Create two OBS Profiles—one with a 1280×720 output and one with a 1920×1080 output—then select the profile you want before starting your YouTube stream. Profiles save output settings, but not scenes: keep the correct Scene Collection selected separately. Choose bitrate for the actual frame rate and a stable upload connection, then test both profiles before relying on them.
What OBS Profiles change—and what they do not
An OBS Profile stores most settings related to outputs, including Video and Output settings. OBS documents separate output-resolution profiles as one use for Profiles. You can create, duplicate, rename, remove, import, or export a Profile from the Profile menu. See the OBS Profiles guide.

Scenes are separate: they belong to Scene Collections, not Profiles. Switching from a 720p Profile to a 1080p Profile does not change the scene layout or select a different loop source. Keep the intended Scene Collection selected as well.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCreate the two Profiles
- Create the 720p Profile: Open OBS’s Profile menu, choose New (or duplicate a suitable configured Profile), and name it clearly, such as YouTube Loop 720p.
- Create the 1080p Profile: Use Profile → Duplicate on the configured Profile, or create a new one, and name it YouTube Loop 1080p. Duplicating can preserve shared output settings so you only need to adjust what differs.
- Set the 720p output: With YouTube Loop 720p active, open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720.
- Set the 1080p output: Select YouTube Loop 1080p, return to Settings → Video, and set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080.
- Keep the canvas suited to the scene: Base (Canvas) Resolution is the work area where you position and compose sources; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the size OBS encodes for the stream. Set the canvas to suit your loop source and scene layout, and change the output size between Profiles. OBS’s Overview Guide explains the distinction.
- Set frame rate and encoder settings: Choose the target FPS in each Profile and set the stream encoder bitrate using the matching YouTube H.264 recommendation below. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. Keep the codec and other shared settings consistent unless a hardware or platform constraint calls for a change.
These are standard 16:9 output sizes. A loop source or scene can remain the same across both Profiles; the Profile controls the saved output configuration, not a special loop mode.

Choose a YouTube live bitrate for the output
YouTube’s live encoder settings distinguish recommendations by codec, ingestion resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 live-stream bitrate ranges, on its live encoder settings page (accessed 2026):
| Output | H.264 bitrate at 30 fps | H.264 bitrate at 60 fps |
|---|---|---|
| 1280×720 (720p) | 3–8 Mbps | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1920×1080 (1080p) | 5–14 Mbps | 6–17 Mbps |
Use the row for the output resolution and FPS you actually configured. These are live-ingestion ranges, not recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos. Other codec columns have their own settings; the table here is specifically for H.264.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain continuously, not just briefly. The best choice within a range depends on stable upload capacity and competing network use. OBS’s network guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a broad starting point, not a YouTube-specific guarantee; see OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting. Leave headroom for network variation and other traffic, and verify the chosen bitrate with a test stream.
CBR and keyframes
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. OBS also notes that consistent keyframes help viewers transition between quality options; see OBS Transcodes / Transcoding. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds in both Profiles.

Switch Profiles and test before streaming publicly
- Confirm the intended Scene Collection is selected; Profiles do not change it.
- Choose YouTube Loop 720p or YouTube Loop 1080p from OBS’s Profile menu before starting the stream.
- Check Settings → Video to confirm the active Output (Scaled) Resolution and FPS, and check the stream encoder settings for the matching bitrate, CBR, and 2-second keyframe interval.
- Run a private, unlisted, or otherwise suitable test before going live. Check YouTube’s stream health and watch a representative part of the loop for image quality, smooth playback, and audio. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health on its encoder settings page.
- Repeat the test after switching to the other Profile. A successful 720p test does not establish that the same computer and connection can sustain 1080p at the chosen FPS and bitrate.
Troubleshoot dropped frames or encoding overload
- Connection-related dropped frames: If OBS reports dropped frames from network issues or YouTube stream health indicates an unstable connection, lower the video bitrate to fit stable upload capacity, then test again. Reducing the output resolution may also let you use a lower bitrate.
- Encoding or rendering overload at 1080p: Check OBS Stats and YouTube stream health. Reduce Output (Scaled) Resolution or FPS, then retest. Higher output resolution and frame rate can increase system load. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide recommends lowering output resolution or frame rate when performance is insufficient.
- Sources no longer fit after changing resolution: Check Base (Canvas) Resolution and the source transforms in the selected Scene Collection. The canvas is the composition work area; changing output resolution is usually the simpler adjustment. OBS generally discourages lowering canvas size because sources may need repositioning or resizing. Consider doing so only when the system is severely short on GPU resources.
- The wrong scene or loop appears: Select the intended Scene Collection separately. A Profile switch changes saved output settings, not scenes.
- One Profile works and the other does not: Compare its output resolution, FPS, codec, bitrate, and system load with the successful Profile. Test the 1080p and 720p configurations independently rather than assuming one is a reliable substitute for the other.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube stream rather than configuring OBS on a computer, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs without a computer or home connection staying on; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
