OBS Playlist Plugin vs VLC Playlist for 4K 60fps YouTube Live

Use VLC Video for an ordered OBS playlist, Media Source for one repeating file, or a compatible plugin for its extra editing controls. None guarantees 4K/60 output.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an ordered playlist, start with OBS’s built-in VLC Video source; for one file that should repeat, use Media Source. The Media Playlist Source plugin is a third option if you need its playlist-editing or restart-persistence behavior and it is compatible with your OBS version. None of these choices guarantees a 4K, 60 fps YouTube stream: playlist playback and outgoing stream quality are separate settings.

Which OBS source fits your playlist?

Need Best fit Why
Repeat one local video Media Source It is designed for a media file and has a Loop option. A playlist source is unnecessary for one file.
Play multiple files in a fixed order VLC Video OBS documents VLC Video as its playlist source. VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS.
Edit a playlist while it is playing or restore the current file after OBS restarts Media Playlist Source plugin, if compatible The plugin listing describes these behaviors; check its current release and compatibility before using it for a live event.

There is no cited controlled comparison showing that VLC Video or the plugin performs better at 4K/60. Choose based on the playlist controls and dependencies you need, then test your complete stream on your own system.

What each option does—and does not do

OBS Media Source

Media Source handles a single media file and includes a Loop setting. OBS’s Media Sources guide lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. The guide was dated January 11, 2022, so check the installed OBS build if a file does not load.

OBS VLC Video

VLC Video is the built-in choice when you want OBS to play a playlist. OBS says VLC must be installed for this source to appear. Match the application architectures: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. In the source’s playlist settings, add files in the intended order, leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence, and enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat. OBS documentation shows shuffle off and playlist looping on as defaults.

Media Playlist Source plugin

The plugin listing identifies Media Playlist Source 0.1.3, with a stated minimum of OBS Studio 30.0.0 and 64-bit support for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its listing describes editing playlist changes and settings without restarting playback, restoring the current file when OBS restarts, and shuffle based on VLC 4’s implementation. Those are listing details, not a guarantee that a build will work with the latest OBS version. Before relying on it, verify the current release, OBS requirement, platform build, and installation notes on the OBS resource listing and its linked project repository.

Set up a 4K 60 fps YouTube output separately

A source controls what OBS plays; the encoder and YouTube connection determine the outgoing stream. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists these recommendations for 4K/2160p at 60 fps:

Encoder codec YouTube recommended bitrate
AV1 or H.265 35 Mbps
H.264 50 Mbps

YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for the stream connection. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular computer or connection can sustain the output. YouTube says it automatically detects encoder settings by default and transcodes live streams for different viewers. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings before broadcasting because requirements can change.

  1. Prepare playback. Add the Media Source, VLC Video, or compatible plugin according to your playlist needs. Confirm the sequence, loop behavior, video, and audio in OBS.
  2. Configure the stream. In OBS’s output and video settings, select an encoder and configure the intended 2160p resolution, 60 fps, codec, bitrate, CBR rate control, and two-second keyframe interval. Available encoder choices and exact controls vary by OBS build and hardware, so use the installed interface and YouTube’s current guidance rather than assuming every system exposes the same options.
  3. Connect to YouTube. Use your YouTube Live Control Room stream setup and the encoder connection details. Keep the stream key private. Verify the selected stream and connection before going live; YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS.
  4. Run an end-to-end test. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Check the actual output resolution and frame rate, audio, motion, and stream health in the Live Control Room. Bitrate targets alone cannot establish smoothness; upload capacity and encoder performance depend on your computer, network, media, and scene.

YouTube’s guidance says the 4K low-latency option is unavailable and 4K streams use normal latency. Factor that into expectations if viewers need near-real-time interaction.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

A playlist that plays correctly is not automatically cleared for a public live broadcast. Use videos and audio you own or are licensed to use, and check the terms of any third-party material before streaming it. YouTube’s Content ID and copyright rules apply to live streams as well as uploads; a match can affect or interrupt a stream. Review the copyright safety checklist before scheduling a long-running playlist. Reused-content monetization policy is a separate question from copyright permission: having permission does not by itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • VLC Video is missing from the OBS source list: Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS. Restart OBS after installation if the source still does not appear.
  • The playlist plays only one file: Confirm that every intended file is in the VLC Video playlist, that the playlist source is the one in the active scene, and that files are accessible at their saved paths.
  • The order changes unexpectedly: Turn off Shuffle Playlist for a fixed sequence, then check the order shown in the source settings.
  • The playlist stops at the end: Enable Loop Playlist if you want the sequence to repeat. For a single repeating file, use Media Source’s Loop option.
  • The plugin fails after an OBS update: Recheck the plugin’s current release requirements and platform build. A listing’s minimum OBS version is not assurance of compatibility with every later build.
  • The stream does not reach 2160p60 or drops frames: Check OBS output resolution and frame rate, encoder settings, dropped-frame and stream-health indicators, and the actual YouTube preview. Test whether the system can encode the chosen codec and sustain the recommended bitrate; changing the playback source alone does not configure the encoder or network.
  • Viewers report no sound or unexpected content: Check the OBS audio meters and monitor the full sequence during a test, including transitions and playlist restart behavior.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a prerecorded playlist that keeps a YouTube channel live without leaving OBS and a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded files, not a camera feed. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. You can estimate file transfer time with the upload-time calculator. Start your free StreamNeo day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need VLC for an OBS playlist?

Yes, if you use OBS’s built-in VLC Video source. You do not need VLC just to loop one file with Media Source.

Will the Media Playlist Source plugin make my YouTube stream 4K 60 fps?

No. It changes playlist handling; output resolution and frame rate must be configured and tested separately in OBS and YouTube’s streaming workflow.
