To run pre-recorded lo-fi animation continuously through OBS, loop one clip with a Media Source or make a playlist with OBS’s VLC Video Source, then set the encoder to YouTube’s recommendations for your chosen resolution and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30 or 3 Mbps at 720p30, with CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. Test the actual playback and connection before relying on a long broadcast: YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be archived automatically, and OBS has no universal 24/7 preset that guarantees uninterrupted operation.
Choose how OBS plays the clips
One repeating animation
In OBS, add a Media Source, select the video file, and enable Loop. This is the straightforward option when the stream should repeat one animation.

A playlist of clips
For multiple videos, add a VLC Video Source and configure its playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to be available. OBS documents playlist playback, but does not promise gapless transitions or advanced scheduling. Play the entire sequence in a test scene and check what happens at clip boundaries before going live. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Match output to the source animation and your sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends choosing a quality your connection can reliably support and running a speed test. Its encoder guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” YouTube also transcodes live streams for different viewers. The figures below are YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations and minimums, not guarantees of stable performance on a particular computer or connection. For codecs or resolutions not shown, use YouTube’s full encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table.
| Output | Recommended H.264 bitrate | YouTube minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 2 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Practical starting point
For a source made at 30 fps, 720p30 or 1080p30 is a sensible starting comparison. Use 60 fps only when the source’s motion benefits from it and the encoder and network can sustain the higher bitrate. A mostly still scene and an animation with moving particles may compress differently, so test representative movement rather than judging from a static frame. These are setup considerations, not measured performance results.

Encoder and audio parameters
- Set rate control to CBR.
- Set keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- For typical stereo SDR audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3, 128 kbps, and 44.1 kHz stereo.
- For typical SDR video, use Rec. 709 color and 8-bit SDR.
- YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, and recommends RTMPS.
Use YouTube’s guidance for the selected codec and output rather than applying the H.264 examples to every encoder format. Keep enough real upload headroom for a sustained stream; a bitrate recommendation alone cannot account for fluctuations on your connection.

- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. See Get started with live streaming.
- Get the ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the server URL and stream key for the encoder workflow, then enter them in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or publish it in setup instructions.
- Prepare and preview. Start the encoder stream in advance, then check the Live Control Room preview before taking it live. Test using audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast.
- Monitor the run. Watch OBS and YouTube’s stream health, listen for audio problems, and check picture quality. If recording locally, verify that the archive file is growing and can be played back. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing and continuous monitoring.
Plan continuity and the replay separately
A 24/7 OBS broadcast depends on the computer, encoder, source files, and internet connection continuing to work; a settings preset cannot guarantee that. Test the full playlist cycle and a representative extended run, and decide how you will respond if OBS, the media source, or the connection stops. YouTube publishes testing and monitoring advice, not an uptime or recovery guarantee for a particular OBS setup.

Do not rely on YouTube to create a complete archive of a 24-hour stream. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours may be archived automatically; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. If a replay matters, consider shorter sessions or a separate local recording and rotation workflow, and inspect the resulting files. Neither session splitting nor local recording guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast or a successful archive. Details: Archive live streams and Turn on DVR on live streams.
Common problems and fixes
- Clip stops at the end: For one file, check that Loop is enabled on its Media Source. For several clips, check the VLC Video Source playlist and confirm VLC is installed.
- Black or missing preview: Confirm the source file path is valid and the clip plays in OBS. Reopen the source properties and test playback before starting the broadcast.
- Unstable stream or dropped frames: Compare the output bitrate with the relevant YouTube recommendation and minimum; test sustained upload capacity, then lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if necessary. Retest stream health rather than assuming one change fixed the issue.
- Audio missing or out of sync: Check the media source’s audio routing and OBS meters, then listen to the YouTube preview. Verify the chosen audio format and sample rate against YouTube’s guidance.
- No complete YouTube replay: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured automatically. Use a deliberate archive plan and verify local recordings rather than expecting the live broadcast itself to create a full replay.
- Stream key exposed: Replace or reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS. Do not share the key publicly.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer or home connection running continuously, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed. Start the free day.
