Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallAn offline YouTube stream does not, by itself, prove OBS ran out of memory. First check whether OBS crashed or logged an allocation error, whether its stream output disconnected while OBS stayed open, and what YouTube Live Control Room reported at the same time. Those signals separate host RAM, GPU VRAM, rendering or encoding overload, and network trouble.
First establish what failed
At the time the stream went offline, note exactly what happened in OBS and YouTube. Record the displayed error text and timestamps rather than describing every interruption as “out of memory.”

- OBS process: Did OBS close unexpectedly, remain open, or display an explicit allocation or encoder error?
- Stream output: Did OBS stop sending, disconnect, or attempt to reconnect?
- YouTube: Did Live Control Room report an encoder error, say it was not receiving data, or show the stream as offline?
- Viewers: Was the stream offline for everyone, or did only some viewers report playback trouble?
An OBS crash or a logged allocation failure is different evidence from an output disconnect. YouTube’s offline status alone cannot tell you which occurred.

Save OBS session and crash information
Save the OBS log for the affected session and any crash log. Record your operating system, OBS version, GPU model and driver, encoder, scene and source setup, active plugins, output resolution and frame rate, and whether recording or Replay Buffer was also running. Note whether the incident followed a stream stop, reconnect, or scene/source change.

Watch OBS Stats during a controlled test
In applicable OBS versions, open View → Stats. Watch Memory Usage, CPU usage, average render time, frames missed due to rendering lag, and frames skipped due to encoding lag. OBS labels rendering and encoding lag separately; a high value in either is not proof of memory exhaustion.
Monitor system RAM and GPU memory alongside OBS
Use your operating system or GPU vendor’s diagnostic tools to observe system RAM and GPU memory (VRAM) at the same time as OBS Stats. Note whether memory rises steadily, spikes when a scene or source appears, or accumulates after output stops and reconnects. Preserve the exact encoder error, if one appears.

Compare the YouTube dashboard and local recording
Check YouTube Live Control Room for encoder errors and viewer reports. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder CPU load and a local archive when stream quality is poor; if the encoder picture and sound look healthy, it points to testing the outbound internet connection. Match the evidence to the likely cause
| What you observe | Likely diagnostic branch | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS exits or logs an allocation failure, while system RAM is exhausted or OBS process memory climbs. | Host memory pressure, source or plugin growth, or a software defect. | Correlate per-process and system RAM with scenes, browser sources, plugins, and logs. Test a clean profile only as a controlled comparison; there is no universal RAM threshold or source-level fix established here. |
CUDA_ERROR_OUT_OF_MEMORY or an NVENC error appears, and GPU memory rises after output stops, starts, or reconnects. |
GPU VRAM or encoder allocation path. | Capture GPU memory and encoder logs around each restart; compare software and hardware versions, and check the status of the specific reported issue before deciding it applies. |
| OBS remains open, output disconnects, dropped frames rise, and there is no allocation failure. | Connection to the streaming ingest server is unstable, or the configured bitrate exceeds what the connection can sustain. | Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps: compare bitrate with stable upload, try another server or service where possible, check VPN/security/network-optimization software and network drivers, and prefer wired networking. |
| CPU load is high and rendering or encoding lag rises. | Rendering or encoding capacity problem. | Compare OBS Stats with YouTube encoder errors and the local archive. Test a lower workload or encoder setting one change at a time. |
| Display or output initialization fails only after GPU memory is consumed. | GPU resource pressure may be affecting more than encoding. | Preserve logs and GPU telemetry. Do not assume lowering stream bitrate alone will restore VRAM; the reported issue describes this symptom in a specific reproduction. |
When OBS stays open: investigate the connection separately
OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote streaming server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; dropping too many frames may disconnect the stream. Its connection troubleshooting guide recommends lowering bitrate to suit stable upload, trying a different server or service where possible, checking VPN, security and network-optimization software and network drivers, and preferring wired networking over Wi-Fi.
Dynamic bitrate can mitigate congestion, but it is not a root-cause fix and may reduce video quality. OBS sends to the selected streaming service’s ingest path, so a disconnect without allocation evidence warrants checking the path between your computer and that service—not blaming memory automatically.

Interpret memory-leak reports narrowly
An OBS Studio GitHub issue report #13656 describes NVIDIA NVENC surface allocations that reportedly were not freed after output stop/start, including reconnects, eventually leading to CUDA_ERROR_OUT_OF_MEMORY. The reporter described about 200 MiB per reconnect and a test setup with 4 GiB of total VRAM. Those are measurements from that report, not typical OBS usage, a general requirement, or proof that other systems have the same bug. The issue text does not establish that every user can reproduce it or that an official fix has shipped.

A separate OBS issue opened on 2023-12-07 described a leak with OBS 30.0.0-rc1 on Fedora 37 under a particular Stream Delay/RTMP disconnect reproduction. It illustrates why a leak report should be matched to its specific version and setup, rather than treated as evidence that a current stable release has the same defect.

What to do once you have the logs
- If OBS crashed or logged a RAM allocation failure: use the session and crash logs plus per-process RAM telemetry to find whether memory growth tracks a source, plugin, or other workload. Compare with a clean profile under controlled conditions before changing the live setup.
- If the error names CUDA or NVENC: save the exact error and GPU-memory readings around each output restart. Compare your setup with the issue report only if its symptoms align; do not treat that report as a universal diagnosis or confirmed fix.
- If OBS remained open and dropped frames climbed: follow the connection checks, including stable upload relative to bitrate, wired networking, and possible VPN/security or driver interference.
- If CPU or render/encoding lag is the clearest signal: use OBS Stats, YouTube’s encoder feedback, and a local archive to narrow the workload. Change one setting at a time so the next log remains interpretable.
- If evidence conflicts or the failure cannot be reproduced: retain the timestamped logs, dashboard symptoms, and telemetry. Without those details, no single cause can be identified reliably.
