OBS or FFmpeg for a Continuous YouTube Gaming VOD Channel

OBS suits live, scene-based gameplay capture; FFmpeg suits scripted loops of prerecorded video. Learn the trade-offs, YouTube encoder settings, and how to protect a continuous channel's VOD.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose OBS Studio if you are capturing gameplay live and want to compose scenes, manage sources, and record a local copy through a graphical interface. Choose FFmpeg if your channel sends prerecorded gameplay files in a scripted, repeatable loop. Neither choice alone guarantees a complete 24/7 YouTube archive: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but does not promise complete automatic archiving beyond that threshold.

Which tool fits your gaming channel?

Decision OBS Studio FFmpeg
Best suited to Live gameplay capture, graphical scene composition, stream controls, and recording controls. Command-line media processing, repeatable scripts, and looping an existing video file.
Game and scene setup Combines scenes and sources such as game capture, windows, audio, overlays, and capture-card inputs. Processes supported media inputs; its loop option does not by itself provide a graphical game-capture workflow.
Prerecorded continuous feed A media source can be placed in a scene, but configuring a dependable 24/7 playlist requires additional setup. -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely; the operator must also handle YouTube ingest, supervision, recovery, and recording.
Local VOD backup Can record automatically while streaming, with separate recording settings and a chosen save path. Can script a recording output, but container choice and recovery need independent validation.
Operational approach More approachable if you prefer a GUI, though configuration and monitoring are still necessary. More command-line and script-management work, with greater control for a technical operator.
Reconnect Has an automatic reconnect setting; it is not a guarantee against every outage. The documented loop and pacing options do not constitute a complete reconnect or process-supervision system.

This complexity comparison follows the documented interfaces and features; it is not a benchmark or hands-on performance test. OBS feature details are in the OBS Studio Overview Guide, and FFmpeg options are in the FFmpeg documentation.

Set up OBS for live gameplay and a local recording

  1. Create or select the YouTube stream

In YouTube Studio, create or select a broadcast and copy its server URL and stream key. Enter them in OBS’s stream settings. YouTube allows prior stream settings, including a stream key, to be reused. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Build the scene from the sources you need

In OBS, add a scene and then add sources for the game, audio, and any overlays. A capture card is relevant when bringing in console or other external video; it is not required to capture PC gameplay directly. Microphones, webcams, and headphones are optional equipment, not prerequisites for streaming.

  3. Choose output quality your system can sustain

Set resolution and frame rate in OBS output/video settings, then configure bitrate and keyframes to fit YouTube’s guidance below. OBS warns that 60-fps streaming can be much more demanding than 30 fps, so test the game and stream together before committing to a setting.

  4. Configure recording separately

Choose a recording path and recording settings in OBS. Enable recording while streaming if you want a local copy alongside the broadcast. Confirm the destination has enough free space and test that the resulting file plays before relying on it as your archive.

Loop prerecorded gameplay with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the better fit when the input is already a video file rather than an interactive game session. Its -stream_loop -1 option loops an input indefinitely, and -re reads input at its native frame rate. The latter can be useful when packet timing matters for live output.

These are building blocks, not a complete YouTube 24/7 recipe. The operator still needs a compatible output and ingest configuration, a way to supervise and restart the process, a plan for network or encoder failures, and a separately tested archive. Confirm that the source codecs and container suit the output. Stream copy with -c copy avoids decoding and re-encoding, but FFmpeg cautions that it may fail when the target container needs information not present in the source.

Match encoder settings to YouTube’s recommendations

YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Use the YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table as the final check because platform recommendations can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Output Codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p at 60 fps H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 4 Mbps 12 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps H.264 8 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 6 Mbps 24 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 4 Mbps 10 Mbps

These figures are YouTube-published recommendations, not guarantees or a measured connection requirement. Test your actual upload bitrate, leave headroom for normal network variation, and use YouTube’s stream-health feedback. Choose a lower resolution or frame rate if your PC or connection cannot sustain the target reliably.

Plan for a VOD that can actually be kept

YouTube Help states that “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its guidance does not promise that a broadcast lasting longer than 12 hours will be archived completely. A 24/7 channel therefore should not rely on one uninterrupted broadcast as its only VOD copy. If completeness matters, record locally, test the recording and available disk space, and verify the resulting file as well as YouTube’s archive.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube does not receive the encoder: Check the server URL and stream key in the encoder, confirm the correct broadcast is selected, and inspect Live Control Room. Reset or replace a key if it may have been exposed.
  • The stream is unstable or drops frames: Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the codec, resolution, and frame rate. Test upload capacity, lower the output target if needed, and check stream health during a test.
  • Gameplay stutters at 60 fps: Reduce frame rate or output resolution and test again. OBS notes the substantially higher system demand of 60 fps compared with 30 fps.
  • FFmpeg plays only once or runs too fast: Confirm the input loop option is applied to the intended input and use native-rate reading when live packet timing requires it. Validate the chosen input and output combination.
  • FFmpeg stream copy fails: The source may not contain information required by the target container. Test a compatible container or an encoding path rather than assuming -c copy works for every file.
  • The local recording is missing or unusable: Check OBS recording path and recording settings, available disk space, and whether automatic recording while streaming is enabled. Make a short test recording and play it back.
  • The stream reconnects but the VOD has a gap: Reconnection does not guarantee a complete archive. Check the local file and YouTube archive, and build monitoring and recovery into the workflow.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that continuously plays uploaded gameplay recordings rather than a live camera or interactive game capture, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start your free first day.
