OBS Recording Format Settings to Protect Local Backups of a 24/7 Stream

For a 24/7 OBS recording, MKV is the safest default when interruption recovery matters. Here’s how to choose a format, remux to MP4, plan storage, and preserve settings.

For a 24/7 OBS recording, choose MKV if your priority is keeping a playable, recoverable file after a crash or power loss. Standard MP4 and MOV need finalization and can become unrecoverable if recording stops unexpectedly. If you need MP4 compatibility, OBS 30.2 and later offers Hybrid MP4, which uses fragmented writing and soft-remux finalization; check that its codec support suits your workflow.

Which OBS recording format is safest if your computer crashes?

OBS recommends MKV when an unexpected stop is a concern. Its documentation says an unfinished MKV recording remains playable and recoverable, and that the whole file will not be corrupted if recording does not stop gracefully. This makes MKV the straightforward choice for a long local recording where interruption is possible. OBS Standard Recording Output Guide and its Audio/Video Formats Guide describe these format behaviors.

Format Interruption behavior Compatibility and workflow notes
MKV OBS describes it as failsafe; unfinished recordings remain playable and recoverable. Supports every encoder combination in OBS. Remux to MP4 if your editor or delivery workflow requires a standard MP4.
Regular MP4/MOV Requires file finalization; if writing is interrupted, OBS warns the file may not be recoverable. Do not choose it as the safest direct-recording format when crashes or power loss are in scope.
Fragmented MP4/MOV Fragmented writing avoids the same finalization dependency as regular MP4/MOV. Confirm codec and target-editor compatibility before relying on it.
Hybrid MP4 Uses fragmented writing and soft-remux finalization for wider compatibility; OBS describes it as recoverable after an aborted write. Available in OBS 30.2 and later; supports H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video. Audio support differs, including limited PCM compatibility.
Hybrid MOV Uses the hybrid fragmented-writing approach. Supports H.264, HEVC, and ProRes video. Relevant when the workflow needs its codec profile, especially ProRes.

These behaviors and codec distinctions are documented in OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide and Hybrid MP4 & Hybrid MOV Formats. Availability and supported combinations depend on the OBS version and codecs you use; verify that your intended editor can open the resulting file.

How do I set up a resilient recording in OBS?

  1. Choose a known destination: open Settings > Output, select the recording path, and place it on storage with enough free space for the recording and retention period you intend. Confirm the destination drive is mounted and writable before starting a long session. OBS’s Standard Recording Output Guide covers recording output settings.
  2. Set the recording format: in Settings > Output, choose MKV for maximum emphasis on recovery after an interrupted write. If you need an MP4-compatible file, consider Hybrid MP4 only when your OBS version offers it and its codec support matches your source and editor.
  3. Choose a quality preset for the duration: balance visual quality against disk growth and encoding headroom. A 24/7 recording continuously consumes storage; check available space against the bitrate or expected file growth of your own output rather than assuming a short test’s size will fit.
  4. Test a short recording: stop it normally, open it in your target player or editor, and confirm video, audio, and any intended codec combination work. For a Hybrid format, check the actual application compatibility you need.
  5. Preserve your configuration: export the OBS profile after setting the output options. Profiles preserve most output settings, but not scenes; export or otherwise back up the scene collection separately.
  6. Define a second-copy routine: decide how often to copy valuable recordings to separate storage and how long to retain each copy. A resilient container helps with an interrupted file write; it is not a backup of the drive or computer.

OBS does not prescribe a complete 24/7 backup architecture in the reviewed recording guides. Choose a retention and second-copy routine suited to the value and volume of your recordings.

How do I record in MKV and convert it to MP4 afterward?

Keep the original MKV as your recovery-oriented recording, then use OBS remuxing when an MP4 editing copy is needed. Remuxing changes the container; it is not a substitute for transcoding if your editor requires different codecs.

  1. Record in MKV and stop the recording normally when the session is finished.
  2. In OBS, open File > Remux Recordings.
  3. Select the MKV recording and run the remux. Confirm the resulting MP4 opens in your target editor before deleting or moving the original.
  4. Alternatively, enable automatic remuxing after recording stops in the recording output settings, if that option is available in your OBS version.

OBS documents these remux options in its Standard Recording Output Guide. Retaining the MKV until the MP4 has been checked leaves you with the original recording if the compatibility copy is not usable.

How much storage does a 24/7 recording need?

Container choice does not make a large recording small. Your encoder settings, resolution, frame rate, and recording length drive storage use; leave room for the whole retention window and avoid filling the destination disk. OBS specifically warns that its Lossless preset uses the CPU encoder and produces very large files: OBS published an estimate of around 7 GB per minute for that preset in its 2023 Recording Encoder Presets Guide. That is OBS’s published figure, not a calculation for your particular stream. The Indistinguishable preset can also increase storage needs and affect older or weaker hardware.

Before leaving a recording running, use a short sample to measure actual file growth with your selected settings, then apply that rate to your planned duration and retention. If you keep a separate copy on an external drive, size it for the measured recording rate and retention period; a single drive is not protection against every failure.

Common recording problems and fixes

  • The file will not play after an unexpected stop: if you recorded directly to regular MP4 or MOV, finalization may not have completed. For future recordings, use MKV or a supported hybrid format, then test that format in your workflow.
  • The MP4 copy is missing or unusable: check whether OBS completed remuxing after recording stopped. Try File > Remux Recordings on the original MKV and verify the result in the intended editor before removing the source.
  • The editor rejects the recording: the container may be supported while its video or audio codec is not. Check the editor’s codec requirements and OBS’s format support; select a compatible combination or use a workflow that converts codecs rather than only remuxing.
  • The recording stops because the disk fills: choose a destination with sufficient free space, reduce the quality or bitrate if appropriate, shorten retention, or move older files to separate storage. Do not assume the container setting solves a capacity problem.
  • The recording strains an older computer: avoid assuming that a high-quality preset is sustainable for nonstop operation. OBS notes that Indistinguishable can affect older or weaker hardware, while Lossless uses the CPU encoder and creates very large files. Test the intended settings before depending on them for a long session.
  • Your output settings are lost during a move or reinstall: export the OBS profile as JSON, and preserve the scene collection separately because profiles do not contain scenes.
