For automatic screenshots during a Selenium run, enable BrowserStack Automate’s Visual Logs with the debug capability. For an image file at a specific checkpoint, call Selenium’s screenshot method in your test and save it on the machine running the test. Visual Logs appear in the Automate dashboard; runner-created screenshots must be retained by your CI job if you need them after the run.
Choose automatic logs or an explicit screenshot
| Need | Use | Where the result goes |
|---|---|---|
| Review screenshots taken as Selenium commands execute | BrowserStack Visual Logs, enabled with debug |
Automate dashboard |
| Capture a particular page state or create a CI image artifact | Selenium screenshot method in test code | File on the test runner; CI must preserve it |
BrowserStack documents both methods in its Visual Logs guide. Visual Logs are useful for seeing page state around commands, but they are not downloaded automatically as files to your test machine.
Enable automatic screenshots with Visual Logs
Visual Logs are disabled by default. Set the debug capability to true in the capability format used by your integration. With W3C capabilities, BrowserStack places it inside bstack:options:
capabilities = {
"browserName": "Chrome",
"bstack:options": {
"debug": "true",
"os": "Windows",
"osVersion": "11"
}
}
For a legacy capability format, BrowserStack documents the key as browserstack.debug:

Use the capability structure appropriate to the Selenium integration rather than setting both forms indiscriminately. After the run, locate the relevant Automate build or session in the dashboard and inspect its available Visual Logs and session evidence. Dashboard labels can change, so use the session or build identity rather than relying on a particular tab name.
BrowserStack notes that Visual Logs are not supported on its macOS Snow Leopard and Lion computers. Check the live documentation for your target browser and operating system before relying on a particular log type.

Save a screenshot file at a deliberate checkpoint
When you need an image of a specific state, wait until the page is ready and call the active WebDriver’s screenshot method. For Python Selenium:
from pathlib import Path
Path("artifacts").mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
saved = driver.save_screenshot("artifacts/page-state.png")
if not saved:
raise RuntimeError("WebDriver did not save the screenshot")
The file is written on the machine running the test, not automatically into the BrowserStack dashboard. In CI, configure the job to upload or otherwise retain artifacts/page-state.png before the runner is shut down. BrowserStack’s Python example uses driver.save_screenshot("screenshots.png"); other Selenium bindings provide their own syntax for requesting and saving the active driver’s screenshot.

Inspect session evidence without confusing its types
Use the Automate dashboard’s build and session results to identify the run and inspect available logs, screenshots, and video. BrowserStack also documents retrieving build or session data and associated logs through its REST APIs. For settings and availability, consult the capabilities reference for the browser and operating system you are targeting.
- Visual Logs: screenshots associated with Selenium command execution, available in the dashboard when enabled.
- Explicit screenshot: a file produced by your test at the checkpoint you choose.
- Video: a session recording, separate from an image file. BrowserStack says video is enabled by default and adds a slight execution-time increase.
- Selenium logs: command-related log evidence, not a screenshot.
BrowserStack’s capability reference lists debug as false by default, video as true, and seleniumLogs as true. It lists networkLogs as false by default and notes browser or platform exceptions for some log types. Console log levels and availability also vary with browser support; verify the target combination in the live reference.

Troubleshoot missing or unusable screenshots
No Visual Logs appear
- Confirm the capability is set to
trueand uses the correct format:bstack:options.debugfor W3C capabilities orbrowserstack.debugfor legacy capabilities. - Check the correct Automate build or session in the dashboard.
- Check whether the target OS is one of the documented unsupported systems, including macOS Snow Leopard and Lion.
The explicit screenshot file is missing from CI
- Check the path relative to the test runner’s working directory and ensure the destination directory exists.
- Confirm the screenshot call ran and inspect its return value or the Selenium exception.
- Configure CI to collect the file before job teardown; a runner-local file is not retained automatically.
The screenshot shows the wrong page state
Take the screenshot only after the test has reached the intended state. Wait for a meaningful page condition, such as a visible element, rather than relying only on a fixed pause when the page load is variable.
A log type is unavailable for the target browser
Capabilities can have browser and platform-specific exceptions. Check the live capability documentation for that exact target, and use an explicit screenshot call when the required evidence is a saved image at a known point in the test.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
