For a CPU-only VPS, start with OBS using x264 on the veryfast preset, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and 1080p30 at 5 Mbps. If encoding or delivery cannot keep up, try 720p30 at 3 Mbps before moving to a slower, more CPU-intensive preset. These are starting points, not guarantees: test the actual scene and watch OBS statistics and YouTube stream health before relying on a 24/7 broadcast.
Recommended starting settings
| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder | x264 | Software H.264 encoding is a practical starting point when the VPS has no accessible hardware encoder. |
| CPU preset | veryfast | Favors encoding speed and lower CPU load over compression efficiency, which suits a constrained or shared CPU. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live ingest. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends a keyframe every two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 1920×1080 at 30 fps | A sensible baseline for static or modest-motion material. |
| Video bitrate | 5 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate for 1080p30. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest. |
These values concern the stream sent to YouTube, not every playback format viewers may receive. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams, so the ingest settings do not determine the only available viewer resolution. Match the bitrate to the H.264 row for the resolution and frame rate you actually send. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | Lower-load fallback when VPS CPU or delivery is constrained. |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | More motion detail at a modest output resolution, if the VPS sustains the encoding and network load. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | Baseline for static or modest-motion material. |
| 1080p60 | 10 Mbps | Use when additional motion detail matters and the VPS can sustain the load. |
The figures above are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not a guarantee of image quality for every source. YouTube’s current guidance page also lists 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60 as H.264 recommendations. Because the page contains multiple bitrate rows, check its current table and the codec, resolution, and frame rate selected for your YouTube Live setup before publishing rather than treating one figure as universal. The platform target is YouTube’s current table; OBS’s x264 guide serves a different purpose, explaining encoder tradeoffs and providing examples. YouTube encoder guidance
When to lower the output
If OBS reports encoding lag, or YouTube reports delivery problems, reduce resolution or frame rate before choosing a slower x264 preset. For example, move from 1080p30 at 5 Mbps to 720p30 at 3 Mbps. Lower output reduces both the encoder workload and required stream bitrate. A 60 fps target can be more demanding than 30 fps; use it only when the added motion detail justifies the extra load.

OBS examples are not the same as YouTube’s ingest targets
OBS Project’s Streaming with x264 guide, published in 2017, gives x264 veryfast examples of 3,000–5,000 kbps for 720p30 and 5,000–8,000 kbps for 1080p30, for low-to-medium motion. Those examples and YouTube’s current ingest table address different contexts. Use YouTube’s current table to set the platform target, and the OBS guide to understand how encoding preset and CPU availability affect the tradeoff. OBS summarizes the point: “There is no such thing as ‘best settings.’” OBS Project’s x264 guide
Set up OBS on the VPS
- Choose the output target. In OBS, open Settings → Video and set the output resolution and frame rate you intend to stream. Start with 1920×1080 at 30 fps; use 1280×720 at 30 fps if you need the lower-load fallback.
- Configure the video encoder. Open Settings → Output, set Output Mode to Advanced if needed, and choose the x264 encoder for streaming. Set the rate control to CBR, the bitrate to the matching YouTube H.264 target (5,000 Kbps for 1080p30 or 3,000 Kbps for 720p30), the keyframe interval to 2 s, and the CPU Usage Preset to veryfast. OBS labels or placement can vary by version and encoder.
- Use YouTube’s live ingest settings. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its stream key into OBS under Settings → Stream. Keep the key private. Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest option when configuring the server and stream.
- Test the real workload. Run the actual scene, including similar movement and audio, at the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Check OBS for encoding lag, dropped frames, and CPU pressure, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. Do not assume a short static test proves a 24/7 setup will remain stable.
Make the settings fit a VPS
CPU preset and encoder load
The x264 preset controls how much CPU work goes into compression. Faster presets generally use less CPU but are less compression-efficient; slower presets use more CPU for a potential quality improvement. On a limited or shared VPS CPU, reliable encoding is more valuable than a slower preset that causes lag. OBS recommends hardware encoding in general when a supported encoder is available, because it moves encoding work off the CPU. VPS GPU access is specific to the provider and instance, so verify that OBS can actually use the hardware encoder. OBS also cautions that older hardware encoders may produce lower quality than x264 at the same bitrate. OBS hardware encoding guidance

Network capacity and headroom
The VPS connection must sustain the configured stream bitrate continuously. Allow for overhead and other traffic rather than assuming that a connection rated exactly at the video bitrate is sufficient. The cited guidance does not establish a universal bandwidth margin for VPS uplinks, so validate the actual instance and route to YouTube. A provider’s advertised network speed alone does not demonstrate stable delivery for your stream.
Do not size by vCPU count alone
No universal vCPU minimum follows from these settings. Performance depends on the source scene, resolution, frame rate, encoder preset, CPU sharing, hardware encoder availability, and network path. OBS recommends testing before the first live stream; for a VPS, test the actual workload and watch both OBS and YouTube indicators. OBS Studio overview

Troubleshoot a stream that cannot keep up
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| OBS shows encoding lag | CPU load or an overly demanding resolution/frame rate | Reduce resolution or frame rate first; then use a faster preset if available. Confirm the scene is not more demanding than the test workload. |
| YouTube reports stream-health or delivery issues | VPS network path, bitrate, or ingest configuration | Confirm RTMPS and the correct YouTube bitrate row; lower the output target if delivery remains unstable, and test the actual route. |
| Stream works at 720p30 but not 1080p30 | Higher encoding and bandwidth demand at the larger output | Keep 720p30 at 3 Mbps if it is stable, or investigate actual CPU and network capacity before trying 1080p again. |
| Hardware encoder is unavailable | The VPS may not expose a compatible GPU or encoder to OBS | Verify instance capabilities with the provider; use x264 if hardware encoding is not accessible. |
| OBS connects but YouTube does not receive a healthy stream | Wrong stream key, server selection, or mismatched output settings | Recheck the key in YouTube Live Control Room and OBS, use the RTMPS ingest details YouTube provides, and align codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. |
Keep the broadcast appropriate for YouTube
Encoding settings cannot make content eligible for a continuous broadcast. Before starting a 24/7 stream, make sure you have the rights to the video, music, and other material you send, and that your channel and live stream comply with YouTube’s policies. A technically healthy ingest does not establish that the content is authorized or policy-compliant.
