For a playlist of local Indian music files in OBS Studio, use VLC Video Source: it supports multiple files, looping, and shuffle. Use OBS’s built-in Media Source for a single file. Neither option gives you permission to broadcast the music, and YouTube may interrupt a live stream that contains uncleared material.
Which OBS source should you choose?
| Your need | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Play one local audio or video file | Media Source | OBS documents it as a built-in source for an individual media file. |
| Play several local files as a playlist | VLC Video Source | It supports a playlist, with controls to loop or shuffle it. |
| Avoid installing VLC | Media Source, if it supports your file and workflow | VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed. |
These sources are inputs to an OBS scene, not YouTube playlists. OBS’s documentation covers adding media files; it does not establish that a YouTube-hosted playlist URL can be imported as a local VLC playlist. The choice is about file count and playback controls, not a demonstrated difference in reliability or quality. OBS Media Sources documentation

Install VLC and build a local playlist
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC; otherwise VLC Video Source may not appear in OBS.
- Open the scene where you want the music or video to play. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Create a new source, or select an existing one.
- In the source properties, add the local media files you are entitled to stream to the playlist. Arrange them in the order you want.
- Choose whether to enable Loop Playlist or Shuffle Playlist. OBS documents loop on and shuffle off as defaults; treat these as initial settings, not recommendations for every stream.
- Check the source’s visibility behavior, audio track selection, and audio levels. If the files include visuals, preview the scene and adjust framing so the video fits the canvas.
- Start a local preview or recording and listen through the whole signal path. Confirm the intended files play in the right order and the audio is neither silent nor distorted.
OBS also documents visibility behavior options, subtitle controls, audio-track selection, and network caching for VLC Video Source. Its source page lists a 400 ms default for network caching; that is a product default, not a universal performance setting. Consult the OBS documentation if a particular control is relevant to your setup.
Set up YouTube Live from OBS
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming and confirm your channel meets YouTube’s current requirements. YouTube’s general guidance says channels need verification and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; a person must be at least 16 to live stream. Check the current YouTube live-streaming guidance because platform requirements and interface labels can change.
- In YouTube Studio, set up an encoder stream or live event and obtain the stream key using YouTube’s current instructions. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it in a public screenshot.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service, then connect your account or enter the stream key, depending on the connection method presented in your OBS version.
- Check the OBS preview, audio meters, and YouTube’s incoming-stream preview or health indicators before making the stream public. Confirm that the playlist source is visible and that music is audible.
- When everything is ready, start streaming in OBS and verify the live event is receiving the feed in YouTube Studio.
Exact YouTube and OBS interface labels can change. Use YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions rather than relying on an older walkthrough.

Clear rights before streaming Indian music
A working playlist only proves that OBS can play the files; it does not establish a right to transmit them. Confirm permissions for the specific compositions and recordings, the territories reached, and both live and archived use. Keep records of the rights and terms that apply to the exact material. The available platform guidance does not settle which Indian statutes, collecting-society permissions, licenses, or exceptions apply to a particular repertoire or use, so obtain qualified rights advice for your situation.
- Expect automated checks. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for third-party content. If it identifies material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image and warn you; continued use can lead to temporary interruption or termination. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
- Ask about Content ID allowlisting. Even when you have a license, YouTube advises asking the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
- Check the license, not just the label. “Free” or “royalty-free” does not by itself establish that a track is safe for a livestream or archive. Check the actual terms for livestreaming, archived video, territory, monetization, and attribution. YouTube describes public-domain music and music used with permission as copyright-safe options and recommends its Audio Library, original music, and carefully checked third-party licenses. See YouTube’s tips to find safe music.
- Do not treat Creator Music as a livestream license. YouTube’s current usage details say Creator Music tracks are for long-form videos, not livestreams. The same guidance describes availability for U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with expansion outside the U.S. pending; it is not a documented India-based livestream solution. See Creator Music usage details.
YouTube’s livestream terms also state that providers represent they have the rights necessary to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including relevant music rights, and have met applicable requirements in the stream territory. That is a platform contract statement, not a determination of Indian law for a particular song or stream. See YouTube’s livestream terms.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source is missing from OBS | Whether VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS. | Install VLC; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS, then reopen OBS and check the Sources menu. |
| The playlist plays one item and stops | Whether the playlist loop option is enabled. | Enable Loop Playlist in the VLC Video Source properties if you want it to repeat. |
| Files play in an unexpected order | The order shown in the playlist and whether shuffle is enabled. | Reorder the files and disable Shuffle Playlist if you need a fixed sequence. |
| OBS preview has no audio or the level is wrong | Source audio-track selection, OBS meters, and whether the source is muted. | Select the intended track, unmute it, and adjust levels while previewing. Check the full audio path before going live. |
| YouTube interrupts or replaces the stream | Whether YouTube identified third-party content and whether the channel is allowlisted for the licensed material. | Stop and resolve the rights issue with the relevant rights holder; where licensed, ask about Content ID allowlisting. Do not assume a license automatically prevents automated interruption. |
These checks address documented source behavior and YouTube’s stated enforcement process; they are not claims from a live test of a particular setup.
