Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf OBS stays on “Connecting,” don’t assume the stream key—or YouTube—is automatically at fault. Check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room health message and OBS’s connection and performance indicators first; they help distinguish a channel or stream setup problem from a network or encoding issue. Then work through the fixes below in order, starting with reversible checks.
1. Check YouTube’s live health message
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check the stream health indicator and any timestamped error messages. YouTube’s dashboard checks the incoming feed. A red error is critical and may prevent the stream from starting; a yellow warning can affect the event’s quality. Record the exact message and time before changing settings. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.

Separate “YouTube is not receiving a feed” from “YouTube is receiving a feed with poor audio or video.” If no feed arrives, check OBS’s output and the destination/key next. If the feed arrives but has a health warning, follow the warning’s specific guidance rather than changing unrelated settings.
2. Verify channel eligibility, destination, and stream key
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If live streaming has not yet been enabled or activation is pending, changing OBS settings will not bypass YouTube’s process. See YouTube live streaming tips.

Check OBS’s YouTube service and current key
In OBS, confirm the selected service and server are for the intended YouTube stream. Then compare the configured key with the current key shown in the stream’s settings in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If you reset the key, replace the old value in OBS with the newly copied one. YouTube’s guidance for third-party encoder startup errors also advises retrieving the key from Live Control Room and pasting it into the encoder. See Manage live stream settings and Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
Keep the key private. Do not include it in a screenshot, public log, support post, or message to someone who does not need it. If you share diagnostic details, redact the key and any other credentials.

Check Auto-start and Auto-stop for a 24/7 event
In the YouTube stream’s settings, review Auto-start and Auto-stop and make sure they fit the way you intend to run the broadcast. These settings affect whether the encoder can start or stop the stream; the available guidance does not establish them as a universal cause of OBS remaining on “Connecting.”

Check OBS’s connection statistics for dropped frames. OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. That points toward connection stability or capacity—not necessarily an encoding-performance problem. Follow the OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting steps before replacing hardware.

Try low-risk network checks
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming.
- Temporarily test without a VPN, security software, or bundled network “optimization” utility that could interfere with the connection. Restore protection afterward and change one variable at a time.
- In OBS’s network settings, confirm Bind to IP is set to Default. IPv4-only can be a diagnostic test if dual-stack connectivity seems implicated; if it does not help, return to the default IPv4/IPv6 setting.
- If available in your OBS version, treat network optimization/TCP pacing and dynamic bitrate as optional tests, not guaranteed fixes. Dynamic bitrate can lower stream quality and does not resolve the underlying network cause.
- Test another ingest server if OBS offers one for the selected service. A different result can help isolate the route to the server.
Choose a bitrate for the connection and video mode
OBS’s 2024 troubleshooting guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a rough starting heuristic, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee. Actual capacity varies, and the path to the ingest server matters. YouTube’s recommended bitrate ranges depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the relevant row in its live encoder settings and bitrate table rather than copying a single number as a universal fix.
For example, YouTube’s current table recommends 12 Mbps and lists 6 Mbps as the minimum for H.264 at 1080p60. Those figures apply to that video mode; they are not a general target for every codec, resolution, or frame rate. If dropped frames are increasing, temporarily lower the video bitrate and test again.

- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
Test the physical link only when evidence points there
A faulty cable, network card, switch, extender, router, modem, or outdated network driver can contribute to connection trouble, but a replacement cable will not fix an incorrect key, channel restriction, format error, or ISP-side problem. Test one component at a time; if you are unsure whether the network route or equipment is at fault, OBS advises contacting your ISP before replacing hardware.
4. Check stream format and OBS performance separately
Match the encoder settings to YouTube’s requirements
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, video codecs H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, CBR bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Test with motion and audio similar to the actual broadcast, and monitor stream health; YouTube advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

If Live Control Room reports an incorrect stream format, follow that exact error. YouTube’s reference for that particular error specifies H.264 video and AAC audio. Do not apply that pair as a blanket fix for every “Connecting” problem.
Look for rendering or encoding overload
If OBS shows rendering or encoding lag rather than rising dropped frames, investigate performance separately. Check GPU pressure and other GPU-heavy applications; on Windows, try running OBS as administrator. Simplify scenes or reduce output resolution or frame rate if the system cannot keep up. These are steps from the OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide. Encoding overload and network dropped frames are different bottlenecks, so changing bitrate alone may not help a performance problem.
5. Escalate with useful diagnostics
If the stream still will not connect, gather details before contacting support or your ISP. Do not share the stream key.
Recommended Free Tools
- OBS version and operating system
- Whether OBS reports dropped frames, rendering lag, or encoding lag
- The exact YouTube health or error message and its timestamp
- The selected stream destination, with the key omitted
- An upload-speed result, whether a VPN or security software is active, and whether a wired or alternate-network test changes the result
YouTube recommends testing outbound internet and checking the encoder when the output appears healthy but the dashboard is not receiving the expected feed. If an internet test points to a connection problem, contact your ISP; YouTube also provides a support path for ongoing live-stream issues. OBS likewise advises contacting the ISP when network problems persist after its diagnostic steps. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and the OBS connection guide.
