OBS Settings for a Low-Power Mini PC Running a 24/7 YouTube Stream

A practical OBS starting setup for continuous YouTube streaming on a mini PC, with YouTube bitrate values, testing advice, and a cloud alternative for prerecorded loops.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with a simple OBS setup and test it on the actual mini PC: for H.264, use 720p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps if that quality is sufficient, or 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps if your connection can sustain it. Set rate control to CBR and keyframes to 2 seconds. Prefer a supported hardware encoder, Ethernet, and a stream bitrate that leaves upload headroom. These are starting points, not a guarantee that an unspecified mini PC can stay live continuously.

Recommended OBS starting settings

For a low-power PC, avoid asking the encoder, graphics processor, and internet connection to do more than the content requires. Begin at 720p30, then move to 1080p30 or 60 fps only if the mini PC and connection handle a realistic test cleanly.

Setting Starting point Why it matters
Video resolution and frame rate 1280×720 at 30 fps A sensible initial output when 720p is adequate; it generally demands less processing and bandwidth than higher-resolution or higher-frame-rate output.
Video encoder Use a supported hardware encoder if available; otherwise test software encoding at a load the CPU can sustain. Hardware encoding can move work off the CPU, but availability and quality vary by device and encoder generation.
Rate control CBR YouTube lists constant bitrate as the recommended rate-control mode for RTMP/RTMPS.
Bitrate Match the codec, resolution, and frame rate to YouTube’s table below. The recommended bitrate is higher than the minimum; do not mistake a minimum for the recommended setting.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Audio Stereo AAC, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz These are YouTube’s listed recommended advanced audio settings; allow for audio in the total bitrate budget.
Network Wired Ethernet where possible; leave 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. Capacity and stability both affect stream continuity.

YouTube also recommends progressive scan, square pixels, and two B-frames for RTMP/RTMPS. Its encoder settings list RTMP and RTMPS and support H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for standard SDR streams; use a codec supported by both your workflow and hardware. YouTube recommends RTMPS. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose bitrate for the exact output

The values below are YouTube’s listed minimum and recommended rates. They are bitrate values for the video output; include audio in your overall upload budget.

Use the row for the codec and output OBS is actually sending. If your connection cannot sustain YouTube’s recommended rate with the required headroom, reduce output demands or improve the connection rather than setting a bitrate that repeatedly saturates it. For a mostly static image or slow-moving content, 30 fps may be a practical choice; 60 fps can make motion smoother but raises processing and network demands.

Set up OBS on the mini PC

  1. Check what the system can encode. In OBS, open Tools → Auto Configuration Wizard for a starting recommendation. Verify whether OBS offers a hardware encoder for your device and chosen codec. Capabilities vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
  2. Keep the scene simple. Use only the sources, filters, transitions, and animated elements the stream needs. Scene compositing uses GPU resources; remove unnecessary effects if OBS struggles to keep up.
  3. Set the output format and bitrate. In OBS, open Settings → Output, select the streaming encoder and CBR where available, then choose a bitrate from the table that matches your codec and output. OBS labels can differ by version and encoder.
  4. Set video dimensions and frame rate. In Settings → Video, begin with 1280×720 and 30 fps if appropriate for the content. Use a 16:9 canvas/output when that matches your source; avoid unnecessary scaling. Raise resolution or frame rate only after testing.
  5. Set the keyframe interval. In the streaming encoder’s options, enter 2 seconds. Do not exceed 4 seconds.
  6. Configure audio. Set stereo AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz where the relevant OBS controls are available. Check that the intended audio source is active and not clipping or silent.
  7. Connect OBS to YouTube securely. In YouTube Studio’s live-control room, create or select the stream and copy its stream key. In OBS, use Settings → Stream to choose YouTube and connect the account or enter the stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, and reset it in YouTube Studio if exposed.
  8. Test before relying on the stream. Make an unlisted test with movement and audio representative of the real stream. Watch OBS’s status and YouTube’s stream-health messages while the mini PC is doing its normal work. No fixed test duration proves 24/7 stability.

