Choose a codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your encoder hardware and sustained upload connection can handle; YouTube’s recommendations are starting points, not a guarantee of quality or uninterrupted streaming. Test the entire playback loop before going public, leave upload headroom, and record locally if you need a dependable replay. Most importantly, YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Recommended OBS settings for a long YouTube stream
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, applies to live ingestion—not to uploading a video. It supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval; the interval must not exceed 4 seconds. Choose settings OBS and your hardware actually support. OBS labels and available encoders can vary by version and computer.

| Setting | Starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Server/protocol | YouTube’s RTMPS server URL | Copy the server URL shown for your event in YouTube Studio; do not substitute an upload URL. |
| Encoder | H.264, HEVC, or AV1 if supported | Use a compatible hardware encoder if available, or a software encoder your computer can sustain. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations differ by codec. |
| Rate control | CBR | Set the streaming rate control to constant bitrate when that control is available. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and specifies a maximum interval of 4 seconds. |
| Resolution and frame rate | Match the source and your available upload capacity | Do not upscale low-resolution footage just to select a larger output. YouTube’s RTMP(S) guidance allows up to 60 fps. |
For H.264, YouTube’s live table recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. For 1080p at 60 fps, it lists 6 Mbps as the minimum and 17 Mbps as the recommendation. For 720p at 60 fps, it lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube Help ingestion figures, not OBS-specific presets or promises about the picture viewers will see. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings for other codecs and formats.
Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the outgoing bitrate; allow for both feeds if you configure a primary and backup feed. That margin is a recommendation, not a measured success rate. Test upload capacity under the conditions you will actually stream in: other people and devices using the same connection can reduce the capacity available to OBS. A stable, lower-bitrate stream is a better choice than a higher target that repeatedly drops frames.

Set up YouTube Studio and connect OBS
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction within the past 90 days. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule one, then open its stream settings. YouTube provides the server URL and stream key there; the precise Studio labels can change. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube or the matching service option available in your OBS version, and enter the server URL and stream key. If OBS offers a direct account connection, use the workflow appropriate to your setup; do not expose or paste your key in a public place.
- Set the encoder output. In Settings > Output, select the streaming encoder and configure the supported codec, CBR, bitrate, and 2-second keyframe interval. In Settings > Video, choose an output resolution and frame rate that match the source and your computer’s sustained encoding ability. OBS versions and hardware expose different controls, so confirm the resulting stream settings in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- Build and test the playback scene. Add the prerecorded file as a media source. If the source’s properties offer a loop option and you want it to repeat, enable it; verify how it behaves at the end of the file and during transitions. Check that audio is audible, not clipped, and does not disappear between repeats. There is no single universal OBS loop configuration for every file, scene, and machine.
- Start a private or unlisted test before the public event. Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the event public. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned content. Watch for dropped frames, encoding overload, missing audio, and unexpected pauses or black frames.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes the key as a password-like credential used to direct and authenticate the encoder feed. Reset it in YouTube Studio if you think it has been exposed; see manage live stream settings.
Prepare for an all-day session
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but cautions: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Do not rely on a 24-hour broadcast appearing in full as a YouTube replay. If the recording matters, enable OBS local recording, make sure the destination has enough free space for the chosen recording format and duration, and check that the file is growing and playable. YouTube also recommends a local archive as backup. Read its archive live streams guidance.
Monitor the computer, connection, and event
- Watch OBS’s dropped-frame and encoding indicators as well as YouTube’s stream-health status; they can point to different problems.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and the public watch page for picture, sound, and playback continuity.
- Keep an eye on local recording progress and available disk space. A stream that continues while recording has stopped will not give you the backup you intended.
- Use a stable power and network setup, and avoid relying on a computer or connection you have not tested for a long run. YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee that consumer hardware or internet service will stay up indefinitely.
- When the event is over, end the stream in YouTube Studio and stop OBS; confirm the local recording has finalized before closing the application.
Copyright, policy, and monetization still apply
Prerecorded material is still streamed content. YouTube’s livestream terms require compliance with its Community Guidelines and that the provider have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation, including music rights. Use material you own or are licensed to stream; a video being prerecorded does not remove rights obligations. Read YouTube’s livestream terms.

YouTube describes monetization controls for eligible channels, but that does not establish that a particular channel or repetitive 24/7 format qualifies. Do not assume a loop is approved for monetization—or categorically prohibited—without checking the applicable YouTube rules and the status of your channel. The available setup guidance does not decide eligibility for an individual stream.

| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS connects, but YouTube shows no incoming video | Server URL, stream key, or event setup | Confirm OBS is using the URL and key for the correct Studio event. Re-enter the key privately if needed; reset it if it may have been exposed. |
| Stream health reports unstable connection or dropped frames | Insufficient or inconsistent upload capacity | Check actual upload performance while the connection is in use, reduce bitrate or output demands, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
| Video stutters while the connection appears stable | Encoding load or unsupported settings | Check OBS encoding indicators, choose a compatible encoder, or reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate. Test the adjusted configuration before a public long session. |
| Audio is missing, clipped, or breaks at the loop point | Source audio, OBS mixer, or media-source behavior | Check the source’s audio track and OBS mixer levels, then play through the full file and its repeat point during a test. |
| The YouTube replay is incomplete or absent after a very long broadcast | Session exceeded YouTube’s archive guidance | For a stream longer than 12 hours, YouTube says capture is not assured. Use and verify a local recording when a complete archive matters. |
