YouTube schedules the broadcast; the playback method handles the VOD playlist and looping. For a do-it-yourself setup, use streaming software such as OBS on a computer that stays powered, connected, and running. For cloud playback, upload the files, arrange the playlist, and connect the service to YouTube with your stream key.
How the 24/7 VOD setup works
A continuous prerecorded broadcast has two parts: YouTube’s live event and the system that plays and sends your video. YouTube Studio creates and schedules the event. An encoder converts and sends the video feed to YouTube; the encoder or playback service—not a native YouTube playlist control—determines which VOD plays next and whether playback repeats.

YouTube’s scheduled-stream workflow uses a stream URL and stream key to connect the encoder. Once YouTube receives the feed, the scheduled event’s operator waits for the preview and selects Go live. If live streaming is not enabled on the channel, YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.

Choose how to play the VODs
| Method | How it works | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo cloud playout | Upload recordings, arrange a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the playlist from the cloud. | Creators who want a continuous YouTube stream without leaving a computer running. | Service plans, storage, and current terms should be checked before choosing a duration. |
| Local software encoder, such as OBS | Configure the video file or playlist playback in streaming software, then send the feed to YouTube. | Creators who want direct control of local files and are comfortable maintaining a dedicated computer. | The computer, encoder, power, and network connection must remain available. |
| Dedicated hardware encoder | YouTube’s encoder directory lists AJA HELO Plus with PlayToStream for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. | Creators with a specific need for standalone hardware and scheduled media playback. | Specialized equipment; verify current capabilities, purchase price, and availability. |
| YouTube Live Streaming API | Developers can create and manage YouTube broadcast and stream resources. | Teams building a custom scheduling or broadcast-management integration. | The API manages YouTube broadcast objects; a separate media playback and encoder system is still needed. |
StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider for a YouTube VOD loop: it runs continuously from the cloud, supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a first day free.

Prepare game VODs and confirm rights
- Gather and organize the files. Decide the playback order before uploading or configuring the encoder. Use clear filenames or a playlist order that makes it easy to confirm what should play next.
- Check permissions for every element. Confirm that you have the necessary rights or permission to broadcast the gameplay footage, music, and other included material. Technical ability to send a stream does not establish permission.
- Review YouTube rules for your channel and content. Check current live-streaming, copyright, monetization, and reused or repetitive-content requirements against the actual VODs. Neither a successful stream connection nor a repeating playlist guarantees monetization eligibility.
- Plan long-running broadcast and archive handling. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete archive; plan for broadcast rotation and verify resulting archives in Studio.
Schedule the event and connect an encoder
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule stream. Reuse settings from a previous stream or create a new scheduled event.
- Set the event details. Choose its title, description, visibility, and scheduled start time. A scheduled event gives viewers a shareable URL and the option to receive reminders.
- Copy the connection details. In Studio, locate the stream URL and stream key for the event. Treat the key like a password; do not publish or share it.
- Configure your playback method. In OBS or another encoder, set up the selected file or playlist playback and enter YouTube’s stream URL and key. With a cloud service, upload the files, arrange their order, and enter the YouTube destination details in that service.
- Start the encoder feed. Check Studio for the incoming preview and stream status. In YouTube’s documented scheduled workflow, wait for the preview and click Go live to begin the event.
- Verify the loop. Confirm the first VOD starts as expected, the playlist proceeds in the intended order, and the broadcast remains healthy. Check again after a transition between videos.
Run the playlist with OBS on a local computer
YouTube lists OBS as open-source streaming software at no charge. It is an encoder, not a hosted playback service: the machine running OBS must stay on, connected to the internet, and able to play the selected media for the broadcast to continue.
- Install OBS and create a scene for the stream.
- Add the VOD or playback source you intend to use. If using a playlist workflow, configure the playback or playlist behavior in the software or source that will play the files; YouTube’s scheduled-stream help does not prescribe a VOD-playlist configuration for OBS.
- In OBS’s stream settings, choose YouTube as the service and enter the stream key for the scheduled event. If the encoder asks for a server or stream URL, use the value supplied by YouTube Studio.
- Start streaming in OBS, then return to Studio. Wait for the preview and select Go live for the scheduled event.
- Keep OBS, the computer, power, and network available. Monitor playback and the stream status, especially after VOD transitions or any interruption.
OBS is only one local option; YouTube’s encoder directory also describes hardware that can schedule prerecorded media. Whatever the encoder, playback sequencing and recovery depend on the chosen system.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Check that the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key match the scheduled event. If live streaming is new to the channel, first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The scheduled event is not live to viewers: In the documented YouTube workflow, receiving a preview is not the final step; the operator must click Go live in Studio.
- The wrong VOD plays or the playlist stops: Check the order and repeat behavior in the playback or encoder system. YouTube Studio schedules the event but does not control the prerecorded playlist.
- The broadcast stops when the computer is unattended: A local setup depends on the computer, power, network, encoder, and playback source continuing to run. A cloud playout service moves that workload off the home computer.
- The archive is incomplete or split: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. For 24/7 broadcasts, plan rotation and confirm what Studio archived rather than expecting one complete file.
- The stream works but monetization or rights are uncertain: Review current YouTube policies and obtain any necessary rights for the specific footage, music, and other assets. A working encoder does not resolve those questions.
What to keep in mind
- YouTube Studio schedules the event; an encoder or cloud playback workflow supplies and sequences the video.
- A local OBS setup offers hands-on control but requires an always-available computer and connection.
- Continuous streams need an archive plan, and rights or monetization eligibility must be assessed for the actual content and channel.
