The best starting point is to measure the stable upload speed where you will stream, reserve about 20% for network headroom, and choose a resolution and bitrate that fit what remains. Then test the complete setup and watch both OBS and YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
Start with upload speed, not your BSNL plan’s download figure
Streaming sends video from your computer to YouTube, so the relevant number is upload speed. A plan headline or speed test showing a high download rate does not establish how much upstream bandwidth is available to your stream.

Measure upload on the actual BSNL connection, at the location and time you intend to stream. If possible, connect the streaming computer to the router or ONT by Ethernet and test while normal household devices are using the connection. Use repeated, representative results rather than a single peak reading. Leave room for other traffic and for ordinary variation in the route to YouTube’s ingest server.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused. As a practical ceiling, keep the stream’s total bitrate—video plus audio—at or below roughly 80% of stable upload. If results fluctuate, start lower. OBS’s separate rule of thumb is to begin around 75% of total upload speed when diagnosing dropped frames; it is a starting point, not a guarantee of stability.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
For example, if repeated tests show a stable 5 Mbps upload available to the stream, YouTube’s 20% headroom guidance gives a total bitrate ceiling of about 4 Mbps. This is an arithmetic example, not a claim about BSNL speeds, and it cannot guarantee a stable connection to YouTube.
Choose a resolution and bitrate that fit the line
YouTube’s H.264 live-streaming recommendations provide ranges, not minimum BSNL plan speeds. A profile is viable only if its total bitrate fits your stable upload budget with headroom.
| Output profile | YouTube H.264 video bitrate recommendation | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3–8 Mbps | A reasonable lower-resolution profile to test when 1080p is not stable; use a bitrate within the recommendation only if the measured upload budget permits it. |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3–8 Mbps | More frames can suit motion, but do not select 60 fps if the stable upload budget cannot support the chosen total bitrate. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps | Use only when measured upload leaves enough room for the video bitrate, audio and headroom. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps | The highest listed bitrate range here; a variable or limited upstream connection may call for a lower profile. |
The ranges above are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not proof that a particular BSNL connection can sustain them. For a long stream, a stable lower-resolution picture is more useful than a higher-quality setting that repeatedly loses frames.

Set the core OBS streaming options
OBS labels can vary by version. If your OBS installation exposes separate streaming controls, switch to Output Mode: Advanced to set them directly. Apply these settings as a starting profile, then tune the bitrate to your measured upload budget.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Video encoder: H.264 for the broadly compatible SDR profile covered here.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Video bitrate: choose a value that keeps total stream bitrate within the upload budget described above. Do not copy a recommendation range without checking your line.
- Resolution and frame rate: use progressive video at the intended frame rate. Choose the output resolution and frame rate based on stable upload, motion needs and test results.
- SDR colour: Rec. 709 colour space and 8-bit colour.
- Audio: AAC; YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo.
In OBS, configure the YouTube service and select the intended ingest server if the service offers a server choice. Connect OBS using your YouTube stream key, which is managed in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a recording or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube before streaming again.
Keep the selected YouTube stream key associated with the correct scheduled or ongoing live stream. Confirm that the Live Control Room detects the incoming feed before relying on it for a long broadcast.

Test the full stream before leaving it running
- Connect the real setup. Use the computer, network connection, OBS scene, audio sources and YouTube ingest route you plan to use. Ethernet removes Wi-Fi as one possible source of local variability, but it cannot increase the upstream capacity supplied by BSNL.
- Start a private or unlisted test stream. Use YouTube Live Control Room and confirm it receives the stream. Avoid testing only a static scene: include motion, audio and the kinds of changes your real broadcast will contain.
- Run the test under representative network conditions. A speed test alone cannot show that the complete path to YouTube will remain stable. Include ordinary household network use where practical.
- Watch stream health and OBS statistics. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and OBS’s dropped-frame counter during the test. YouTube’s transcoding creates playback options for viewers; it does not repair an unstable incoming feed.
- Adjust and repeat. If OBS reports network-dropped frames, lower the video bitrate and run another representative test. Do not raise the setting again until the lower profile is stable under the conditions you expect.
Troubleshoot dropped frames, buffering and interruptions
OBS’s dropped-frame counter is increasing
OBS attributes dropped frames generally to an unstable connection to the remote server or an inability to keep up with the set bitrate. Lower the video bitrate first, then repeat the test. If the selected YouTube ingest server appears unstable, try another available server and compare results.
Check whether a VPN, firewall or security application, or bundled network software is interfering with OBS. Diagnose cautiously: restore protections after testing, and use an application exception where appropriate rather than leaving security software disabled.
OBS also offers Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion under Settings > Advanced > Network. It can lower bitrate instead of dropping frames, but it does not fix the underlying connection and may reduce image quality. Treat it as a fallback rather than a replacement for an appropriate bitrate and stable upload.

OBS shows no dropped frames, but viewers report buffering
Buffering can occur on the viewer’s side even when OBS reports no dropped frames. Lowering the bitrate may make playback more accessible to viewers with constrained connections, but first distinguish viewer-side buffering from an unstable incoming feed by checking OBS statistics and YouTube stream health.
The stream stops or the image stutters without a clear network diagnosis
Check OBS statistics and system load to distinguish encoding or system-performance problems from network drops. The available guidance does not establish a particular hardware requirement for this setup, so do not assume a new PC or encoder is the fix without identifying an encoding bottleneck.
If local power interruptions are a concern, a UPS for the router or ONT—and, if needed, the streaming computer—may keep that equipment powered. Choose capacity and runtime for the connected devices. A UPS cannot prevent a provider-side outage or guarantee an uninterrupted stream.

What BSNL plan information can—and cannot—tell you
BSNL offers multiple broadband services, and availability and plans vary by circle. The Chennai Telephones FTTH plan sheet updated 2025-10-01 labels its listed rates as download speeds and includes post-FUP examples; it does not establish an individual subscriber’s upload speed or a nationwide upstream commitment. Check your own current plan and measure sustained upload at the streaming location rather than inferring upload from a download headline.
BSNL’s published Wi-Fi terms mention possible interruptions from technical, network, power or maintenance issues and do not warrant uninterrupted service. Those terms concern Wi-Fi service; they should not be read as conditions governing every Bharat Fiber plan.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded video live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a different route from running OBS on a home connection: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home internet do not have to stay on. It streams to YouTube, not from a live camera.
