To start an FFmpeg YouTube stream at an intended Indian Standard Time (IST) time, schedule the event in YouTube Studio and separately arrange for FFmpeg to start sending its feed. FFmpeg’s -re option paces file input at its native frame rate; it does not schedule a process to start at a future clock time. Check the time zone displayed in YouTube Studio before saving the event: the available documentation does not establish the Live Control Room’s current time-zone selector or default.
What YouTube schedules—and what FFmpeg does
These are two separate parts of the setup:
- YouTube Studio schedules the event. The event can provide an upcoming watch page, promotion and reminders.
- FFmpeg sends the media feed. Its process must be started independently, either by you or by an external process scheduler.
For YouTube’s documented encoder workflow, starting FFmpeg is not necessarily the final launch action: start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live when the event is ready.

Schedule the YouTube event for the intended IST time
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Open Manage and select Schedule stream.
- Enter the event date and intended start time.
- Before saving, inspect the time zone shown in the current scheduling interface. Confirm that the displayed date and time represent the intended IST wall-clock time. Do not assume the scheduler defaults to IST or that its time zone matches your computer’s.
- Save the event and note its scheduled date and time. YouTube says a scheduled event can help viewers find the upcoming stream and set reminders.
The reviewed documentation does not confirm the Live Control Room’s present time-zone selector or default. YouTube’s separate help for scheduling ordinary video publication discusses entering a time zone, but that is not proof of the Live Control Room’s behavior. Likewise, a scheduled video’s displayed publication date is a separate issue from a live event’s scheduled start.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConnect FFmpeg to the event
- Open the scheduled event in YouTube Live Control Room and obtain its stream URL and stream key.
- Use those values in your FFmpeg output configuration. Keep the stream key private: YouTube treats it like a password for sending a stream.
- Prepare the FFmpeg command or supervising process so it begins sending the feed at the intended time. If the input is a media file that should be read in real time, FFmpeg’s
-reoption reads it at its native frame rate; it is equivalent to-readrate 1. - Start the encoder, check that YouTube receives the feed and displays a preview, then use Go live in Live Control Room when the event is ready.
- Monitor the stream and confirm that the event is accessible. Test the setup beforehand and check that any local recording or archive is usable if you need one.
This workflow explains where the stream URL and key come from and how to coordinate the event with FFmpeg. It does not prescribe a complete FFmpeg command because the appropriate input and output configuration depends on the source media and setup.

Start FFmpeg at a particular clock time
If FFmpeg must begin at a particular wall-clock time, use an external process scheduler to launch it. That is an operational choice outside YouTube’s scheduled-event controls; -re is an input read-rate setting, not a calendar scheduler. Configure the process scheduler’s time zone to match the intended event time, and check the YouTube event’s displayed zone independently.
For a controlled launch, YouTube’s documented encoder flow still calls for starting the encoder, confirming the preview, and clicking Go live. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. Treat those as preparation guidance, not as a replacement for checking the preview and the event’s actual schedule.

Keep clock time separate from FFmpeg timestamps
IST in this context is the wall-clock time at which the event should begin. It is different from a media file’s presentation timestamps and from FFmpeg’s input pacing. FFmpeg documents date parsing as local time unless a date includes Z, in which case it is interpreted as UTC. That parsing rule does not make -re a way to schedule a future start.

Do not convert the intended event time using an assumed YouTube default or assume that your operating system, FFmpeg timestamp interpretation and Live Control Room all use the same zone. Confirm the time shown by YouTube and configure any external scheduler to use the zone appropriate to your intended start.

Choose the launch approach that fits the event
| Approach | Useful when | What to coordinate |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube scheduled event plus manual encoder launch | You want an upcoming event page, viewer reminders and a person to check the feed before launch. | Schedule the event, start FFmpeg ahead of time, check its preview and click Go live. |
| YouTube scheduled event plus an external process scheduler | A file-based feed must begin at a particular wall-clock time. | Align the scheduler’s time zone with the intended start, and verify the event’s displayed time zone separately. The scheduler starts FFmpeg; it is not a YouTube feature. |
The right choice also depends on whether FFmpeg reads a file or another source, whether you need a person to confirm the preview and launch, and whether the scheduled event’s watch page and reminders matter.
Troubleshooting schedule and launch problems
- The stream starts at the wrong local time: Check the date, time and zone shown in the YouTube scheduling interface, then verify the external scheduler’s configured zone. Do not infer one from the other.
- The event is scheduled, but no feed appears: Confirm that FFmpeg has actually started, that it is using the stream URL and key from the intended event, and that YouTube receives the encoder feed.
- The feed appears, but the event has not gone live: In the documented encoder workflow, wait for the preview and click Go live when ready.
- A file runs faster than real time: For file input intended for live output, use FFmpeg’s
-reread-rate behavior. It paces input at the native frame rate; it does not control the future start time. - The stream key may have been exposed: Treat it as a password-like credential. Do not publish it; replace or reset the credential through YouTube’s stream settings if it is no longer private.
