There is no universal best duration or memory setting: the right values depend on the clip you want, your OBS release, output settings, encoder and PC. Test the complete stream-and-buffer workload before relying on it.
What Replay Buffer does—and what it does not do
OBS Replay Buffer continuously holds a recent segment of encoded video so you can save it after the moment has happened. It is a recording-side feature; it does not set YouTube’s ingest bitrate or make a stream more reliable. Enabling the buffer is not enough to save clips: you also need to start it and assign a save action.

For a loop-stream PC, think of the live stream and Replay Buffer as two jobs sharing system resources. Stream output settings determine what OBS sends to YouTube. Replay Buffer settings determine how much recent footage OBS can retain for a save. Configure each separately, then test them together.
Configure the YouTube stream first
Set OBS for the resolution, frame rate, codec and audio you intend to broadcast, using YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the matching combination. YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec and output format, so use the applicable row rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, checking upload capacity with a speed test, testing with representative audio and motion, and watching stream health during the event. As YouTube Help puts it, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not make an unstable or unsuitable signal at ingest acceptable. Choose settings your connection can sustain consistently. The OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a starting point based on intended use, computer resources and network conditions; it cannot verify that your particular loop, stream and Replay Buffer will remain stable for an extended run.
Enable Replay Buffer and choose its duration
- Open the output settings. In OBS, select Settings → Output and enable Replay Buffer. The precise controls can vary with OBS release and output mode; use the labels shown by your installed version.
- Choose a maximum replay time. Set it to the length of footage you realistically need to recover. A longer window retains more recent footage, but requires more memory. OBS may display an estimated memory use; use that as a planning aid, not as a universal RAM recommendation.
- Choose a destination and naming approach. Set a clear recording path and filename convention that make saved clips easy to find. Check available disk space for the files you intend to keep. OBS documents the Recording Path setting, but no particular drive type is required by the available guidance.
There is no evidence-backed preset for an unspecified PC. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene complexity, output configuration and the selected duration all affect the workload. Do not assume that meeting OBS’s minimum system requirements guarantees a stable stream at a particular quality with Replay Buffer running.

Assign and verify the save hotkey
- Open Settings → Hotkeys and locate Save Replay Buffer.
- Assign a key or key combination that does not conflict with other OBS actions or software on the PC.
- Start the Replay Buffer, run a representative test, trigger the hotkey, and inspect the saved file. Confirm its duration, audio, playback and destination.
The OBS Project’s OBS Studio Overview Guide identifies Replay Buffer among recording settings and notes that a hotkey must be set to save the buffer. It also advises: “It’s strongly recommended that you test everything as best as you can before starting your first live stream.”

Start the Replay Buffer and the YouTube stream, then test for long enough to represent the workload you expect from the loop PC. Watch OBS for dropped frames or encoding problems, monitor YouTube’s stream health, check remaining disk space, and confirm that the replay file is actually produced. A short successful test does not establish unattended reliability over a much longer period.

OBS documents separate launch parameters, --startstreaming and --startreplaybuffer, for starting the two functions. They can be building blocks for startup automation, but confirm their behavior on your operating system and installed OBS release. Launch parameters alone do not establish recovery from a power cut, network interruption, expired session or OBS crash. Save a reproducible setup in an OBS Profile: Profiles include Stream, Video and Output settings, as described in the OBS Profiles guide.
Adjust settings when the test fails
- OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube reports poor stream health: investigate connection stability and whether the chosen output bitrate is sustainable. Recheck YouTube’s guidance for the actual codec, resolution and frame rate, and test again.
- OBS reports encoding overload or the PC struggles: reduce the workload or revisit output and encoder settings. Performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene; adding memory alone may not resolve an encoding bottleneck.
- The saved replay is shorter than expected or cannot be saved: verify that the buffer was started, the save hotkey is assigned and triggered, and OBS has a valid destination with free disk space. Recheck the installed version’s maximum time and memory controls, then test another replay.
- Startup automation does not start both functions: check the exact launch parameters and behavior for your OS and OBS release. Treat streaming and Replay Buffer as separate actions, and verify each after startup.
