You can loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from a used desktop with OBS: add the clip as a Media Source, enable Loop, and stream it using YouTube’s recommended encoder settings. Whether a particular used PC can sustain 4K at 60 fps depends on its encoding hardware and the scene, so test that machine with the actual video before relying on it for a long broadcast. You also need stable upload capacity with room above the stream’s bitrate.
Check the channel, PC and connection first
Enable YouTube Live in advance
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day you plan to broadcast. Confirm that the stream appears in Live Control Room and that you can preview it before starting the full run. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Assess the actual used desktop
Do not treat an OBS launch, a Windows compatibility label or a CPU generation as proof of 4K60 streaming capability. OBS warns that compatible system requirements do not guarantee that a system can stream or record at a desired setting; the workload varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. There is no universal minimum used-PC specification established for this task.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check which video encoders and codecs the machine actually offers in OBS, then test sustained performance at the intended output settings with your clip and scene. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard is a useful starting point, not a substitute for a realistic test.

Measure upload where the PC will run
YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth exceed the combined bitrate of the primary and any backup stream by 20%. That headroom matters because other devices sharing the network can reduce the capacity available to the PC, and download speed may be higher than upload speed. Test outbound speed and stability at the actual streaming location and time; an advertised plan speed, especially a download figure, does not establish that the connection can sustain this stream. YouTube’s guidance is at Set up your encoder.
A wired Ethernet connection between the desktop and router is an option if practical. It may help avoid some local wireless instability, but it cannot create upload capacity your ISP connection does not provide. Actual speeds and power reliability vary by location in India; no single local ISP plan or reliability figure applies to every reader.
Use YouTube’s 4K60 encoder settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends the following settings for an H.264 2160p60 stream. Its Help guidance was accessed in 2026; YouTube does not display a publication year for these settings.

| Setting | Recommended or supported value |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 2160p (4K), 60 fps |
| Video codec | H.264 |
| Video bitrate | 35 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 2160p60 |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) recommended |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Transport | RTMP or RTMPS supported; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit |
| Stereo audio | 128 Kbps; AAC or MP3 accepted for RTMP/RTMPS |
| Latency at 4K | Normal latency; YouTube says its low-latency option is unavailable at 4K |
YouTube also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1. Its listed minimum-to-maximum bitrate range for 2160p60 using those codecs is 10–40 Mbps; that range is not the H.264 recommendation of 35 Mbps. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into different output formats for viewers. Review the current encoder settings and bitrate guidance when choosing a codec.
Set up a looping video in OBS
- Prepare the source file. Use the local recording you want to repeat. OBS lists common video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM. Check that the clip’s picture and audio are suitable for continuous playback.
- Add a Media Source. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the local video file.
- Enable looping. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. This repeats the local clip when it reaches its end.
- Choose decoding and output settings. OBS offers Use hardware decoding when available for supported hardware. This setting uses the GPU to decode the file; it is distinct from the encoder used to send the outgoing stream. Configure the output for 2160p at 60 fps and the YouTube encoder settings above, using a supported encoder available on the used PC.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s stream configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it. Use RTMPS where the configuration supports it.
- Preview and start the stream. Check framing, playback and sound in OBS and Live Control Room before going live. Make sure the preview is behaving as expected before beginning a long loop.
OBS’s Media Source supports common video formats and its Loop property; hardware decoding, when available, affects playback decoding rather than the outgoing video encoder. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
Test before leaving the loop unattended
Run a realistic test with the same clip, scene, audio and 4K60 output you plan to use. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and motion, checking stream health and monitoring messages. A still image or a short low-resolution test is not a good substitute for the intended workload.

- Confirm the stream appears in Live Control Room and preview it there.
- Watch OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator during the test.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and listen for audio problems.
- Verify that the loop returns to the beginning of the clip as expected.
- Run the test long enough to expose sustained encoding or network problems rather than judging only the first few minutes.
If OBS’s dropped-frames counter increases and its connection indicator turns yellow or red, OBS says the connection to the streaming server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. YouTube’s testing recommendations are in its encoder setup guidance; OBS explains the indicator in Dropped Frames and General Connection Issues.

Troubleshoot common failures
OBS opens, but the stream cannot hold 4K60
Launching OBS does not demonstrate sustained encoding capacity. Check which encoder OBS is using, then test the intended resolution, frame rate and scene. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point and verify results with the actual clip. If the machine cannot sustain the target, the evidence does not establish a universal CPU or GPU upgrade that will fix every used desktop; compare actual encoder support, sustained performance and the PC’s condition before spending money.
Dropped frames rise or the connection indicator changes color
These symptoms point to an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Measure upload capacity at the streaming location, account for other users and devices, and apply YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation above the combined primary and backup bitrate. A wired connection can address some Wi-Fi instability, but not an insufficient ISP upload rate.

The stream does not appear or cannot be started
Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel, that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and that the selected stream and key in OBS match the one in Live Control Room. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so it is not a last-minute setup step.
The clip will not play or repeat
Confirm that the selected file is in a format OBS supports, that the Media Source points to the correct local file and that Loop is enabled in its properties. If playback decoding is the issue, test the hardware-decoding option where supported; changing that option does not change the outgoing stream encoder.
Keep the stream within YouTube’s rules
Only stream material you have the right to use, including music, images and footage. A prerecorded loop is still a public YouTube broadcast: looping a file does not make copyrighted material yours or ensure that a channel qualifies for monetization. Review YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies for the content and channel before scheduling a long run. You can also use the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight resource.
