection with OBS starting or stopping. See YouTube’s live stream settings and the OBS community guide to streaming to YouTube.
- Network or bitrate problems: a stream can drop frames or disconnect even while the PC is awake. OBS identifies an unstable connection or insufficient ability to sustain the configured bitrate as possible causes. Check OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
If the stream stops with the PC awake
- Confirm the computer has not slept, restarted, or shut down, and that OBS is still open and streaming.
- Check OBS stream health and whether the connection is stable.
- Check whether the available upload connection can sustain the bitrate configured for the stream; use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance for dropped frames or intermittent disconnections.
- If the encoder’s start or stop behavior is ending the YouTube broadcast, review YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. Those controls do not prevent sleep.
Disabling sleep only addresses one failure mode. A power cut, network failure, operating-system restart, OBS crash, or source failure can still interrupt long-duration operation; continuous streaming is not guaranteed by this setting.