For encoder-specific choices, OBS explains the performance trade-offs in its hardware encoding guide. Its system requirements guidance notes that performance depends on encoder, output, and scene demands.

Check whether the connection has enough capacity

Run an upload speed test on the connection the mini PC will actually use. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the total bitrate. For example, a 14 Mbps H.264 video bitrate already needs more than 14 Mbps of available upload capacity once audio and headroom are included. Speed-test results can vary, so judge stability during a representative test rather than relying on a single peak reading.

OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming. Its dropped-frame guidance notes that dropped frames can indicate an unstable network path or a bitrate that exceeds available capacity. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide and YouTube’s encoder settings page.

Can a mini PC run OBS 24/7?

It may, if its encoder, cooling, operating system, scene, and sustained network connection remain stable under the actual workload. The mini PC model and its hardware encoder are not specified here, so there is no universal preset or reliable CPU-load estimate. A successful short test is useful but does not establish long-term uptime. Test the intended content, monitor stream health, and check the system during extended operation before depending on it.

YouTube’s help guidance covers encoder setup and stream-health checks, but it does not certify particular mini PCs for continuous operation or guarantee uninterrupted streaming. A stream can also stop if the PC, OBS, power, or network connection fails.

Troubleshoot the problems you see

Symptom Likely cause What to try
Dropped frames or unstable stream health Insufficient or inconsistent upload capacity, wireless interference, or a bitrate too close to the connection’s limit. Use Ethernet, recheck upload capacity, keep YouTube’s 20% headroom, and lower the bitrate or output demands if necessary. Check the cable and network path.
OBS reports rendering or encoding lag The GPU cannot composite the scene or the encoder cannot keep up with the output. Remove unnecessary sources, filters, and animations; reduce resolution or frame rate; try an available supported hardware encoder and retest.
Video looks soft or blocky Bitrate may be too low for the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, or motion. Confirm that the chosen table row matches the actual output and whether you are using the minimum or recommended rate. If upload capacity is the limit, use a lower resolution or frame rate rather than oversaturating the connection.
No audio, wrong audio, or clipping Incorrect source routing, muted input, or unsuitable levels/settings. Check OBS’s audio mixer and selected sources, then test representative playback and confirm stereo AAC settings where applicable.
Stream will not connect or stops unexpectedly Incorrect or invalid stream key, YouTube-side stream configuration, OBS failure, or a PC/network interruption. Recheck the selected YouTube stream and key in YouTube Studio and OBS, inspect OBS and YouTube messages, and verify that the PC and connection remain available.

Copyright and repeat-content checks for a video loop

Using OBS to loop prerecorded video does not grant permission to broadcast it. Before going live, confirm that you own or have the necessary rights to every video, song, image, and other included material. YouTube may apply copyright enforcement to a live stream, and a technical encoder setup does not resolve those rights issues. YouTube monetization eligibility is a separate matter: repeated or reused material may be reviewed under YouTube’s channel policies even when a stream is technically functioning. Review YouTube’s current rules for the channel and content before building a continuous loop. The copyright safety checklist can help organize those checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When cloud playback may suit a prerecorded loop better

If the goal is continuous playback of uploaded videos rather than operating a local OBS session, YouTube’s verified-encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based service for 24/7 streaming without a dedicated PC. That listing is not a comparison of current plans or prices. For a YouTube-only cloud option, StreamNeo is #1 to try first: it keeps an uploaded video or playlist running from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a free first day.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos to a YouTube channel; it does not stream from a camera.

Estimate upload time and compare running costs

Large recordings can take time to upload before a loop is ready. Use the upload-time calculator to estimate transfer time. If you are weighing an always-on local computer against cloud playback, the cloud vs PC cost calculator can help frame the costs using your circumstances; do not assume the mini PC’s purchase price alone represents the cost of keeping it and the network running.
