You can stream a prerecorded video to YouTube without leaving a home computer on: run an encoder on an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) virtual machine and send the file to YouTube over RTMPS. You need a YouTube live event and its stream key, a VM with outbound internet access, and an encoder configured for the file and stream profile. The steps below use YouTube and Oracle’s published guidance; no particular VM shape or encoder command is assumed to have been tested.
What you need before starting
- An OCI tenancy and a VM you can access. If you plan to use Always Free compute, Oracle says the instance must be in the tenancy’s home region. Confirm that your home region is Mumbai before relying on Always Free eligibility.
- A prerecorded video file available to the VM, either already stored there or transferred to it.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus a live event created or scheduled in YouTube Live Control Room.
- An encoder on the VM that can read your file and publish to YouTube using RTMPS. YouTube describes encoder software as one way to go live and provides the server URL and stream key in Live Control Room: YouTube encoder setup.
Check OCI’s current shape eligibility, quota, and capacity in the console. Oracle notes that temporary host-capacity shortages can prevent instance creation, so a Mumbai region label does not guarantee that a particular shape is available or suitable for your encoding workload. The tenancy’s home region is account-specific. See Oracle’s Always Free resource information.

1. Set up VM connectivity to YouTube
The encoder initiates an outbound connection to YouTube; you do not need to open an inbound port for YouTube ingest. The VM needs a working route to the public internet, and its network security rules must permit outbound traffic.

For a public-subnet setup, OCI’s quick action can configure an internet gateway, a route rule, and a security rule for a public-IP instance. In an existing virtual cloud network (VCN), check that the subnet’s route table points to an internet gateway, the VM has the required public IP, and its security list or network security group permits the outbound connection. Oracle explains the internet gateway and routing setup and security list behavior. OCI’s default security list allows stateful egress, but customized rules may differ.

Private instance with egress
A VM without a public IP still needs a configured egress path, such as a NAT gateway. The right design depends on the VCN you already have; confirm its route table and security rules rather than assuming that a private subnet can reach YouTube by default. Oracle documents NAT gateway setup.
2. Create the YouTube event and get its RTMPS details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live event for your channel.
- In the event’s stream settings, retrieve the stream URL and stream key. For encrypted ingest, select or reveal the RTMPS URL; YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default.
- Use the exact RTMPS URL supplied by Live Control Room and its specified key. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance uses TLS over port 443. Do not guess or manually reconstruct the endpoint.
- Store the stream key as a secret. Do not place it in public screenshots, logs, source control, or shell history. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s controls.
RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. An encoder must support that connection correctly. If an implementation handles TLS itself, it must send the destination hostname through SNI. The exact endpoint and key from Live Control Room help avoid mismatched URL, port, or TLS settings. See YouTube’s RTMPS guide.

3. Configure an encoder on the VM
Install or use an encoder compatible with the VM’s operating system, then configure it to read the prerecorded file and publish to the event’s RTMPS destination with its stream key. The file’s video and audio codecs, track layout, frame rate, duration, and desired output profile determine the appropriate encoder settings. YouTube’s setup guide explains where to enter the server URL and key, but the available material here does not establish a validated FFmpeg command, Linux image, package version, or VM benchmark. Avoid copying an unverified command as though it were guaranteed to work.

Choose a stream profile
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s resolution-specific bitrate table to select a target profile: YouTube encoder settings.

- Choose a resolution and frame rate the source supports and the VM can sustain. A higher target can demand more network bandwidth and, if the encoder must transcode, more compute.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds where the encoder exposes that setting; do not exceed four seconds.
- Use constant bitrate and a bitrate appropriate to the chosen resolution, following YouTube’s table rather than selecting a value solely from the VM’s region or instance name.
- Check the source’s audio tracks and choose a compatible audio codec. Confirm that audio is actually present in the encoder output.
Check bandwidth and compute headroom
YouTube’s streaming tips say total bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommend 20% headroom. Treat that as YouTube guidance, not a measured guarantee for a particular VM. Also account for the VM’s actual outbound network performance, file decode complexity, and any real-time encoding load. If a representative test cannot sustain the selected profile, reduce the resolution or bitrate, or choose compute that can handle the workload. See YouTube streaming tips.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.4. Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- For a low-risk check, use an unlisted or private test event if that fits your intended audience and channel setup.
- Start the encoder and wait for the event preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that moving video and audio both appear, then inspect the stream-health information before starting or announcing the public broadcast.
- Keep the event’s stream-health panel visible while it runs. If YouTube reports problems, check its diagnostics alongside the encoder output and VM connectivity.
- For a file-based broadcast, confirm that the encoder reaches the end of the file and that the event ends as intended. Check the event afterward in YouTube Studio.
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume an event longer than that will be archived; if preservation matters, keep a separate copy in local or object storage and verify the resulting event in Studio. See YouTube encoder setup.

5. Understand the OCI cost and availability trade-offs
Always Free compute is available only in the tenancy’s home region, and Oracle warns that capacity can temporarily prevent provisioning. Oracle’s Always Free resource page lists 10 TB per month of outbound data for Always Free resources; confirm the current terms and your usage in the tenancy before planning a long or repeated stream around that allowance. A VM that is not Always Free may incur compute or networking charges under the applicable account terms. See Oracle’s Always Free details.
Streaming continuously also means keeping the VM and encoder running for the duration. Estimate how long the file or playlist will run, how much data it will send, and whether the selected instance can encode in real time before relying on the setup for a scheduled broadcast.
Troubleshooting common failures
Connection timeout or encoder cannot connect
- Verify that the encoder uses the exact RTMPS URL and port 443 shown in Live Control Room.
- Confirm the VM has an outbound route and that OCI security rules permit the connection. For a public subnet, inspect the internet gateway and route; for a private VM, inspect its egress path.
SSL or certificate error
- Check that the endpoint is RTMPS rather than RTMP and that the connection uses port 443.
- Ensure the encoder supports TLS. If a custom TLS implementation is involved, verify it sends SNI with the destination hostname.
No preview, missing audio, or unhealthy stream
- Check that the stream key belongs to the event whose URL you entered.
- Confirm the video and audio codecs are compatible, the file has the expected tracks, and keyframes follow YouTube’s timing guidance.
- Compare the target bitrate with the VM’s actual available outbound bandwidth. Reduce bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the profile.
- Inspect both encoder output and YouTube’s stream diagnostics; the symptom alone does not identify a single cause.
VM creation fails
Confirm the tenancy’s home region, Always Free eligibility, quotas, and the requested shape. If those are correct, temporary capacity constraints may still block provisioning; check availability in the OCI console or consider an eligible alternative rather than assuming Mumbai has capacity at that moment.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded videos live without maintaining an OCI VM and encoder, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
