For a silent, continuous ambient stream, use an OBS scene with a looping video source, H.264 video with constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Set resolution and bitrate to what your measured upload can sustain with headroom, disable or mute every audio input, and test the exact setup in YouTube’s preview before going live. For a 24/7 run, also plan for monitoring and a local recording if you need a complete archive: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
Build a looping ambient-video scene
- In OBS, create a scene for the stream and add the ambient clip as a media source.
- Enable looping for the media source. OBS’s general scene-and-source guidance does not establish a universal current menu path for the loop control, so check the options shown in your installed version.
- Preview the end-to-start transition several times. Look for a black frame, pause, abrupt jump, or other visual break. If the asset itself has a visible discontinuity, fix or replace the file before scheduling a long stream.
Keep the scene simple: fewer unnecessary sources make it easier to identify which source is responsible if the picture or sound is wrong.

Choose output resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings
Resolution and frame rate
In OBS, open Settings → Video and set the output resolution and frame rate you intend to send. YouTube accepts live video up to 60 fps and advises choosing a quality your connection can sustain. For mostly static ambient visuals, 30 fps is a reasonable starting point, not a platform requirement. Compare 720p30 and 1080p30 against the detail and motion in your video and your stable upload capacity; a reliable lower-resolution stream is preferable to a higher setting that repeatedly falters.
Codec, rate control, and keyframes
For YouTube RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval with four seconds as the maximum. YouTube recommends RTMPS. OBS’s available encoder names and hardware options depend on the installed OBS version and computer, so use the compatible options actually available in your encoder settings.

Bitrate examples and upload headroom
YouTube’s current live-ingest guidance lists the following H.264 bitrates. These are YouTube’s published minimum and recommended values for the stated resolution and frame rate, not a guarantee that a particular connection will remain stable.

YouTube’s table also lists AV1/H.265 minimum and recommended values of 2/6 Mbps at 720p30 and 4/10 Mbps at 1080p30. Do not mix those codec-specific figures with H.264 values when choosing a profile. YouTube advises leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom. Base the decision on stable outbound upload—not download speed—and test sustained performance rather than relying on a brief speed-test peak. Make the stream silent—and verify what YouTube receives
- In OBS, open Settings → Audio and disable desktop audio and microphone devices you do not need.
- Inspect the Audio Mixer and mute or disable any audio source attached to the scene or media source. A video file can contain audio even if you intend the broadcast to be silent.
- Start a private or unlisted rehearsal using the exact scene and encoder configuration. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and confirm that no unintended sound is present.
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS documentation lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs, but it does not clearly establish that every ingest setup accepts a stream with no audio track at all. Test your own ingest path rather than assuming that muting sources and omitting the track are equivalent. If the rehearsal shows that an audio track is required, use a silent track and verify that it remains inaudible.
Rehearse and monitor a long run
Before scheduling a 24/7 session, test the exact media file, loop, output resolution, encoder, network, and silent-audio arrangement. YouTube recommends a test stream and ongoing checks of audio and video quality; OBS likewise advises testing before streaming. In the Live Control Room, watch the preview and stream-health messages. During the broadcast, check OBS for dropped frames and encoder overload, and confirm that any local recording continues to grow.

A 24-hour run is not guaranteed by a particular setting: the computer, encoder, source file, network, and account all affect whether a stream stays up. Arrange monitoring that can detect a stopped broadcast rather than treating a successful short rehearsal as proof of a full-day run.
Protect the recording if the archive matters
YouTube says a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 session therefore should not rely on YouTube for a complete archive. If preserving the full event matters, make a separate local recording and plan for its storage and the additional encoder load.

OBS recommends MKV for most recording use cases because an interrupted recording remains recoverable; you can remux it afterward if you need another container. See YouTube’s archive guidance and OBS’s recording formats guide. A local backup still needs enough disk space and should be checked during the stream.

- Dropped frames or an unstable connection: OBS says these can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate higher than the connection can sustain. Reduce bitrate and test again; try a different ingest server if one is available. OBS recommends wired connectivity where practical, but Ethernet cannot fix inadequate ISP upload capacity or encoder overload. See OBS’s dropped-frames guidance.
- Encoder overload: Lower output resolution or frame rate, or select a suitable encoder option available in your OBS installation. Re-test under the same conditions as the planned long run.
- A visible gap at the loop point: Inspect the source file’s ending and beginning, then replay the transition in OBS. A loop setting cannot remove a discontinuity already present in the media.
- Unexpected sound: Check the mixer, media-source audio, desktop audio, and microphone devices. Verify the result in YouTube’s preview, not only in the OBS preview.
- No usable YouTube preview or a stream-health warning: Recheck the selected stream key and ingest settings, then compare codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current requirements. Do not change several variables at once; repeat the rehearsal after each change.
- Missing archive after a long stream: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use the local recording plan for sessions where a complete copy is essential.
