OBS or FFmpeg for a 24/7 YouTube Live Product Showcase

OBS suits scene-based showcases; FFmpeg suits scripted media feeds. Compare the workflow, YouTube settings, monitoring, host needs, and archive limits before running a 24/7 stream.

Choose OBS if you need a visual production desk for scenes, overlays, and operator-led changes. Choose FFmpeg if your showcase is a prepared, repeatable media feed and you are comfortable running and supervising a command-line pipeline. Neither choice is established as inherently more reliable for 24/7 operation: continuous streaming also requires monitoring, a recovery plan, and a decision about local recording.

OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your showcase?

Need Better starting point Why
Scenes, product close-ups from a camera or capture device, layered graphics, and hands-on changes OBS Its GUI-oriented production workflow is suited to composing and operating a visual show.
A prepared video feed, repeatable setup, or scripted operation FFmpeg Its command-line workflow can suit automation when the media pipeline is already understood.
Low-maintenance 24/7 operation Neither by itself Both need a host and operational supervision; the sources do not establish a long-run reliability winner.

OBS is a production interface, not a guarantee that a stream will stay connected. FFmpeg is an automation tool, not a guarantee that a script will recover cleanly. Pick according to how you will build and operate the show, then test the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and media source you plan to use.

What YouTube settings should you use?

Use the current recommendations in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance rather than copying an old configuration. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 encoding, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. RTMPS is the recommended secure ingest option where supported; it encrypts the stream through SSL. Recommendations are starting points, not a promise that a particular connection or encoder will sustain them.

Bitrate starting points

For H.264 SDR, YouTube’s current recommended video bitrates include:

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Output YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
720p at 30 or 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations, not universal minimums or guarantees. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain consistently, leaving headroom for normal variation, and test before the broadcast. The table is for H.264; do not assume the same figures automatically apply to other codecs.

Picture and audio format

For SDR, YouTube’s advanced guidance recommends Rec. 709 color, 8-bit depth, square pixels, progressive scan, stereo audio at 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps audio. Confirm that your selected encoder and source actually output compatible values. If you use OBS, its format guide describes H.264 as the default codec and notes that real-time software AV1 encoding can require a high-end CPU; recent hardware encoders can encode AV1. That is a codec and host trade-off, not a universal 24/7 hardware specification.

How do you set up a continuous stream?

Prepare YouTube Live

  1. Enable and schedule live streaming in YouTube Studio. Use YouTube’s current Live Control Room workflow and make sure your channel is eligible and ready before the planned start. Interface labels and account requirements can change, so follow the current on-screen prompts rather than a historical walkthrough.
  2. Open the stream’s encoder settings. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in screenshots, scripts, or support messages. Use RTMPS when the encoder and ingest endpoint support it.
  3. Set the output deliberately. Select the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR mode, keyframe interval, and audio format. Match bitrate to YouTube’s recommendations and your stable upload capacity.

Configure OBS for a scene-based show

  1. Build scenes and sources. Add the product footage, camera or capture sources, graphics, and audio needed for the showcase. Check that transitions and overlays remain legible at the actual output resolution.
  2. Configure streaming in OBS. In the current OBS interface, open Settings → Stream, choose the YouTube service or custom RTMPS server as appropriate, and enter the stream key. In Settings → Output, configure encoder, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval; in Settings → Video, set the output resolution and frame rate. Exact labels can differ by OBS version and encoder.
  3. Start a private or unlisted test first. Confirm the right scene is visible, audio meters move, playback is smooth, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming signal before making the showcase public.
  4. Go live and supervise it. Keep the OBS host awake, connected, and supplied with the media. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and check that the intended scene and sound continue to reach the audience.

OBS’s official YouTube workflow guide dates from 2015, so use it only as broad orientation; historical verification or interface steps may no longer match. Use the current OBS UI and Live Control Room for the actual setup.

Use FFmpeg for a scripted feed

FFmpeg is a reasonable choice when your source, encoding, and output are already defined and you want repeatable command-line operation. For a 24/7 feed, the operator must validate the exact FFmpeg build and options against current FFmpeg documentation and YouTube’s ingest requirements. A wrong codec, keyframe interval, stream URL, key, or input loop can prevent a stable broadcast. Because exact command flags depend on the input media, build, and intended output, there is no safe universal command to paste here.

Whatever tool you choose, keep the source media available, supervise the encoder and its logs, and decide in advance who responds if the process exits or YouTube stops receiving it. The reviewed platform guidance documents health monitoring, not seamless reconnect behavior or a particular automatic restart mechanism.

How do you test and monitor the stream?

YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the real show, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. A static test card may not reveal the same problems as product footage with motion, music, voice, or scene changes.

  • Check the preview for the correct picture, framing, color, and overlays.
  • Listen for clean audio, correct channel balance, and no clipping or unintended silence.
  • Verify that YouTube receives the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate and reports stream health without configuration warnings.
  • Watch the host’s network connection and encoder output; for a scripted setup, inspect logs and process status.
  • Agree on a response for a dropped connection: who checks the cause, restarts the process if appropriate, and confirms the stream is live again.

The YouTube Live Streaming API exposes stream status and health data, including health labels such as good, ok, bad, and noData. It can also report configuration issues. This is useful for systems that need programmatic monitoring, but it does not itself keep an encoder running.

What does 24/7 operation require from the host?

A local OBS or FFmpeg setup depends on a computer that stays powered, online, and able to encode the chosen workload. There is no universal minimum host specification established here: requirements vary with resolution, frame rate, codec, hardware versus software encoding, scene complexity, and whether you also record locally. An existing suitable computer may work; a dedicated mini PC is an option, not a requirement. Decide what you need to encode and record before buying hardware.

For extended operation, plan for power and network interruptions, source-file availability, software updates, and a person or process that can respond to failures. A 24/7 label does not remove those operational responsibilities.

Will YouTube keep a 24/7 archive?

Do not rely on one uninterrupted YouTube replay to preserve a continuous channel. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. If preservation matters, record locally and consider planned shorter broadcasts, while weighing the effect of breaks on viewers and continuity. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Can you stream a product showcase safely?

Use footage, music, images, demonstrations, and other material you own or have permission to broadcast. A live format does not make copyrighted material permissible, and the technical settings above do not establish that a channel or video meets YouTube’s copyright or monetization policies. Check the rights for every asset and review YouTube’s current rules before a commercial showcase.

Or let it run in the cloud
